The Morning Light – The Morning Light
Record Label: Fearless Records
Release Date: September 23rd, 2008

There's always times when I listen to a band and immediately think something along the lines of, "they're going places" or "they'll be huge." More often than not, I'm usually wrong. Whether there was little to no promotion for the release or labels were just too busy trying to find the new Metro Station, there has been a lot of missed opportunities for the right bands to make it big because they never had the chance. The Morning Light were picked up by Fearless Records shortly after the release of their EP, The Sounds of Love, a collection of songs I enjoyed immensely and thought would get them a mass amount of recognition. With its summery pop-feel, its accessibility stuck out like a pimple on prom night. Unfortunately it never caught on like the way I wish it would've, so I had high hopes that the full-length would do what the EP didn't.

The band's debut, self-titled, album takes quite a different approach however. Instead of having the fun, upbeat songs that were on the EP, the album contains fun, upbeat - but more mellow songs. The release date for it was almost too perfect actually; it's a very "autumn" type album. Despite the vast difference in sound compared to the EP, it still holds a lot of the same attributes TSOL had, such as its catchiness and and vocal delivery, yet this time - better. Bobby Garver and Harrison Wargo lead the vocals on the album and while both of them are exceptional, Wargo's parts seemed to stand out a little more than Garver's.

On the album's opener, "Wake Up!," the listener gets a dose of just how different the full-length is musically opposed to the EP. Horns and other different instrumentation take place throughout the album à la Panic at the Disco's Pretty. Odd. and it goes together surprising nicely. "Done Writing Love Songs" and "Brand, New Friends" would be the standouts, as the two seem to be the ones that I've gone back to most when I wasn't listening to the album all the way through. A re-done version of "Clouds" is featured on the record, and while I (and probably most people) appreciate the fact they didn't just re-do the entire EP, the new version is far more superior. I would have liked to see what they could have done to the rest of the songs. Despite its high points, the lyrics do have their cheesy moments and the album does get a bit slow at times ("Virginia" and "This Way"). They do the slower songs well, but when I was expecting another song with a huge chorus, those songs came instead. The Morning Light ends with "Movin' Along," another one of my favorites, and the song that sounds the most like it could be an extra cut from the EP.

Overall, I can't say that every previous fan of the band will love this album. For me, it took a little getting used to since it's not exactly the type of follow-up someone would expect after listening to The Sounds of Love. Regardless, it's much more of an improvement in most aspects and once it finally clicks, it'll be hard to leave it alone.

Good review. However, the Steel Train comparison is still yet to be discovered by me.

I felt like "Brand, New, Friends" sounded most like the EP actually. I also think that the original version of "Clouds" was better (same issue as FTSK redos), but I am very glad they didn't simply put the old version on the CD (I'm looking looking at you, TFT). I really enjoy this album and I recommend everyone check out "Heaven & Hell" which is a bonus track that comes with the iTunes release.

It took me maybe two listens through the whole CD to really get into it. I've been following TML for a while just because I knew two of the members in the band. It's amazing how far they've come in only a year and a half or so. The EP was strong I thought, but almost too sugary-pop for me. I felt like a lot of those songs sounded too similar. The full-length is both surprising and pretty solid...

The current favorites off this album thus far are:::

Wake Up!
Done Writing Love Songs
Brand, New Friends
Honest (Apologies Endless)
Movin' Along

Nice review! I'd agree. I loved the ep but this is different, yet it could catch on after a few listens. I'm on my second listen and I'm not hating it by any means. That's a start! :)

of the 4,000 in my itunes, i always come back to these guys.
i feel like they can do whatever they feel at the time and it will never sound generic or stale.
I really praise them for that.

but on first listen of the new album I felt a slight disappointment they had changed beyond my liking. It's something I do with a lot of new albums. My sad face changed drastically after the 2nd and 3rd listen through and now I am liking it more than the EP.
The song Brand, New, Friends especially gets me with the chorus so uplifting. When songs can change your mood it reminds me how much I like the band. Overall though, the album does have a more "chill" feeling. (who would think TML liked to chill, hahaa) Wake Up! has a lot of emotion behind it, honest (apologies endless) is quite catchy, and i'm really liking happy-now and follow me home. Virginia has a it's own thing going and Movin' along combines a few songs just the way the sounds did on the EP. I'm really feelin' this(blink reference) album. Top 3 of the year, next to Jack's Mannequin!

ps - bought it at best buy - only copy in the entire store

I think you're right about this being a perfect Autumn album. Where as the EP was so sunny and summery, this album just feels like the sun is starting to fade and the cold is creeping in... in a good way.

I don't LOVE every song, but overall I really enjoy the record as well and can't wait to see them live again.

I thought the new version of clouds sounds stripped of its feeling and the vocals sound like they lost their tone. Maybe I just have to get used to it.

I couldn't agree with this more.
I was very skeptical about the album when I first heard it.
It was sooo different from the ep, I actually put it aside and
stopped listening to it. But after listening to it on repeat for
awhile it really grew on me. It's different, but in a good way.

My favorite right now would have to be "follow me home"
I'm proud of what these boys have accomplished.
It's a great CD.

love the review.
especially how this is an autumn album.

i was a bit iffy about it at first,
mostly because i loved the ep so much.
but it didn't take long to grow on me.
i really, really enjoy happy-now.

1) You're a tool
2) This album is pitiful when held up against the EP
3) You said top 3 but forgot to include another one. You only listen Jacks Mannequin and TML.
4) They went the wrong direction

Numbering your points does not make you cool, and neither does insulting someones opinion. Grow up.

The EP was fairly solid for a bands first release. They've already showed alot of maturity in their approach to writing/recording the full length which is impressive for a band who's been together for such a short period of time. (I realize they've all been playing in bands for quite a while though) The EP at times seemed so... bubble gum pop. It was catchy, without a doubt, and had it's strong points. But it just seemed to lack alot... of something.

Once they put up Honest on their myspace I knew I was going to love this album though. This album was just as catchy as the EP yet seemed to have so much more substance, not only in lyrics but also in instrumentation. Maybe i'm off on this, and I haven't really listened to "On A Wire" in quite a while but songs like Virginia and Honest remind me alot of The Get Up Kids "On A Wire" album for some reason. Those two songs are the real stand out tracks for me though. Then, as if there were any doubts, everytime "This Way" comes on I just sit back and think God Damn Garver can sing.

Overall though, I couldn't be more happy in the direction they took with this album.

i found these guys rather annoying live. singer has pretty bad stage presence. but i like this cd.
another thing that irks me is that they don't close with their best song which (IMO) is Honest.
oh well, they have potential.

i loved Sounds of Love ep.
the cd is way different. but i really like the direction they went with the cd.
i hope more people take notice of them, because they make really great music
and deserve more recognition.
