Make Believe – Make Believe EP
Record Label: Flameshovel
Re-Release Date: October 10th, 2008

Who?

Joan of Arc’s other band. It’s still Tim and Nate Kinsella and they’re still holding down vocals and drums, respectively, but the difference is that this time they’ve come to rock, not to contemplate the nature of rocking.

How is it?

Well, it rocks. Make Believe bring the noise that Joan of Arc are always threatening. For anybody who’s ever treasured a Kinsella record for its experimentation and art but wished that it would do something, this is the band to check out and this is the EP to start with. Now, that’s not to say that this is conventional music in any sense of the word, but it’s a heavier brand of weird (“We’re All Going to Die”) and a more straight-forward moving, dare I say accessible brand of strange (“Tempting As A Shaman”) than most fans are accustomed to. Plus the lyrics make no sense, a la Kinsella’s original project Cap’n Jazz. No thesaurus needed. Minimal patience required.

Originally released in 2004, this self titled vinyl was extremely limited and so it’s being resurged with another 500 records – still no CDs, but that’s why you ought to own a record player by now. Just like everything else from this band, this EP is worth your time and attention.

Probably their best release yet, though Bone Church comes close. Nice to see this reviewed by another staffer.

Great live video of "Temping As A Shaman" here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QwYnC4ZQ-lE).

I prefer OF COURSE much more than any of their other releases but I really enjoy them all.

while joan of arc has been rather disappointing as of late, it's good to know that tim is still making good music somewhere.

I thought Boo Human was solid.

Who does this newb staffer think he is doing reviewing an album that should be reviewed by the great Scott? I demand he get the pink slip.

....thanks for the nice review, just two quick corrections:
* the vinyl-pressing that is reviewed here was not released by flameshovel but by coraille(.com) and expectcandy(.com), both located in germany.
* there actually is a cd of this too, released by flemashovel. the vinyl has a bonus song though and the cover just looks so much better in 12"size .-)
