Milk Eyed Mender is great but the lyrical content on Ys pretty much blows everything out of the water, its absolutely beautiful. For some her voice is a bit of an acquired taste I can see that but her lyrics and musical composition are unrivaled imo.

She truly is a phenomenal story-teller lyrically. Her voice is lovely in an unconventional sense and her harp prowess is admirable. I adore this woman's work. Ys is among my favorite albums of all-time and the extended version of Cosmia (off last year's Joanna Newsom & the Ys Street Band EP) is ear porn.
didn't like her at first, now i can't get enough haha. grew on me.
i get wood every time she squeaks or squeals.
Been spinning Ys a lot lately. I am really excited for new material. I feel bad for anyone who is completely turned off by the voice. I think her voice is one of the most appealing things about her. It really draws you (me?) into the experience that it seems like she is trying to create. She sounds really sincere, believable. She kind of sounds like someone from Robin Hood or something but I really love that because it helps build the imagery. If it was Jenny Lewis singing this, it wouldn't be a tenth as good as it is with Joanna.

Shes definitely one of my biggest inspirations. Shes so free spirited and her music is so organic, you can tell that its pure passion and nothing else.

This will probably come off as stupid but, do you, I dunno, adjust to her voice after awhile? I listened to some songs the other day and, while I liked what I heard, I couldn't imagine it being something that I could consistantly listen to. I feel like I'd have to take a five minute pause after every song just to or I'd get a head ache.
Anywho, she's coming to Bloomington the last day of March and I was going to see if I could get a ticket regardless if I "got into" her music or not

When I first heard her I hated her voice, I just grew more accustomed to it over time because my brother listened to her a lot, then a few months back I figured I'd give her another listened, and I loved her, voice and all.
You should definitely go see her, she was the best performer I've ever seen.

Well purely aesthetically, the shortest song on Ys is still a minute longer than the longest song on Milk-Eyed Mender, but MEM is really just an eclectic pop album. The instrumentation, her voice, etc. probably wouldn't sell to the masses, but the composition and form of the vast majority of the songs isn't much different from anything on the radio. Ys on the other hand rejects all popular and modern musical conveyances. To say it has progressive or Krautrock tendencies is to completely ignore its inspiration; its proto-proto-proto-progressive, coming from a time and place where living in a castle and having the plague were common facets of life. Both albums are great, but comparing them is apples and oranges and doesn't do justice to either of them.

I personally love her voice, but considering how eccentric it is in comparison to the homogenized female voices we're given in mainstream music and crossover indie stuff, I can understand how it could be a bit polarizing.

Well, screaming is pretty common though. Harsh vocals are embedded in certain scenes, and of those, there's not many unique ones. I'm not really arguing anything here, but Newsom's vocals are pretty unique. I empathize with those who find it too off-putting.

I don't find her voice really all that "out-there" and I don't understand how it's anymore "annoying" than, as an example off the top of my head, Tom and Mark's nasal attack as Blink-182. I've yet to hear anyone say, "You know, I love dick jokes and 40 year olds singing about high school, but I just can't get around their vocals," but for anyone who dislikes Newsom that's the first thing they mention. I'm just saying, in a scene rife with shitty, annoying vocalists that everyone seems to accept unequivocally, I can't seem to wrap my head around why everyone has such a problem with her voice.

That's the thing though. There's a billion scene bands that have that same congested voice. You may not find her voice "out-there," but it's difficult to argue it isn't, at the very least, idiosyncratic. She can be immensely polarizing.

I admit, when I was just listening to The Book of Right-On my heart skipped a beat when the vocals first came in, but then I got into it. Some people just aren't used to female vocalists singing like that. I think Todd was saying something like that a few posts ago. You hear Jeff Magnum or I guess those "shitty, annoying" scene vocalists singing in that manner and it's acceptable. But I guess it's a lot rarer to hear a female vocalist sing in a very distinct manner that doesn't follow the traditional perception of a "beautiful" voice.

Haha, I can't speak for the people who don't like her voice, and neither am I accusing them of being sexist, if that's what you're getting at. Since you "couldn't understand" why some people hated her voice, I was trying to come up with the most logical
and consistent reason I could...but like I said earlier, it's a personal preference when it comes down to it. I only see gender as being part of the issue in the sense that there are very widely accepted male vocalists with equally offputting voices, such as the previously mentioned Jeff Mangum. Again, it's just a speculation.

It's great. In The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford score, there's a lot of Ellis' violin-centric, Dirty Three sound, which is quite appreciated. It's great. In The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford score, there's a lot of Ellis' violin-centric, Dirty Three sound, which is quite appreciated. Both are fantastic at doing what a film score should, while translating to an enjoyable listen independent of the respective movies (The Assassination is a fantastic movie, for the record).

That film was swallowed up in the acclaim/hype for There Will Be Blood and No Country for Old Men. It got the Golden Globe/Academy Award nominations and the industry/critic acclaim, but that wasn't enough to move it up in contention with the other two, which is a shame. It's the anti-Western in every way.
For some reason I've never checked Joanna out. Anyone want to recommend me a good place to start?

I somewhat enjoy The Milk-Eyed Mender and don't care for Ys at all so it very well could have been me. However, to say I'm not disappointed with Have One On Me isn't painting that positive a picture really. My expectations were low -- especially with a triple album -- so to come away with a handful of real solid tracks is nice. Still won't be anywhere near my top records of the year.

Ha, the absurd length of the project worries me. I feel like it'd become passive background music pretty quickly, and skimming the first impressions article only strengthened my suspicions. I honestly don't think releasing a triple album is ever a good idea. Maybe someone can mention an exception, but I feel like projects that big are better off being released in different volumes or just trimmed down into one shorter project. Dustin Kensrue (Yeah, I love Thrice. Sue me.) said that he decided to split The Alchemy Index up after picking that Tom Wait triple album and being overwhelmed. That much material at once, no matter how good, is just too much.
