So I was talking to Billy of Good Charlotte online today (yes I'm serious) and we were discussing how much they make off of selling records and each member of the band gets 7 or 8 cents for every record they sell. I found it interesting that Epic Records has it broken down that much. Also, thats not a lot of money.

crookedgrind86: I buy my music
crookedgrind86: so people like you can make 13 cents a copy
499: yes
crookedgrind86: or whatever the insanely small portion is
499: 13 cents
499: I'm rich
499: I think its like 7
crookedgrind86: the labels get everything
499: I don't know
crookedgrind86: really?
499: yeah it's like 7 or 8
crookedgrind86: damn
499: but I guess it depends on the label
crookedgrind86: yeah
499: Epic is 7 or 8

You didn't know that? Pretty much no artist gets very much money off of their albums, that's why they tour. That's where they get their money.

Yeah I heard it was like 5 or 6. But yeah it's really small and depends on the label. Indie labels usually shell out more per record but usually sell less.

Nah I knew that it wasn't a lot, I just didn't know that it was broken down like that and that it was so little. I mean when you think about it, thats not a lot of money.
1 platinum record = $70,000 made
Obviously they make money from other things, but still thats not as much as you'd expect.

Records don't make the money. Touring, and Endorsements do. They don't do those big radio shows and TV interviews for free. and in Billy's Case he has Level 27 Clothing that he owns and kids buy it because it's Good Charlotte.

that would be so cool, to have your own label. i've done tshirt designs for events and stuff before and always thought it would be fun to see people wearing things I made.

google Threadless Clothing, design stuff and submit it to them, they'll make it if enough people like it, its cool as hell.

yeah, threadless is pretty great. a lot of the stuff people submit is already a lot like stuff they've already got though, it gets boring.
when i come up with a super kick-ass idea i will definitely be submitting it into them
Why do you think the record companies get so pissed about people downloading the music? It's because your taking their money, not the "artists"; I use the term artist very very loosely.
But that's pretty widespread information.
