I'm sure Palin will have a few rehearsed points and attacks that she will constantly fall back on. Should excite the base but any rational thinker will see right through it. Im interested to see how Biden goes after her

I wonder if Palin will sound as stupid as she has in the recent interviews. I think it could go either way. Part of me fears that they have made her sound so stupid just to "surprise" everyone in the debate, since that's what most people will be watching. I hope that's not the case, but either way, I can't see her winning against Biden (as long as he controls himself).

Oh wow, yeah, that blog is quite old. I was actually really emotional (and I was crying, too) when I wrote it. I think I could have said some things in a better way, but it was hard to at the time. I think I got my point across, though.

Anyway, I don't think you're creepy for reading it!

My Prediction: As long as Palin doesn't stumble (too bad), she wins this thing single handedly. Why?

Because she will appear to be the more "likeable" candidate - not because of rhetoric. She will smile a lot and deliver her memorized lines like she was talking off a teleprompter. When she doesn't know the answer, which will occur, she will resort to her story (son in Iraq, pregnant daughter, outdoorsy background, god, and her oath to reform) and people will get lost in her translation.

Biden can't be too aggressive or he will apear to be a "bully" (i.e Bush v Ferraro). And he can't take her too lightly or he will be overshadowed by the fact she stood toe to toe with his vast knowledge of foreign policy.

This debate is McCain's only chance of pulling off an upset. His campaign is done and there is no better opportunity to change the topic of discussion (from economy to Sarah Palin...again).

I know most everyone here wants to see Palin fail miserablly but I just don't see how her debate boot-camp could not have addressed the issues she's been having in recent interviews.

P.S. I hope I'm wrong.

I was thinking this exact same thing--but there will still be plenty of room for her to fuck up. However, because of the moderator controversy, if a question is asked that Palin can not answer, the GOP will cry bias.

I don't think the line is as fine as everyone is making it out to be, in regards to Biden being a bully. He needs to seize every opportunity to call her out and make it clear that she has no idea what she's talking about. He doesn't need to be a complete asshole, but he needs to really drive the point home that she is not qualified for this job.

The Obama camp has been holding back for awhile now, but I think tonight is what they've been waiting for.

I'm nervous.

Biden is a professional debater. He was seen as the winner of most of the primary debates he was in, debates which included much brighter political minds than Sarah Palin. There will be no major gaffes. He will make McCain and Palin look like idiots when foreign policy issues arise.

I have a feeling that Biden will be pretty guarded, so as to not sound "sexist" or like a bully. He'll probably be short on words so as not to gaffe.

I also think that Palin will be very short and very general. From hearing about her past debates (which apparently she did great in), she makes very general, postive statements and glosses over details.

I don't think Palin could look a whole lot worse than she does now. So as long as she isn't that bad she will almost be "winning" in a way. I don't really see a winner. The point of the debate is simply another way for the public to see if the candidates really know what they are talking about. She could do perfect and just KILL Biden and it really wouldn't matter a whole lot. Everyone has seen or heard about the interviews. Besides, she'll continue to sound stupid in every other possible way outside of this debate.

For Biden to "win": Keep it short. Attack McCain, not Palin. Don't sound like a prehistoric dinosaur like McCain by spending the whole debate talking about things that happened 25-30 years ago. As long as you don't gaffe, "attack" Palin, or sound like and old dinosaur you will be absolutely fine.

For Palin to "win": Stay CALM. Don't let them see you sweat. Gloss over details and stay very general. DON'T makes stupid comments or contradictions. Just be simple and say things that everyone agrees on. As long as you don't make any errors worse than what you've already done and you come across as well-intentioned and not too dumb you will be fine.

Both campaigns would be safest if their candidates just keep it simple and let their credentials speak for themselves. Everyone knows that Biden is far, far, FAR, more qualified. He really doesn't need to point it out and risk looking like a bully. The only one who really decides if anyone benefits here is Palin. If she does really well or doesn't do awful then McCain/Palin benefits simply by not digging their pit of doom any deeper...for the moment. If she really does find a way to look worse than her interviews then Obama/Biden will probably find more support. Biden is more predictable and well known. It's up to Palin.

nfggc10
10/02/08, 10:28 AM
On AC360 last night they seemed to think the Palin was going to have a good debate.3 reasons why:
1) Obama supporters are trying to raise expectations because most are making it seem like as long as she's still breathing at the end of it the night will be a success. In private they would probably tell you they don't expect much.
2) Conservatives actually believe she's fully qualified and has the knowledge necessary to be our VP thus their expectations are high.
3) The format is very non-confrontational. They only get 30 seconds a piece to counter arguments which isn't much time. She'll likely give her talking points and smile for her full two minutes.

I'm surprised the McCain campaign hasn't released their victory ad yet.

blindrider529
10/02/08, 10:35 AM
I really do think that as long as she doesn't start crying she will be fine.

I've honestly been able to imagine her crying or asking for a pause when I've daydreamed about this debate (sometimes work is boring). If the format was like it was with Obama/McCain I could really see that happening.

