My friend found a 40GB iPod sitting in the snow in the parking lot at school today....lucky bastard.

It's not going to do him a whole lot of good without the wires and software and such.

You can buy them, it's not that horrible. You can download iTunes right off the internet and I don't think the Firewire or USB cables are all that expensive...

He didn't say, he just called to ask me if I lost mine and I said no and then told me he found one. He said it was kind of scratched up and it looked a bit older.
He's not even going to use it for music though, he said he's going to rip out the harddrive (he's a computer geek).

How can you say it's not that horrible? It's a 400 dollar device. Taking it is wrong. If it was anything with a value under fifty dollars, fine, take it. But it's a 400 dollar mp3 player. At least take it to the office or wherever you could turn it in for someone else. How would you feel if you had an IPod drop out of your pocket or bag and someone else just snatched it? Maybe none of you have jobs or a concept of money, but 400 dollars isn't a small sum. It takes me quite a few hours to make 400 dollars. Even if this kid didn't buy it, someone had to buy it for him and it's wrong just to pocket it, no questions asked.

No, no, no...I didn't mean it like that. I meant finding the wires and software isn't that horrible or hard.
He said if there were "Lost" signs around school he would give it back, but otherwise how can you figure out who's it actually is? If you sit and say, I found an iPod is it yours, someone could easily say yes and be lying.

Actually if you have the wires, and you plug it in, it tells you whose IPod it is. So all he'd have to do is find someone with the cables and plug it in.

Ah, this is true...but if all it said was "Mike's iPod" there's who knows how many Mikes at our school and it could easily be someone from out of town that came for a tour or came to watch a basketball game or play a basketball game too.

I probably would have a hard time keeping something that expensive and not feeling guilty about it.

If it was all that important to them then they should've taken better care of it. I say keep it if he doesn't know who it belongs to. Their mommies and daddies will just buy them another anyway, and it's not like you find something that cool everyday. Hell... I wish I had one, but I have grown up stuff to pay for.

i would question the person claiming to own it by asking them to tell me the name of at lest 3 of the playlists on there......
it'd be hard to guess that.

Finders keepers, losers weepers.

I would have to agree. I have been robbed before, and I didn't even have any money in my wallet. But just the idea that someone was okay with stealing from me pisses me off. I know her case is different, but I'd still try and give it back. I'd feel better about myself. Maybe your friend has no morals....?

haha you made a good point, i was gonna say....
but yeah. i mean i guess if it were me i'd put up a missing ipod sign and then quiz the person on what's on the ipod - how many songs/what artists, etc.

I must agree, if that was my iPod or anyone on this boards you would be extremely pissed. This person basically said it best so no more further in depth into it but I must agree.
