My recs are a pretty wide range of genres this week, hopefully a little something for everybody. Enjoy.
Thunderbirds Are Now! (www.skylinememoirs.com/tan) - great Detroit spazz/dance/indie rock. They just put out a new self-released EP and signed to French Kiss Records (http://www.frenchkissrecords.com/index.html). Expect big things from them once the new full length comes out. And if you get a chance (mainly if you're from the Great Lakes area), you must see them, one of the best live bands I've ever seen. Apparently their site is down though, but you can check them out at the Action Driver (www.actiondriver.com) site.
Guns Up! (http://www.gunsuphc.com/) - purevolume (http://www.purevolume.com/gunsup) - they definitely are keeping the NYHC sound alive and fresh and are slowly becoming one of the best hardcore bands on the East Coast. Just put out a solid new EP/7" on 1917 Records (http://www.1917records.com/home.html).
Stephin Merritt (http://www.houseoftomorrow.com/) - I can't deny my love for pop music, and this man is a pop dynamo. Somehow he manages to consistently put out albums with four different bands (The Magnetic Fields, Future Bible Heroes, The Gothic Archies, and The 6ths), not to mention entire movie soundtracks (Eban & Charley and Pieces of April). Nothing can slow him down, and I hope that never changes.
This is Hell (http://www.thisishell.org) - purevolume (http://www.purevolume.com/thisishell) - the Long Island scene has a lot of great hardcore bands, and they could very well be my favorite (or Crime in Stereo). They just signed to State of Mind (http://www.stateofmindrecordings.com/index2.php) after putting out their stellar debut 7". Seriously, how could you not check out a band that's ex-Scarps and Heart Attacks and The Backup Plan?
Architecture in Helsinki (http://www.architectureinhelsinki.com) - think Belle & Sebastian meets Broken Social Scene. Really delicate pop, with a dash of grandeur. Fingers Crossed was one of my favorites of 2004, and they're currently working on their new full length, called In Case We Die that's coming out next month. From the song on the site you can stream, expect it to be great.
