I just looked at the first page on that website and was immediately turned off seeing Superman Returns higher than Ocean's Eleven.

Still, this would be a great list to go through and add movies to my Netflix.

There's some really good movies in there, but also some really horrible movies on there.

I was going to count how many of these I've seen, but it's too many. So I'll just go with that I've seen most but not all of these movies.

And Indy And The Crystal Skull? Really????

stayillogical
09/24/08, 03:39 PM
When I have time, I'm going to count how many of these I haven't seen and take note. The library is my source of movie rentals so I need old recs like these.

This is somehow even worse than the IMDb 250, and not particularly ambitious either.

Wait, nevermind, Evil Dead 2 is better than Seven Samurai; this list rules.

Not only is it not #1, it's not even in the Top 100. 172? This is just one of the reasons this list is trash.

I might be misunderstanding what you're saying, but it's not. Empire is higher on the list, thus a better movie in their opinion. Also, how is The Dark Knight at #15 not high enough???

AShannon04
09/24/08, 04:47 PM
I think I'm going to make this into an excel spreadsheet, so that I can keep track of what I've seen.

Thanks Jess :-)

09/24/08, 04:48 PM
Anyone know how this was tabulated? Was it just the people at Empire choosing their own or did they consider gross revenue, historical importance, impact on the industry, etc.? Either, I skimmed it and saw that Godfather III was in the 287 or something which makes it void and null. I did enjoy TDK being so high and Goodfellas being in the top 10.

This is somehow even worse than the IMDb 250, and not particularly ambitious either.

Wait, nevermind, Evil Dead 2 is better than Seven Samurai; this list rules.haha

Is anyone in here an Excel wiz? I'm basically trying to figure out if there's a way to calculate the number of cells that are bolded in my worksheet. I bolded all the movies that I've seen, and I'm wondering if there is a formula that can calculate how many of them there are.

They have some really great movies on here but in general it is a poorly ordered list and their are a number of movies on it that just do not belong.

Ben-Hur needs to be higher and 300 needs to get off the list. Top Gun, Speed, Dumb and Dumber, Indy 4, Jerry Maguire, Anchorman?

AShannon04

Wall-E maybe. But everybody knows The Dark Knight will be one of the greatest films of our generation.
I'm sorry, but the Dark Knight was a very good movie, but if it ends up being one of the "greatest films of our generation" I'm going to be very disappointed in our ability to make movies anymore. Don't get me wrong, wonderful performances, Nolan was a champ in all facets of his job, and the story was epic as all hell, but even as a comic fan, I have to say - it was a comic movie. It never really escaped the shackles of the genre and really got down to the heart of the characters like other crime movies have. The mere fact it's above the Godfather part II, the second best crime film of all time behind the Godfather, is absolutely shocking and absolutely invalidates this entire list.

The Dark Knight fanaticism will calm down when Watchmen comes out and everyone has something new to freak out over, but honestly, those who think the Dark Knight is one of the best movies ever really need to watch more movies. At least in my opinion, but I guess that was yours. To each their own I suppose.

Also, I personally thought Wall-E was a far better overall storytelling experience than the Dark Knight, and it was 358 places behind the Dark Knight. Kind of blows my mind really. The whole list is pretty much shit.

Agreed. I thought it was a great summer action movie, but I don't think I was ever able to draw a clear theme or message in the story, separate from one relating to the Batman universe. I'm sure plenty of people disagree with me, and that's fine.

For all the people who say Dark Knight doesn't deserve all the recognition it's getting, I disagree. I think it's very difficult for people to think of a movie that just came out as being one of the best movies off all time. But I can guarantee that 20 years from now people will still consider it one of the best movies made and will definitely be discussing it in their film classes. A lot of the movies on this list were panned when they were first released. 2001 was torn apart by the critics, yet here we are regarding it as one of the best sci-fi films ever made. The Godfather was trashed upon it's release and again, here we are with it ranking at #1 on this list. These movies are so high up not only because they're great movies, but also because of what they did for the industry and their respective genre. The Godfather is seen by many as the quintessential gangster film. Just as 2001 is seen by many (and myself) as the greatest sci-fi movie ever made. So Dark Knight gets a top spot for not only being the greatest film from the comic/superhero genre, but for also transcending genres and not being bugged down with all the typical stereotypes of the usual superhero movie. Also, the ability to of getting a movie about a guy who dresses up like a bat become such a cultural phenomenon is a big feat to accomplish. Plus we all know Ledger's Joker will go down as one of the greatest villains ever portrayed on screen. It's obvious this movie resonated with a lot of people, myself included, so I would personally believe it deserves it's place in the top 20.

Going bold by bold.

1. The Godfather was one of the most critically acclaimed movies ever released and a box office smash off release, and it won Best Picture that year. That little guy is a historical FYI.

2. I agree entirely, and that is one of the best things it did. It was more akin to Heat than it was to Iron Man.

3. This however is incorrect, as superhero movies where people dress up in ridiculous costumes are pretty much the de facto tentpole release for studios at this point. If you don't have comic movies, you don't have anything.

4. I agree entirely on this point. If anything makes the Dark Knight worthy of its praise, it's Ledger's performance. At this point, I'd almost say it's the one part of the movie that is underhyped, and I think if he doesn't win the Oscar going away (ignoring the possibility of a late run by an Anton Chigurh level performance), then he is absolutely robbed.

