View Full Version : Top 10 Indie Songs Ever? Your List?

09/26/08, 01:02 AM
It's 5:28 AM and I'm incredibly bored, not tired, and I have class at 2 tomorrow, so I have lots of time to spare. With that said, I just read a "Top 50 Indie Songs of All Time" list, and it made me think. I'm a huge fan on the indie genre, and I'm assuming that a good bit of you are as well. I could make this thread a top 10 any genre list, but that will defeat the purpose of me finding new indie songs that I probably haven't heard before. The list should be composed of your favorite songs, songs with a personal meaning to you, but mainly the songs that you truly think are the best of the genre.
I'm assuming that most of you (hopefully) know what indie is. Just for the record, it excludes such terrible bands as:
- Panic at the Disco
- My Chemical Romance
- Fall Out Boy
- Plus 44
- Nickelback
And so on, I'm sure you get the point. Hopefully you people have the decency not to listen to that worthless shit anyway. With that said, hurr'z my list:
10) Death Cab For Cutie - Styrofoam Plates
9) Neutral Milk Hotel - In An Airplane Over the Sea
8) Modest Mouse - Float On
7) Placebo - Pure Morning
6) Oasis - Champagne Supernova
5) Radiohead - No Surprises
4) The Smiths - There is a Light That Never Goes Out
3) Smashing Pumpkins - 1979
2) Oasis - Don't Look Back in Anger
1) Radiohead - Karma Police
It's been argued that Smashing Pumpkins aren't indie? Opinions? Either way, what's your list? GOGOGO.
Also, sorry if this thread has been made before/similar threads. I haven't been on these forums in months.

It was good album for a week or two and then I got the feeling that I never wanted to hear it again. That's not to say that I don't still listen to it though.
It was just much to depressing, I'd imagine that it must of been a relief for Mark to get it all down on paper/record and out of his head.

Placebo counts?
Then pretty much anything of theirs would fit on my top ten.

Didn't every song on your list come out on a major aside from numbers 9 & 10?
I don't that neccessarily prevents it being indie music but many do and a band like Oasis certainly aren't indie they are straight up rock.

Indie rock is genre of alternative rock (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alternative_rock) that primarily exists in the independent (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Independent_music) underground music (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Underground_music) scene. It primarily refers to rock musicians that are or were unsigned, or have signed to independent record labels (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Independent_record_labels), rather than major record labels (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Major_record_labels).

honestly if indie isnt a genre then its useless becuase the business state has nothing to do with the band's sound or intentions or associated scene. the only basis you would have to say "i like indie music" is if you want to vibrantly assess your stance of anti-capitalism and anti-corporation, and thats a really shallow reason to pick one band over another since it doesnt take into account the case by case basis of whether music is good or not.
im not the person to ask for what a better meaning of indie would be though, i just dont like the concept of defining a band by their business state, it does not give a solid enough basis with which to group bands together.

Or, and this is a crazy leap of logic, they find the majority of the bands they gravitate to happen to fall on independent labels or self-release their music and, therefor, they claim to like "Indie music."
I like Indie music.
The fact you make a rash generalization that I say this because I "want to vibrantly assess my stance of anti-capitalism and anti-corporation" is absurd. I say this because I'm genuinely a fan of many bands who happen to be signed to the indies.
There are tons of kids who parade "indie" around as a genre, when it's the corporate constructed idea of an "indie aesthetic." That's not indie, and there's no such thing as an "Indie" genre. It's impossible.
If "Indie" is a genre, then the bands classified as such are far too diverse in sound and the idea of a "genre" falls apart. It's as simple as that.
Pavement sounds nothing like Spoon, yet both are classified as "indie."

Over here it's considered a genre, I don't agree with that, but it's even become a scene sort of thing,
Razorlight, Kooks, Keane, and the style is "indie kids", all cardigans and tight jeans,
I don't get it personally, it needs a new name.

Because kids are wearing whatever fashion is hyped at American Apparel and listening to bands NME are masturbating over doesn't mean "indie" is a genre.
Moreover, being from England doesn't make a band "indie" either. All of those bands are signed to the majors.

I wasn't saying I was agreeing with any of it, that's just the stereotypical view over here, and what a lot of people think,
I don't care much for any of the bands I mentioned, and I realise what the definition of indie is and that it isn't a genre, I'm just stating what is widely believed over here, which is wrong.

but you dont like the music because its indie, if you did thats what would be shallow. the bands you like just happen to be independent. but since thats the only thing that indie defines, that makes it quite pointless for you to attatch that term to the music becuase that has nothing to do with what the music is like, and you like non-indie music too so its not like that even specifically designates your taste. if someone is too adamant about declaring that the music you like is unsigned i mean thats shallow to me, liking music for any reason other than music is shallow and since indie is not a genre which describes music, claiming to specifically enjoy indie under the business definintion makes it look that way.

Thanks. I was going to ask someone to post a definition of Indie, because even though I've read it a hundred times already I just can't seem to wrap my head around what the heck someone is actually referring to when they label random bands as "Indie".
With that out of the way, let me just say that I love indie! It's quite possibly the best music ever! Now, feel free to give me some unofficial forum creds.

