definitely
Great voice.
People compare her a lot to Erykah Badu, but I find Holiday's voice more soulful.

I need to get some more of her stuff. I really like jazz, but I don't listen to as much as I should. A while ago, I was trying to build up my jazz collection. I'll have to start that back up again.

Yeah, I have some of her stuff too. I know a lot of jazz artists/bands (I was in jazz band for at least 7 years so I got exposed to a ton of great stuff), I just haven't put in the effort to collect it all yet.

Do you listen to much instrumental jazz? John Coltrane, Dizzy Gillespie, Miles Davis, Sonny Rollins, Charlie Parker, etc. That kind of stuff?

yeah only miles davis <3 but i'm still giving myself time to dig more and more.
I love John Coltrane, I have one of his greatest hits albums on my computer if you want it, just IM me.
Also, you should listen to some Thelonious Monk.
Actually, if you want to hear some really good jazz (and none of that contemporary jazz shit they keep on talking about) listen to NPR, they play some really great stuff, some instrumental, some vocal.

Yeah, I have a bunch of jazz albums too. I have them shared along with all my other stuff over AIM. So if I'm on after 4pm (when I'm not at work), dig around.
I like it when people say they like jazz because they like the Jamie Cullum cd. My roommate does that.

Just listened to the much-reviled Lady in Satin. I don't get the hate at all. That record is magnificent.
I dream that some day I will drop $300 and purchase the complete Billie on Columbia and Verve boxes. That will be heaven.

Oh you lucky bastard. She's one of the absolute greats, man. And as influential as any singer to ever live.
My biggest holy grail purchases when I have the money someday are:

Those look fantastic. I remembered her from youtubing renditions of "Let's Do It (Let's Fall In Love)" and I mediafired Lady Day. I'm only halfway through it, but it is absolutely phenomenal. Her discography is a bit daunting, but I'm having fun slowly digging through it.

The only proper album I know is Lady in Satin. It's scary with her because there are no proper albums and her music exists in such varying sound quality. It's why I want those lovingly remastered boxes so badly.

Yeah, there's hardly any actual albums to look into so I stuck with a compilation (not that it isn't a very good one or could be considered definitive, but you know). I actually like the elimination of starting points or proper albums with prolific artists such as this. Diving headfirst into something I had been neglecting for so long is almost always satisfying and rewarding.
Is Lady In Satin good? Also, there is some sort of Ken Burns Jazz CD thing in regards to her, I think? Would you know anything about that?

Yeah, it's wonderful. It's one of her last records, so her voice was a bit damaged by then, but to me it just increases the character and gravity that was always in her performances.
And the Ken Burns one is, if I'm not mistaken, arguably the definitive single-disc comp because it's the only one to draw from her work with Columbia, Decca, Verve and Commodore. Most comps only get the rights to one label's vaults.

That's what many of her strongest advocates have argued. Sounds interesting if it really is that dynamic of a change in vocal style.
And yeah, that one. I really would like to hear that one. There are many compilations under his name as well which is awesome for a newbie like me, I think.

I mean, she still sings like Billie. But there's some serious wear. Especially in her upper register. Hard living.
And yeah that series was shooting to be the best possible introduction to a bunch of legends. Not sure how the others succeed, but I've heard good things. From what I've seen of the documentary series, it was pretty enlightening, too.

Ah, makes sense. Still sounds like an interesting listen, I'll look into a few tracks tonight.
And yeah, we watched his documentary for Jack Johnson in film class for our own personal biopics. Very rewarding to see the old footage on screen' had me excited on seeking more of it out. Especially loved how he painted Johnson's indulgence and megalomania to be seen as protest for the oppression of blacks at that point in America.

Yeah, I don't always agree with Ken Burns' biases, but he's always a really interesting filmmaker. I really want to finish Jazz some day.

Songs for Distingué Lovers is absolutely beautiful. I love Billie, she's absolutely perfect to listen to at night, while its raining outside. One of the most powerful and soulful voices ever. I saw a documentary on her and 3 other female singers of that era, who had tragic lives recently. It was fantastic.
If this song doesn't make you well up, then fuck you.
