He probably only has 2 innings left in him, I could see the fifth being the last for him unless he gets a quick 1-2-3.

Top of the order due up next for the Cubs. Big inning here for Harden.

It's a thing called plate discipline. That's why Manny's career OBP is 82 points better than Soriano's.

God really does hate the Cubs. Chance plays are how LA is winning this game. What are the chances that ball would hit the bottom of the ad on the fence and not bounce back in the slightest, allowing him to score? A line drive in the first barely crossing over third followed by a blatant tag out called safe, allowing the other two runs. It's just frustrating.
CubbyNick42
10/04/08, 08:52 PM
That's baseball, man. The Cubs sure aren't helping themselves at all.

Fukudome's in? Are we just throwing in the white flag? What is this?!
I would have rather seen Reed Johnson instead of Fukudome.

But the Cubs fans have their expectations high this year, they were thinking World Series or bust. No one had the White Sox even finishing 3rd in the division, so making the playoffs was quite an accomplishment. If they lose tomorrow I'm not gonna be happy, but I'll still be proud what they did this year.

Wait, who did people have finishing third in the Central this year? Either way, those expectations may have been true at the beginning of the season, but expectations change. As great of a season as the Twins may have had after losing Hunter and Santana, they were still a disappointment saying that they had ample opportunities to win the division and choked it away. Same goes for the ChiSox if they get swept tomorrow because no one should be content with just making the playoffs.
And again, Cubs fans should be used to failure. That's what happens when you go a century without winning a World Series and sixty-three years without reaching it.

The only FAs are Demp and Woody, and they're both solid bets to be back. 97 wins will be tough to match, but there's no reason they can't take the Central again. We'll see what happens.
As disappointing as this is, it's not like Scott or Drew or Mike have seen their teams win titles either, but nobody waxes poetic on the mysticism of a lack of Brewer or Mariner titles, so it seems like more of a tragedy when we fail. I haven't been around that long, so it's good to know I'll get a few more shots. The people I really hurt for are those like my grandma (the reason I'm a Cubs fan) and Ronny Santo, who might not be so lucky.

Ouch, sorry Cubs fans. I feel sorta bad for two reasons, 1. because I loved watching the Cubs this year and wanted them to go deep into the playoffs, and 2. because I know what it's having to go through a terribly long WS drought with the Sox, although it wasn't nearly that long for me as I wasn't that old when they won in '04.

the playoffs are a crapshoot and barely a season. it's entirely possible for the best team in the NL to go into a 3-game rut at the absolute wrong time.

Exactly, I mean 97 wins is impressive, but it's not like they won at such an amazing rate. It's really comparable to an NFL team that is 10-6.
Now, I am not sure if a 7 game series would make a difference because it'd likely be 2-3-2, but as cliche as it sounds, "making the postseason is only half the battle".

I'm sorry Mike, but in the end, the regular season really does not mean shit if your team cannot use their regular season success to go far in the playoffs. It's always like two separate seasons in one.
So I'm supposed to sympathize for Cubby because his favorite team, the best in the entire national league, are victims of a flawed playoff system that refuses to reward the best teams in the playoffs?
Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm. Nah, I don't feel sympathetic. I would rather lose in the first round in a sweep then lose in the world series to the worst world series champion ever and a team that makes a joke of the entire playoff system by even being in the playoffs to begin with. I actually am not a fan of playoff baseball to the point where I only casually follow it in the fall. It's absolutely ridiculous in my mind.

I'm all for cutting some games out of the regular season and making the first round best of 7, but that honestly would barely change anything.
If you want a more fair approach, you're going to have to eliminate divisions and give the playoff positions to the top 4 teams in each league w/ the best record. Until something like that occurs (which won't), making the first round a best of 7 will change relatively nothing.

As much as it sounds like sour grapes coming from me, everything you've said has been pretty much spot on.

I'm sure it sounds like sour grapes, but I don't mean for it to be -- I just don't like people complaining about successful teams. I am 100% positive that I did it about the tigers in 2006 and 2007 and I was probably ridiculously annoying about it as well. I'm not trying to tell anyone how to act, though. Just my opinions.
Edit: It is a bit of sour grapes because I'm always jealous of teams that are successful -- be it in just 1 year or over multiple years. I'd love to root for a contender more than just twice in my life.
I'm just curious, and I'm not being a smartass in any way possible, how would you change the playoff format? Like the NHL/NBA?
EDIT: I think the NFL playoff format would be great for the MLB, but as previously mentioned it would probably require cutting it shorter, since it would be winter by the time it ends in some places.

No no, I didn't mean it was sour grapes coming from you - just the fact that I was agreeing with you could possibly seem like I was agreeing because my team got bounced. Pretty sure you're one of the last people here who would complain about something just because it didn't benefit his team.

Nah, you don't have to be sympathetic at all. I wasn't saying that. I just meant that Cubby being upset is justified just like you being upset when the Tigers lost is justified.
Even if it was a 7 game series, it's doubtful that Cubs would have won. They would have still been down 3-0.
The Cubs made plenty of their own mistakes to cost them wins.

yeah I agree. An easy way to cut the season short is to get rid of fucking interleague play.
