Ex-Count Me Out. They used to sound way too much like Quicksand, now they only sort of sound like Quicksand, but one of their guitar players is a dental student at VCU so they don't do much.

It's hard to imagine ex-members of Give Up the Ghost, Count Me Out, and Striking Distance

I'm not sure which member was from Give Up The Ghost, but I know he started to going to VCU for college shortly after they changed their name, and he stopped going because all of the kids into hardcore at the school knew who he was and wouldn't leave him alone.
they changed their name? you mean American Nightmare to Give Up the Ghost?

Yea, that's what I'm talking about. He started going here shortly after that period of time.
I call bullshit none of those names match up with any names on Give Up the Ghosts wikipedia, and I doubt hardcore fans would skip any member of a hype band like that. Even Frank Iero was noted and he was like only a touring guitarist. lol

Yea, I have no idea, I just know the Count Me Out dudes. In any case, it's fucked up about the college thing, regardless.
lol at 3 of their members going on to form cloak/dagger. that band is fucking horrendous, what went wrong? how in the world do you go BACKWARDS in music progression? that just doesn't seem possible/rare occurrence. From Good to Bad? How crazy.
ThemChains

I've only seen Cloak/Dagger live, never heard their album stuff, but they're a good listen live. And they play Hollywood Grill sometimes, which is awesome.

The Arhtur Ashe monument on Monument Ave. The other good one is Jefferson Davis, because all of the inscriptions on the monument make it sound like the South won the Civil War.

The only thing that sucks about it is because I live in Carytown, the parking spots behind my house get stolen from us by assholes if we leave them open. And no, the Raygun was closed down for many reasons...now it is some over-priced stupid fucking bagel shop.

a bagel shop? man that sucks. dude ive heard good things about the national and toad's place. i haven't got to see those places, but i think it's good richmond has some more venues now. how are they? and a few years back canal club was slacking big time as far as getting acts. have they stepped their game up of late? and is alley katz still going strong? i bet we've both been there more than any other place for shows in richmond. i've seen some of my favorite shows ever there. i hope it stands strong and presses on.

Here's the thing. For big shows, Toad's Place is money, the National is also good for bigger shows. For smaller bands/shows, Canal Club downstairs is real good, but Alley Katz is still tops. There are really good smaller crust/punk/hardcore shows at this place called Nara and this place called Ramakin's. There was this pavilion for a little while there were shows at, but it has since stopped.

I know this is kind of an old thread, but I'm planning on moving to Richmond over the summer and going to VCU. Is richmond an awesome place to live? How is the area? Anything I should know about it before moving there? Is the school good? etc.
I've been to alley katz once (saw every time i die) and thought it was the best venue/show I've ever been to, and richmond seems like it is show central so it should be pretty bad ass.
Also if anyone knows about any good apartments downtown let me know so i can check them out.
Any help or comments would be appreciated, thanks.
Oh, and as far as richmond bands go, I really like Down To Nothing, Swamp Thing, Bracewar

First off, Richmond is the best place to do nothing and have a blast. You can dick around here like nowhere else. Beware though, Richmond is trap city and you may never leave or actually grow up. Also, VCU is great depending on what you are going there for. Lastly, if you are going to VCU you don't want to live Downtown. You want to live in The Fan, Upper Fan/Museum District, Jackson Ward, Carver, or Randolph.

Haha, awesome thats kind of what Im looking for in a place to live, I plan on staying there for a while. I visited Richmond a couple years ago and I just got a really fun vibe from the city. Cool, VCU looked like a great school from what I've seen, Im a little unsure of what Im gonna get into but Im thinking of going into education and I know it was in the top 50 for education majors.
Thanks for the advice, I will look into those areas, I mainly just want something close to the school(within walking distance) in a decent area, and if possible, close to alley katz or the canal club. Whats wrong with the downtown area?
How are the venues up there? I know alley katz is great but how is the canal club? I'm thinking of going up there in march to see Bleeding Through/ Acacia Strain. Are there any other venues for hardcore shows that are good?
Im definitely looking forward to going to the united blood fest, I can't even imagine seeing half those bands playing at Alley Katz, should be crazy.
Also how are the venues in the surrounding areas like norfolk, virginia beach, baltimore, danville, etc? I know a lot of shows go through those cities and Im someone that doesnt mind driving around to shows.

The school, if you're going for education, is going to be the Monroe Park Campus. Which is closest to the Fan, and for a college student this is one of the nicer places to live. I live in the Upper Fan/Museum District, which is a very lucky place to live, it's hard to find anything for rent, and if you do, it usually disappears in a few days. In any case, Alley Katz and Canal Club are in Shockoe Bottom, which is Downtown Richdmond. Downtown is on the other end of the city from campus, you wouldn't be able to walk to class. Get a bike, live in the Fan, ride to shows (or drive if you're so inclined). VA Beach has Steppen Out, which is okay, Baltimore is a fair hike, but usually worth it. And Harrisonburg has good shows, and sometimes Charlottesville. One strong recommendation: do not live on Grace St. before Lombardy, I don't know the block numbers, but I'll try to look and let you know.

Alright cool, thanks alot for your help, I will keep an eye out for places in that area. There are a lot of apartments for rent through VCU's site, so I plan on going up there sometime, check out the area and apartments and go to a show while Im there. As far as apartments go, everything seems much more affordable up there, apartments in atlanta are pretty expensive. I know some of the apartments around the campus have utilities and all that included for a really good price. I can't wait to live up there though, Im starting to hate Atlanta a lot. Thanks again for the advice and info.
