They're rad. Have yet to see them. No one comes to RI.
I like the fact that they have 'You All Everybody' and 'Station 5: The Pearl' and song titles, referencing LOST. I just recently got into that show, and just realized they were references. ha

It took me quite a while to get into the s/t. It is a great example of a band pissed off at the industry. If you can get into it's more punk vibes and less production than Volcano, and just listen to how pissed they are, it becomes brilliant. Definitely took like 5 or 6 listens though.

Well, what else would you use to describe their sound? It definitely has pop-punk characteristics. However, they are so much more talented with their instruments than other artists.

I could see what you mean by calling them Indie. Although Indie as a genre is so vague. I like the Latin influence with the piano on their S/t though. They have a healthy mix.

I hate using the term indie with people over here, but you have to because they don't know what real indie is. 'You All Everybody' is one of my favourite songs by them... such a good start to the album. I've got some songs queued up right now.

If they haven't been getting much love lately, its because they haven't put out an album in over 2 years. Not because people here don't like them.

Here It Goes
09/29/08, 11:40 AM
For some reason, I don't "get" this band all that much.
Here's what I get about them:
Nic Newsham's voice is great. He puts emotion and feeling into his singing.
I find the beats fantastic. Rudy Gajadhar (drums) and Kirk Huffman (bass) are a wicked combo, and they can groove like few other rhythm sections can. In fact, often times, entire GAD songs are set up around a catchy bass line or a dancey beat - not many other bands can struture a great song without primarily using guitar or piano.
Their lyrics are fantastic. Whether they're digging up old high school reading assignments, or dishing on the record industry, they're spot on. And heck, if you like gang vocals, throw on their self-titled album.
Frankly, no one makes music like Gatsby's American Dream. Portugal: The Man comes close to this style, but they're way too spacey and druggy for me. Gatsby's American Dream brings the groove back to prog-punk, and that's why everyone loves them.

I understand that. I dig them. But to me, they're not like incredible or anything. As far as Portugal. The Man goes, they have just the right amount of drugginess for me (whatever that means). I like to get high and listen to Portugal. Their new CD is incredible.

That's what I said. But that's fine with me. They do have this spaced out sound to them and I have no doubt they get high while making their music but describing them as druggy seems a bit...non-sequitur?

Well, i doubt it. But one can only hope. To be completely honest, while i would love to see Gatsbys live and new material would be amazing to hear, Gatsbys had a good run with some great releases, if they did come back i hope really hope that they kept it good. Most comebacks aren't successful. So i'm on the fence about a reunion.

They announced a hiatus because they were sick of labels, well at least i think that was it. And members wanted to try their own thing, hence all the projects.

Yeah the Virgin records bit threw me off too, it would be a bit hypocritical. I figured he might have just been joking about that part and not the rest, OR trying to make their boardies think he was joking when in fact he wasn't.
There is other threads on that site that makes me think SOMETHING is happening though, it could be a new side project or something...

I would have to agree. Volcano was the first released i picked up, and it really stuck with me. Such an amazing album, definitely in my top 5 of all time. I think that Ribbons & Sugar showed more of the freedom that Gatsbys wanted and envisioned with very loose song structures yet catchy and meaty guitar hooks and incredible drumming. The album absolutely defines their sound, no doubt about that, but i would agree that shows who they are musically, the best. Lyrically, not as much as Volcano maybe, although i do love the lyrics and the obvious Animal Farm concept.

What I admire most about Volcano is the connections between the songs. Meet me at the Tavern is the appendix to Giants Drink (same lyrics), Speaker for the Dead borrows the chorus from Fable, Loosing borrows the billows line from Speaker...etc...really neat how they intertwined all the songs. Coheed has had some success doing the same thing, but they don't do it as much within one album.

Well they used keyboard in R&S and Volcano, but the use of an actual piano and the latin vibe is excellent, and we played. It definitely adds to the sound. As a piano is often associated with a "maturing" sound, i would say that it works in this case, but they pull it off beautiful and in a more originial way than other artists.

And then listen to Ribbons and Sugar and realize how much better than Volcano it is.
It's hard for me to weight Ribbons & Sugar against Volcano, but i will say that Ribbons and Sugar is probably the sound that Gatsbys wanted to go with, and Volcano and the self-titled are changed by the label.

Ribbons and Sugar is a half hour of pure sex. The Taming/We're Not Orphans 1-2 punch is amazing.

I'm there with you. The Taming has got to be one of the greatest openers ever.

It always seems like In the Land of Lost Monsters doesn't get enough love. I like how each song on that CD seems to go in a completely different direction, yet everything feels like it's leading up to The Dragon of Pendor. Great EP.
i saw them in 05! i don't really remember cus i was pretty young.. but i think they were pretty good... :-|

It's a great EP, and i agree with everything you say. I also realy like the acoustic version of The Badlands, it's a great tune.

The acoustic Badlands is pretty cool, but the Volcano version is probably one of my favorite Gatsby songs. There is just so much awesome stuff happening in a short time span.

Oh undoubtedly the Volcano version is better, but the acoustic still holds its own as a solid Gatsbys song. That's part of the reason why i enjoy it so much.

More experimental. Fewer choruses. Ultimately better than Volcano. Nice avatar btw, they're my favourite band.

Eh I disagree. I'm not so much fan of the Volcano version because the way "hear you coming" is sang and it annoys me.

Machu essentially nailed it spot on, but it's got that great Gatsby vibe going in it too.

It has that radio effect or whatever it's called on it when it's sang, but i like it. The Volcano version in my opinion has more flavor to it, and each segment of the song is more dramatised.

Yeah I think Ribbons & Sugar definitely takes a few listens to get into, but once it does, it packs a great punch.

Really? Ribbons & Sugar clicked with me, it was the self-titled that took a few listens.
I love that first song on the self titled so much, one of my favorite gastby songs, then the rest of the album plays and I can't help but feel a little dissapointed.

Well it might just be me. I heard Volcano first, which is probably their most accesible. So when I first listened to R&S expecting it to sound like what I had heard, it didn't really click with me.
