I'm nervous about the sox injuries. We're not as healthy as I thought we'd be at this point. JD with lingering back stiffness, Lowell clearly not 100%, and the possibility that Beckett might not be ready to go for game 3 or even at all? Scary. Even without all three, this is still a dangerous sox team, but it's certainly not a team that would have the paper advantage.

The funny (sad) thing is, there was a point this season where I thought we had an overabundance of good to great starting pitching:

Dice K
Lester
Wakefield
Bucholz
Colon
Masterson
and the potential that Schilling would be back after the All Star Break

And look where we are now. With a chance that fucking Paul Byrd will pitch an elimination game.

He looked fine the first month and a half of the season before he went on the DL, the same time that I had hope for Schilling to return and for Bartolo Colon to actually make an impact on the pitching staff, which he did for a handful of games before returning to his injury-prone, fatass self and then eventually walking away from the team for the playoffs because he has too much pride to pitch as a reliever. Given Buchholz's no hitter last year, status as the Sox' best AAA pitcher last year, his solid April at the major league level, and a handful of absolutely dominant rehab starts in AAA this year, I don't see how his absolutely miserable return from the DL could have been predicted before the final, poor rehab start and even then it would have been a stretch to anticipate just how bad he was. In April, May, and June, it wasn't unreasonable at all to expect him to be a solid 4th or 5th starter at this point in the season.

Clay Buchholz failing this year is DIRECTLY related to another team being dumb and tweaking mechanics that do not need to be tweaked. There's a reason those mechanics accelerated Clay through the minors in the dominant fashion that it did. And to my knowledge, there was no impending injury within the next year due to the worst mechanics ever, they were just unnecessary changes from an otherwise near-flawlessly run organization.

Yeah, trying to change his mechanics was a terrible move, and one that quite possibly cost them the AL east. At least this is being acknowledged now, and while finishing the season with the Sea Dogs he was making an effort to throw the way he did pre-tweaks. Of course now his confidence is so shaken that one big hit is all it really takes to take a solid start and turn it ugly with nervous Clay, so for the time being his mechanics are not the only issue. Still, I'm keeping faith that this major setback only slowed him down, not completely ruined him.

And hey, there's always the chance that Bowden will turn out to be something special...

I could not be happier with not seeing Timlin on the roster. Hopefully this is the end for him in a Sox uniform.