Pavement - Indie Rock
Spoon - Indie Pop
I don't know. Indie Rock used to mean something, I think. Now, it doesn't. Like a lot of genres, like punk.
I know my definition of punk is varies from a lot of people. For instance, I think Fugazi is more punk than anything put out by Punkcore records or Anti-Flag Records (except the Modey Lemon!).

Defining music by its business state can and often does lead to interesting discussion about music integrity and the business ethics of the small label. However, this is essentially the point - people shouldn't identify the music they listen to as "indie." It is a shallow modifier, as, again, it merely comments whether a band is signed to the majors or not.
You're absolutely right in that respect, however, that doesn't negate the fact that "indie" isn't a genre. It has no unified sound. It can't be. It's impossible.

This is too one-dimensional.
Spoon - Indie Pop or "Pop that is Indie." That does it a disservice. Hell, many of the bands that fall within "Indie Pop" are far too broad in sound to be haphazardly lumped into such limiting "subgenres."
"Indie Rock" meant something in the '80s when lazy reviewers and music fans didn't know how to properly articulate what a band's sound was, and threw together virtually every buzz band worth a damn in the same category. Say what you will, but a band like Sonic Youth were vastly different from a band like the Jesus and Mary Chain. Ultimately, it's a limiting, almost insulting label.
Subgenres that these bands were actually a part of "Post Rock, Riot Grrl, Post-Hardcore, Math Rock, Psych Pop Revivalism, etc.) were disregarded for the broad, all-encompassing "indie rock" "subgenre" that, if anything, is a pejorative.

oh see, i disagree. i would never put jesus and the mary chain as indie rock ever...they're way more psych rock/psych pop. i don't know know.
i don't really care about genres anymore. it doesn't mean that much to me anymore.
but my idea of indie rock would be along the lines of big black, scratch acid, pussy galore, harry pussy, sonic youth, husker du, the pixies, beat happening...and really, all those bands are different in their own right.
the argument that this band doesn't sound like this band works and doesn't work. i mean patti smith doesn't sound anything like crass, yet they are both considered punk. and yet beat happening is consider lofi or indie rock or minimalist rock and same goes for sonic youth and they sound nothing a like.
genres are pointless. it's fun to learn about the history of them or the history of music and the different kinds of music, but when it comes down to it, genres are whatever someone wants them to be. differences of opinions and such.

This is an odd thread. I think the definition of Indie has changed, in most people's minds. Anyhow, of bands I would throw into the "indie genre", and who recorded these songs on an indie label, here I go:
10) Dogs Die in Hot Cars - "Godhopping"
9) Bear vs. Shark - "Catamaran"
8) Mogwai - "Tracy (Kid Loco mix)"
7) Architecture in Helsinki - "It'5!"
6) Now It's Overhead - "Let the Sirens Rest"
5) Placebo - "Special Needs"
4) The Album Leaf - "Wherever I Go"
3) Death Cab for Cutie - "Transatlanticism"
2) Owen - "A Bird in Hand"
1) Say Anything - "Admit It!!!"

I disagree tremendously here. Smith and Crass' musical stylings can both be "reverse engineered" back to the initial Protopunk bands and sound. They wear their respective influences on their sleeves.
Bands like Slint and Unwound don't have a shared, easily definable lineage and sound radically different from each other, yet are both commonly associated with this umbrella term "Indie Rock." Such a genre is absurd and limiting.
genres are pointless. it's fun to learn about the history of them or the history of music and the different kinds of music, but when it comes down to it, genres are whatever someone wants them to be. differences of opinions and such.
I'm rather ambivalent on genres. They impose a set of predisposed notions and ideas of what a band associated with various genres and subgenres should sound like. That's restricting and a disservice to their sound. Conversely, music should be defined to an extent, if for no other reason then to have "loose sound archetypes" that make certain sects of music easily findable for potential listeners who want a specific sound. Moreover, when a band/artist/musician creates something innovative, it should be recognized and rewarded with it's own label.
and i am not trying to be an asshole! just so you know! hahaha. i agree and disagree!

i have never heard this before.
i've heard "indie rocker".
haha.
but not "indie".
i hate how people use all these labels to describe people. "punk", "hipster", "indie", "emo", "hardcore kid".
it's like the whole fight to prove that it's not about fashion or looks or an image is complete shit.
Yeah, I hate labels.
People should just be mixtures, what they feel like being, not what their label suggests, but people just don't seem to get that, and no matter what, you'll be labelled.

Attn idiots of this website: Stop posting if Pavement and Sonic Youth are not on your list.
But I don't like a single thing by either of those bands. Sorry.

I thought my list was alright :-( I haven't really had the chance to listen to pavement/sonic youth yet but i thought my list was at the least solid.

Fair enough aha.
Yeah same, admittedly I don't mind the whole clothing style thing they got going, cardigans and v-necks and stuff, it's pretty smart,
But most people that consider/call themselves "indie kids" are complete twats.
oh yeah, i own me a cardigan myself haha
but the people themselves are utter cunts. i know a few who go in my local, walk around like they own the place, actually think theyre rock stars haha

I haven't been on these forums in months.
hahahahah. I saw you make this thread on another forum.