5. I can't disagree with that point. People absolutely love it.

I just personally find it amazing that so many people connect with that when Wall-E presents such universal themes (love, identity, exceeding your place in the world) and issues (consumerism, reliance on modern technology, the environment) in massively entertaining and touching ways while providing all of the brilliant shots, cinematography (it may be CGI, but they still have to plan the shots), music, and atmosphere that makes a good movie a truly great movie.

I don't know if I've mentioned it yet, but I kinda liked Wall-E. :-d

don't know if I've mentioned it yet, but I kinda liked Wall-E. :-dI just watched a documentary a few weeks ago and it said that while they were making the Godfather no one thought it was going to be a success and that the gangster film genre wasn't popular anymore and upon it's first few weeks of release it got very bad reviews especially since it glorified the mafia lifestyle. So that's what I was going by, but I'm sure once it started doing very well in theaters the critics started really looking at this movie seriously and realized by the end of the year what a masterpiece it was.

The popularity of a film has absolutely nothing to do with whether it is good technically, artistically, or on the basis of any other remotely objective concept. 2001: A Space Odyssey isn't discussed in film classes because now all of a sudden people love it (tons of people hate it to this day) but because of what it did in terms of special effects, the use of music, narrative structure, thematic elements, etc. The Dark Knight doesn't do these things better than the majority of movies on this list, and the fact that it is wildly popular or will remain so in the future does not legitimize it being one of the greatest films of this generation.

On the bolded note, should Rocky Horror be included on the list because of this? Every year people get dressed up in transsexual/androgynous costumes and go see the film in a theatre. Of what relevance is that to it being a good film?

Ben-Hur needs to be higher and 300 needs to get off the list. Top Gun, Speed, Dumb and Dumber, Indy 4, Jerry Maguire, Anchorman?

Dumb and Dumber and Anchorman, IMHO, are 2 of the greatest comedies ever made. As for the Star Wars Movies, didn't see them on there but I'm sure they are. I agree. I was more just commenting on the fact that you consider it a "fun" movie, which I personally disagree with. I think it's a really deep and important film under the guise of a children's movie.

That said, I thought they were both great films, although Wall-E hit me harder than TDK.
Heath Ledger gave me one of the best performances i've ever seen, i went to the midnight showing, and i went to bed that night with the image of the joker, an image i had for days

i'm sorry, but i wouldn't dare rank Wall-E in front of Dark Knight.
It was good storytelling, good animation, and Pixar's best, but putting a "fun" film in front of a movie i came out of still being freaked out and that was intense all the way through is ludacris
Wall-E is far more than just a "fun" movie on a variety of levels.

Heat and Pans need to be higher. Maybe even the Prestige too.

I also only skimmed quick and didn't catch films like The Professional, Ronin, Total Recall, Equilibrium?

That stuff is a must.

Is anyone in here an Excel wiz? I'm basically trying to figure out if there's a way to calculate the number of cells that are bolded in my worksheet. I bolded all the movies that I've seen, and I'm wondering if there is a formula that can calculate how many of them there are.

i know it's a little after the fact but if you take a separate column to the right of the list put an x in each of the cells in the same row as the movie. In a separate column type =countif(A:A, "x") instead of A:A use whatever column you put the x in.

Also, Amelie should have been higher on the list. Good call on Godfather though.

Thanks dude, I tried that with the movies I owned, but I only had to do that for a few of them. It's going to take me a long time to do it for the ones I've seen, but oh well.

but greatest is a matter of opinion, and since it just came out a lot of people would rank it high.

once the hype dies down a little bit, tdk will still be in the top 50

No, favorite is purely a matter of opinion, while greatest is not. The term greatest, while certainly somewhat subjective due to the fact that we are talking about artistic expression and not a quantitative object, has the connotation of requiring some (however modest) objective criteria which contribute to arriving at a decision regarding the legitimacy/success (in terms of the creator's intentions, not popularity) of a work of art. While film is less objective than music, it is probably more objective than painting. Filmmaking is highly technical in terms of writing and production, and there are many places where technical and artistic errors remove from the effectiveness of the finished product to express the director's intentions.

So their one nod to Chinese cinema is Crouching Tiger at 497, even behind The Phantom Fucking Menace. :wallbash: There needs to be more Chow Yun Fat on the list.
For the most part I think they have the movies at the top of the list about right if not nessecarily the order but then it's a matter for personal taste. The longer these greatest lists are the more chance of having to pack them out with unworthy crap, I mean Ocean's Eleven, Men In Black and V For Vendetta, none of them are bad movies but greatest films ever made I don't think so.

the dark knight,ben-hur,princess bride, school of rock, star wars (that could start a big debate but i dont like star wars =| or indiana jones =|)

THEY SHOULD PLUMMET ALL THE WAY DOWN.
what about movies empire has given the thumbs up to? jarhead? rocky horror picture show? 40 year old virgin? streetcar named desire? is eternal sunshine of the spotless mind even there? i couldnt find itt.
my own private idaho should be here.
there are so many movies theyve missed.
most of my top 10 are up there though.
i havent seen monster, american splendor or chasing amy (i cant find them at the video store rofl someone lend me them) but yeah.its weird cos empire gave them all good reviews yet they;re not on here. i know i cant really have an opinon on those but i just wanted to point that out :S :D
