The Bled 13 is helping me out with recommendations this week, and he has some excellent ones, so make sure you check them out. (Also, I wouldn't be against the idea of having other people recommend with me. If you would want to, pm me, and I'll hook you up, although if everyone pms me it might take a while, so...) Here are mine:
Ulrich Schnauss (http://www.ulrich-schnauss.net) - So this is my third time recommending A Strangely Isolated Place, but someday someone will actually listen to it and it'll be worth it.
Efterklang (http://www.efterklang.net/) - Tripper is a pretty grand record and its mixture of sweeping strings and minimialist electronic passages is pretty awesome. It's hard to describe really, but it's definitely good.
Jim Fox (http://www.jimfoxmusic.com) - The City the Wind Swept Away is one song, 23 minutes, and just plain amazing. Avant-garde minimalism, but the compositions are quite beautiful at times, even when it's just a lone piano.
MDC - I just reviewed Millions of Dead Cops/More Dead Cops and you really should have this album especially if you claim to be into punk music at all.
All right, here's The Bled 13's picks, which are excellent:
Hey guys, well, since I'm so damn cool the one and only Ryan Mills has asked me to join him this week and let you kids know what I have been spinning latley. Be prepared, it is quite a few albums, all over the place. genre wise.. that is my lifestyle I guess. BUT, before I even get to that, one person I would like you all to check out visits our forums often and here name is Helen. She has a beautiful voice, and even though it really isn't my style of music I was still amazed. You can check out her music by clicking her Purevolume link here - http://www.purevolume.com/punklet2101
The Red Chord (http://www.redchord.com) - "Fused Together In Revolving Doors.": I'm a huge fan of chaotic music. This band defines it. Brutal vocals, incredible guitar work, and the percussion is something else. The only time I think I would be okay driving my car into things would be while I'm listening to there song "Nihilist." The only way I can describe the song is that it is almost bi-polar as it builds up and just crashes the fuck down. Gary Kozworyk has amazing ability. If you know this band, then you know what I'm talking about.
The Promise Ring (http://tpr-online.com) - "Nothing Feels Good.": If you haven't taken a chance to listen to this band you have missed out twice. Once, because they are amazing and very original, and second because they aren't together anymore. I think I was the only freshmen at my high school that had heard of these guys way back in the day. Even though the song is not on this particular album, I would have to say that "My Life Is At Home".
Premonitions Of War (http://www.premonitionsofwar.com) - "Left It Kowloon.": This is another "chaos" album that I really enjoy. I understand that a lot of people write this band off as another Victory signing, but they are so much more. So, check them out.
The Blood Brothers (http://www.thebloodbrothers.com) - "Crimes.": Wow, these guys are amazing. Now, I was some what surprised because they did take a different approach writing this album in contrast with "Burn Piano Islan Burn." It's not a bad thing at all, but I can't decide which album I like more. So, I'll say both.
The Black Keys (http://www.theblackkeys.com) - "Rubber Factory.": They have a very different sound then most bands that have come on to Epitaph latley, but I love what these two guys are doing. I guess I would describe it as a blues/folky/indie type sound, really good stuff. They are always being jocked by NPR so you know they have to be good.
Mos Def (http://www.mosdefmusic.com) - "The New Danger.": Is it fair to call him a one of the most intelligent hip hop artists? I'm going to have to say yes. Now, don't get me wrong, party rap is always interesting, but Mos Def has a lot to say and I like to listen. If you guys are looking for stuff that is along his lines, you should check out - Crown City Rockers, Madvillan, Talib Kwelli, MF Doom, and De La Soul.
Yeah, I could go on for hours about why the bands I have all been listening to are important, but I'll just leave you with those, and a few others I think you should listen too - American Aquarium, The Rapture, Iron & Wine, Ratatat, Moving Units, The Walkmen, The Unicorns and Drive Like Jehu.
