What do you think of Freud and any/all of his theories/ideas?

Right now we're going over the stages (oral, anal, phallic, etc...). I don't necessarily agree with everything Freud has said, but some of his theories really do make sense.

I love how when we were talking about the uh...things forgot the name...but like...ah shit. But our teacher was like "you wonder why you all have to drink bottled water even when you're not thirsty...that's right, weren't breast fed"...stupid bottled water drinkers...

I think Freud was a complete moron. He shit just doesn't add up, and I'm pretty sure the majority (if not all) of his work was dispelled because of it. Some will argue that he brought up new ways of thinking about these subjects, so that he contributed in that sense. But honestly at that point you're just grabbing at air.

well, compared to what people thought before his time...it was pretty revolutionary...just the idea that things in your childhood could mess you up as an adult was never heard of...He was also extremely..."shocking" so to say...his ideas that a young child would want to marry his own mother was extreme taboo cause kids at the time weren't even allowed to see public displays of affection...he also paved the way for erikson and piaget which is pretty good.

Richter is right though. I mean... look at Erikson's work and his 8 stages of Psychosocial Development. If you take a look at what he said, a lot makes sense. The things that happen to us...they way that we're rasied as infants and then during our teenage years... you cannot tell me that events and occurances during those time periods didn't shape our personality and mind in any way.

No one is saying that you had a vendetta against your father because you secretly loved your mother in that "more than mother/son" way and I'm not saying that Freud is some sort of god because a lot of his ideas are outrageous.... but don't completely shut them ALL out.

Yeah he was an oddball but some of his stuff makes sense to me. I think that guys do go towards something like their mother because their mother is nurtering and such. I'm in Psych right now (just got out of class too) and we're gonna talk more about Freud soon. I can't wait.

I mean...if you think about it...if you were raised by "good" parents...you'll probably be attracted to people who have characteristics of your mother/father...my gf...she's an overprotective freak that won't let me have any female friends...thats' the same as my mom...

some of freud's theories were on crack (although amusing) but that doesn't mean his other theories are necessarily false. i believe in some of them. i think many of the others are intriguing and thought-provoking at the very least.

It's pretty entertaining thinking about Freud's theories (although not all true ..as said a bunch of times) and how you can apply them to your own childhood.
