I just bought his You Are The Quarry CD yesterday. It's really good, one lyric was really funny:
In America, The land of the free, they said, And of opportunity, In a just and a truthful way.
But where the president, is never black, female or gay, and until that day,
you've got nothing to say to me, to help me believe
It was released in 2004, obviously well before Obama became president.

Sometimes the search function isnt always working but anyway, great artist. While he's released some shitty albums in the mid-late 90s , he's also written some great records like Viva Hate, Your Arsenal, You are the Quarry and so on.

While I might be clouded my fanboyism, I wouldn't consider any album of his bad, let alone shitty. Some are indeed weak: Kill Uncle, Southpaw, and Ringleader don't impress me much. That said, I would gladly listen to any of those three "weak" albums over the majority of any other artists' albums.
It also always annoys me that Bona Drag is a compilation and not a true album. It would make my answering the "Favorite Album" question so much easier. I still say Bona Drag, but always have to add the "Even though it is a comp... blah blah blah" qualifier to my answer.

Hey, I love Morrissey. You can be a fan and still not dig everything the man has ever written. Ringlieader was absolute shit. Southpaw is pretty shitty too. He still has some fantastic albums. No artist has a perfect discography. Esp one who's been making records as long as he has.

Actually, all around, that album was received pretty middle of the road. Anyway, I dont really care about reviews...I love reading them but they never sway my opinion of an album. Case and point- alot of press shit all over Thursday when they put out "A City By The Light Divided" and I think that album is fantastic.
As for the new Morrissey album, I havent got around to listening to it because I dont DL albums but I will be picking it up Friday along with the new Thursday when I get paid. I'll post my thoughts then. :-)

I haven't listened to either Ringleader or Southpaw in quite a while. Both albums have some great material, but as a whole I don't think either are strong.
Speaking of his weakly received albums, however, I will always defend Maladjusted. That album is much better than it gets credit for.
And as far as Years, my favorite is definitely It's Not Your Birthday Anymore, with the runners up going to Skull, One Day Goodbye..., and I'm OK By Myself.

It was a really good show, especially considering that he canceled all but the Myrtle Beach show before the one in Durham (and I heard the MB show was pretty shitty, too). It was my first time seeing Morrissey, so having him jump straight into This Charming Man made me tear up a little bit. I really like how they're playing that song...on one hand, it sounds more like the Death Cab cover, but I really think it fits how his vocals are nowadays...and my God, the way he says "return the ring" in this version makes me swoon everytime, haha. Aside from This Charming Man, Ask was probably my favorite of the Smiths covers.
Still, just hearing the songs from Years of Refusal made my night. Personally, Years is right up there with Viva Hate and You Are The Quarry in my book (with those being my favorite solo albums).

A group of us went to see a show in Detroit last summer. While the band was setting up, they played a mix on the speakers. One of my friends wanted to grab a smoke, so we walked outside the club just as these two dudes with ICP makeup caked on their faces were passing by. The song on the loud-speaker was some Morrissey track, and given the size of the venue, the music billowed out of the doors and was audible outside.
The two dudes stopped, looked at us and said "that's some pussy shit, dog," and proceeded to walk away. They were right.

Morissey's thoughts on the "state of the music industry"
http://pitchfork.com/news/43002-morrissey-talks-label-troubles-glastonbury/
Obviously, it's much worse because the entire "industry"-- as it must be called-- has been destroyed in a thousand ways. The Internet has obviously wiped music off the human map-- killed the record shop, and killed the patience of labels who consider debut sales of 300,000 to not be good enough. People no longer know the top 75 charts, and what they do know of them they don't trust because chart-placings are so fixed-- everyone on the planet mysteriously flies in at number one now. The music press has died because of Internet People Power-- everyone is now their own expert critic. As a consequence there are no risks taken with music anymore-- no social commentary songs, no individualism. This is because everyone is deemed instantly replaceable.
Thoughts? I can sympathize with a few things he mentions (record shops going out of business and artists getting dropped by impatient labels) but the rest of this stuff seems pretty ridiculous/irrelevant. I guess his age is really showing here..
cshadows2887
06/27/11, 02:26 PM
Just because he phrases it bitterly doesn't mean he's not on to something...
Jet Set Paul
06/27/11, 02:39 PM
I mean, I get that it's really tough to make a living in the music industry these days--and I can see how it would be more upsetting for someone who has been making music for a long time and remembers the days (before file sharing) when you could potentially make some big money for doing what you loved. And Morrissey's not exactly the most sunny/optimistic person I can think of, so I'm not surprised by his attitude. The other stuff doesn't really make sense to me though.
Who cares about the charts? Why is he bitching about music blogs/internet critics? And who says that there's no individualism or social commentary songs anymore? I suppose if he's just referring to really mainstream "top 40" music, I'd agree with that last one, but I feel like pop music has for the most part, been shit for decades. While the piracy aspect is unfortunate, I think the internet/social networking along with advances in home studio technology has allowed for a lot more individualism, creativity, and freedom in music. The only thing that's not guaranteed anymore is money.
