Agreed on Charlie.
I [usually] see no point in a remake.
I mean Transformers being remade from an animated show worked, but if a movie is successful, why re-make it?

Was that a remake of an Asian film?

I generally feel like if a good remake can bring more attention to the franchise, and thus the original, it can't be all bad. That said, there are definitely those that reflect poorly on the original as well, which sucks.

It's enjoyable. I have no problem with it, and when it's on tv I leave it on. But then again, I haven't seen the original and I think Spielberg can do no wrong.

But other than that, I don't know many remakes better than the original.

I like the re-imagining concept better than the remake. i.e. making The Magnificent Seven from Seven Samurai as opposed to just remaking Seven Samurai.

09/25/08, 09:11 AM
Well, My Fair Lady is at least an adaptation from something else. I read Pygmalion in high school, pretty good. If they ever remade Breakfast At Tiffany's, that would be outrageous.
Jessooker

That's true but My Fair Lady is as perfect as it can get, it will not benefit from a remake.

Halloween and The Omen
The Departed was overrated, no way oscar worthy. And Whalberg getting nominated for playing "bad cop" from a good cop/bad cop cliche is laughable.

Psycho was pointless but I liked Vince Vaugn in it

haven't you ever heard the phrase "good cop, bad cop"? it has nothing to do with their morals but how they approach their work.

I thought it was a universally known concept , and The Departed really beat it over the head with those two characters (Sheen and Wahlberg).

It was already mentioned, but I got a kick out of the Dawn of the Dead remake. It is, in no way, perfect, but the film (especially the unrated director's cut on DVD) is just great. Speaking of Romeo remakes, I moderately enjoyed Savini's take on Night of the Living Dead. Steve Minor completely fucked up Day of the Dead, though.
Most of the Asian horror flick remakes (The Ring, Grudge, The Eye, One Missed Call, Dark Water) are films I consider shit. Never cared for any of them.
Prom Night was a horrible 80s slasher flick that was turned into an even more horrible new aged teen thriller/drama. What's that line the bitch says? "It's champagne, with a hint of sexy." Or something. She says it at some point in the movie and I just cringe. Horrible, fucking horrible, film that goes above and beyond the term 'unoriginal'; outside of the black guy not dying.
[REC] is being remade as Quarantine, which just looks like shit.
I thought that Rob Zombie's Halloween was okay, even though Zombie can't write a decent script worth shit.
Speaking of the kings of slashers: the Friday the 13th remake actually looks like it could be great, thanks to the fact that it's not hard to fuck up the formula for those movies. Just thinking about seeing a new Jason flick gets me giddy.
...but it's being directed by the guy who did the mediocre Texas Chainsaw Massacre remake.

The House on Sorority Row, with Audrina from the Hills, and Rumor Willis in it...which kind of scares me...and I bet it ends up PG-13 ...juist like they did with Prom Night

It wasn't that it was weak, it was just laughably bad.
Martyrs seems like it could be good, especially thanks to the new wave of French horror that has been coming out like Inside and Them. The shit part is that the wait for it to hit the US is going to be painstaking. I'll probably end up blind-buying it. Then again, it could turn out to be another Frontier(s).
Also, all the trailers for Quarantine I'm seeing are pissing me off. I'm deciding weither I should spend $10 and see if they fucked it up or not.
Cheshire_Buddha
09/25/08, 04:40 PM
P.S. on Martyrs: it seems the Weinstein company helped bring the film to TIFF, so it's possible they'll bring it to US/Canadian release on DVD. Meaning it might not be that long of a wait.

Blind-buying is where you buy a DVD you've never seen before. On a more extreme case, one you've never heard of before.
Them is great. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Them_(2006_film)) It's akin to The Strangers, which caused fans of Them to go into an uproar when they saw the trailers. It's nothing like it outside of the basic plot of home invasion, but the ending is just fantastic and twisted.
Quarantine just pisses me off due to the fact Sony has ruined the ending in some of the early trailers. Plus, it delays [REC]'s Region 1 DVD.

The Battle Royale remake has been trying to get off the ground for years. The good news is that I heard they are still aiming for 14-15 year olds. The bad news is that I wanted to shoot somebody for thinking about remaking it.