Since it will pretty much just be a series of short speeches and no confrontation I can see her sliding by very easily (which pretty much equates to a win for her given the incredibly low expectations for her).

It won't matter though. Her public image is pretty concrete, and I don't seeing her getting any better at interviews AFTER the debate. Even if she does fine she will continue to look dumb in interviews and everyone will forget about the debate.

I'm surprised the McCain campaign hasn't released their victory ad yet.haha for real!

Tonight's debate is not likely to be a game changer in the polls (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dan_Quayle#Vice_Presidential_candid ate)
There was much criticism of Quayle after the campaign's televised vice-presidential debate, in which he compared his amount of Congressional experience to that of John F. Kennedy when he was running for president. Democratic candidate Lloyd Bentsen said in rebuttal, "Senator, I served with Jack Kennedy. I knew Jack Kennedy. Jack Kennedy was a friend of mine. Senator, you're no Jack Kennedy," to which a noticeably surprised and unprepared Quayle replied, "That was really uncalled for, Senator," as both applause and boos were heard from the debate audience. Bentsen replied that it was Quayle who had made the initial comparison. Quayle's reaction to Bentsen's comment was played and replayed by the Democrats in their subsequent television ads as an announcer intoned: "Quayle: just a heartbeat away." Comedians exploited the exchange, and an increasing number of editorial cartoons depicted Quayle as an infant or child. Though the controversy generated much press, public opinion polls did not significantly change [bolded mine], and the Republicans maintained a solid lead.

She's been preparing for this for less than a month.
It's like studying for a test in a class you didn't pay attention to all semester.

I find it odd people think she's going to win.
With the McCain/Obama debate all that was expected of Obama on Foreign Policy was to match McCain. I cannot see Palin matching Biden on domestic or foreign affairs in anyway.

The economy will be focused on heavily, which is in favor of Biden, and when the two are compared on Foreign policy I can't see her matching him, it's his special area, he knows much more about foreign affairs than she could ever, even with her studying for the past month. I really don't see how he won't be the clear winner.

But who knows until it happens. Biden will focus on getting his facts straight and not making gaffes and that's all he has to do. Palin has to win over the people she's lost in the last month, which is a much more difficult feat.

If only she would debate Katie Couric...
I think it will be apparent through her rhetoric that she's crammed the information she's been given.
Even if the debate isn't confrontational, she's usually her own worst enemy and the public already has an image of her that isn't likely to change simply from this debate.

I was thinking that at some point he ought to say something about how he knows what it feels like to be looked at as someone who constantly gaffes. He could say something in the vein of poking fun at himself for being considered this "gaffe-machine" while displaying kind of a caring touch for letting Palin know that he knows what it's like to be laughed publicly for making dumb comments. If I were him I would only say something if there just happened to be the right timing.

I mean, I think if it came up and if he was gentle about finding that common ground between their political personalities it could come off as very endearing and sweet. It certainly wouldn't make people second-guess their opinions of her, and it could be a positive for his "image."

Good thing about Biden is that he seems pretty self-aware of himself. Case in point:
XberX_t-WvI
I hope to god he has another moment like that tonight. I think Biden just has to be balanced enough to be personal with people (which shouldn't be hard) without going over the top and just be specific with the issues. Hopefully he is prepared in that regard.

My bet is that he will. Given that they both have been known for their mouths I can't imagine that the moderator won't ask a question or it won't be brought up in some fashion. It would be the elephant in the room.

Clearly, as the candidate with less experience, Sarah Palin is a little jumpy. She is already talking about how she is just a “normal Joe Sixpack American” and if a bunch of journalists (like that known tough guy Katie Couric) want to make her look bad, so be it.

Still, I suspect Palin’s debate preppers have provided her with some all-purpose answers for Thursday night just in case. These could include:

1. “Bounces off rubber and sticks to glue.”

2. “I know you are, but what am I?”

3. “OK, so I may not know where Waziristan is, but I can see Russia from my roof.”

4. “Drill! Drill! Drill!”

5. “I don’t know the answer to that, but if you give me your address, I’ll have my husband snow machine over to your house and punch you in the nose.”

6. “How those hair plugs working out for you, Joe?”

7. “How should I know? I am not Sarah Palin, I am really Tina Fey.”

8. “Sure, I said, ‘Putin rears his head and comes into the airspace of the United States,’ but at least I didn’t plagiarize it.”

9. “The square of the hypotenuse of a right triangle is equal to the sum of the squares on the other two sides. Oh, sorry. Wrong cheat sheet.”

10. “How much do you really have to know for a do-nothing job?”

You think those answers would make her look bad? I don’t. I think they would make her look great. She would look witty and entertaining, and what else can you ask for in a national leader?

BIDEN: "Are you fucking retarded?"

*thunderous applause*

PALIN: "Joe, we need to lower taxes!"

*Biden deadpan's the camera*

Damn no vodka. I've got popcorn instead.

This is insanity...
The country is in utter shambles, the Cub-Killer "wins" if she doesn't start crying, the world economy is falling apart because of you (or so it is told...) and everything is just going to hell, but still you people make me laugh more than I have in months...
