I don't think I've ever seen Jason say a word about this band on this website besides his "End of the Year" lists for 2004 when he said they were one of the hardest working bands. Weird. :shrugs:

"Once upon a time there was Jason Tate..."

The paragraph is written very weird. Hence the above comment.

Yeah dudes, Hawthorne has to work hard...it's the only way to maintain such a prestigous sound. No offense to those dudes at all, because I hear they're super kind...but i was really really really fucking pissed when I opened my mailbox and noticed that I had received the Hawthorne Heights issue of Alt Press and not that Matchbook one...FUCKERS. Not that I think Matchbook is the greatest thing in the world...but compared to hawthorne, yeah. In conclusion, I would've rather had a picture of Oprah Winfrey spread eagle on the cover then Hawthorne...and I say that in the kindest way possible.

Maybve the reason that they claim you like Hawthorne Heights is the fact that you and your website are steriotyped to have really horrible taste in bad emo bands and Hawthorne Heights takes the cake for those types. Note I say steriotyped, I don't buy that story either, but that might be why?

healthysmoker

I know Hawthorne Heights gets a lot of slack for being generic, especially in such a dynamic, progressive genre as emo/screamo but really, they have a few decent songs.

Okay, they have two of them.

Ohio is for lovers, and Niki FM (despite lyrics likely written by an autistic)

They simply seem like a convenient target for ridicule.

Hawthorne Heights: The Silence in Black and White
by Tim Krysko on Sat Jan 08 2005

Band: Hawthorne Heights
Album: "The Silence in Black and White"
Label: Victory Records
Grade: E
Available at: Interpunk

It's quite sad how low Victory Records has stooped in its neverending quest for the next emo or post-hardcore buzz band. The label deserves a lot of credit for getting this genre of emotionally-charged sing/scream post-hardcore off the ground. Grade was revolutionary for its time in the late 90s, soon followed by the stunning debut Thursday record, and finally the hugely influential Taking Back Sunday record. But if you look carefully at the progression from Grade to Taking Back Sunday, you can see a decline gaining momentum. And it got worse from there. If you didn't notice by the time Atreyu appeared, you must have noticed it when those lousy Somehow Hollow, Silverstein, and Glasseater CDs came around. The stench was unbearable by the time that Hurt Process record appeared, and now this Hawthorne Heights one is a new low.

This genre is overcrowded to the point of suffocation with mediocrity, but "The Silence in Black and White" whatsoever goes overboard into 'atrocious' territory. Vocals, lyrics, and music - Hawthorne Heights establish new lows for all three. If you weren't already sick of bands doing the sing/scream schtick, you will be by the time you've suffered through the eleven songs on this disc. There is absolutely no chemistry between the singer and the screamer; the former just snivels his broken little emo heart out in the most overbearing and phony manner imaginable, while the latter wretches and roars in the background in a laughable attempt to add depth and feeling to the band's dry and derivative music. There is not a single good song on this entire recording. I'd feel bad taking it to the used CD store so some other poor sap can drop a heard-earned five dollars on it, so "The Silence in Black and White" is going straight to the trash.

Now I just pray that Victory Records can stop the bleeding so they can get back to putting out good, innovative records once again. And, I pray Hawthorne Heights goes the way of Student Rick.

1) No, we don't hate Jason Tate. Some people in our office have issues with the dude, but I don't, and that's not my place to discuss, anyway.
2) No, we don't all listen to "the older sound of punk rock." Where the hell do you people get your gossip?
3) [EDITED BECAUSE I OPENED MY MOUTH LIKE A BIG DUMMY WITHOUT REFERRING TO THE STORY I JUST HELPED EDIT A MONTH AGO. I stand by this other junk, though,]
4) No, we don't need a better staff. Especially one that can't deal with one of our writers hearing traces of something in Cartel.

That's all for now -- anyone else got a question?

I give you point for the Bill and Ted's quote, but Hawthorne Heights is terrible so I hope this is an untrue statement for your sake.

apaaronb

No problem -- here's the paragraph where the writer mentions Jason/AP. Because I kinda have an itchy trigger finger when it comes to posting about the place that signs my paychecks, I misspoke a wee bit in that last post, but the writer claims he made contact with Jason before writing this; plus this quote is out of context without the rest of the story (which I'd have to charge you $3.99 -- or at least 10 minutes' browsing time in Borders -- to read). So here you go:

"Then there’s a guy named Jason Tate, who lives in a small town in northern Oregon, where he runs a website called AbsolutePunk.net. Tate has been talking, arguing over and generally being fascinated by Hawthorne Heights for the past eight months. He mentions that the band’s members occasionally post on his website’s message board; sometimes to say thanks, sometimes to say their piece. He has no explanation for the band's popularity, either."

ummm...hawthorne heights sounds NOTHING like a mix between Papa Roach and Linkin Park. I guess you and the guys at download.com are both smoking some pretty good crack. Papa Roach and Linkin Park are both rap/rock bands and Hawthorne Heights is a screamo band. Last time I checked, rap and emo have nothing to do with each other. dude no....people might consider Atmosphere emo, but those people are very, very wrong. Just because a rap group is on a punk label doesn't mean shit. I think this is where people get these misconceptions. Fueled By Ramen signed the hip hop group Gym Class Heroes. They have guest appearances from Fall Out Boy on their CD, but they are none more than a hip hop group on their own. I, myself, have listened to Atmosphere for years and that group is NOT emo. Atmosphere is underground rap. When emo bands get emcees then you can tell me Atmosphere is emo.

Split cover (Hawthorne Heights / Matchbook Romance)

Damn I didn't know it was a split cover, subscription sent me the Hawthorne Heights cover and I can't stand them. Oh well the inside articles are the same so whatever.

Yea when I started reading the article (I was curious, I respect them but I don't like their music), and read the thing about Tate I just sat there puzzled. I've never heard Tate say anything that is close to an opinion about the band. Actually, the only people I really know of on this site that have a formed opinion of the band aren't in the staff. AP is mostly a very solid magazine; probably the best music magazine I can think of, but some of their writers, especially reviewers, really need to check their facts and look over things twice.

And honestly I respect Hawthorne Heights and what they're doing cause they seem very humble and thankful, but I'm so sick of hearing this "hardest working" band stuff and all that. Most all bands coming up these days are hard working, its just that some don't receieve the recognition and success that Hawthorne Heights has achieved, though they probably deserve it more.

One more thing, did anyone read the page on As I Lay Dying? Have they really sold over 100,000 copies of their CD cause that would be crazy.
