I don't know if I like their music, but I respect what they did for the industry. They kinda drew people back to the music, after the death of alot of the greatest musicians of the time. I'm kinda stretched both ways on the Beatles; I grew up on them, but I think they're probably not what I look for in music.

Now, the White Album, on the other hand....

I love The Beatles. I remember there was a time when I was about 14-15, they were the majority of what spinned in my CD player. My favourite song by them is still "Ticket To Ride".

Plus, their movies were funny.

what? i didn't say i hated them. i just think there were better bands. i do respect them but their are other bands that should get recognition. its not like they were the first people to do what they did. they were just the worlds first boy band.

Ya, I respect the Beatles a lot, just fer the fact that they prolly brought the rock music to life... I mean, that's a great acheivement in itself! But, I do not like em too much... I DO like that song "Blackbird" a bunches tho.. and I can kinda play it on a guitar, so that makes it better.

i beg to differ. there are those bands that are overrated in their skll and their contributions to music, but the Beatles set the soundtrack to a decade or two. they started out diong music for young girls, but then broke through that stereotype-the pigeonhole the industry had put them in- and ended up making music that was innovative and creative. i think the Beatles deserve all the praise that they get for their music-- they ARE the greatest band that ever was. the Cure being a close second. lol.

Hmm...I'd still have to say that they defined a time period, but that's about it. People like the old blues artists, and people like Buddy Holly, the Big Bopper, they've influenced years and years of music. I mean, I know there are quite a few bands that kinda mimicked the "American Pie" sound, and, in multiple verses, alot of the people that I consider having greatly advanced music, they were mentioned; in fact, they were a good bit of the inspiration for the song.

*shrugs* I mean, they did advance an era, but, really, I'd take the old blues and jazz any day of the week, over Beatles.

what are you talking about....the beatles used it on ed sullivan, and chuck berry played electric....there were a ton of people before dylan...im a big dylan fan and im denying his influence nor his talent but he wasnt the first rock artist ever.

The history of the electric guitar goes back even further than that, all the way to the 1920's if I remember correctly. I dunno, take four seconds to look it up next time you want to make a rash, unqualified statement and you'll avoid looking stupid.

Maybe combined, but I doubt it. Iggy Pop and The Beach Boys owe a tremendous debt to the Beatles. Without the Beatles, no Who, without the Who, no Iggy Pop, it's the simple. The Beach Boys derived their influence from the Beatles much more directly.

And I absolutely love Zappa, but let's be honest with ourselves. How many LISTENABLE bands actually took visible influence from him? Frank Zappa was one of a kind.

I would also argue that the Beatles had a great deal of influence on the New York Dolls' style, which in turn spawned the entire New York CBGB punk scene (The Ramones, Blondie, Television, The Talking Heads, etc.) which then branched off and formed bands from the Sex Pistols to the Clash to the Dead Kennedys to Radiohead to the entire new wave movement and I could go on and on.

Bottom line, your argument has some merit, but it's still pretty off-base and the notion of Bob Dylan being the first to ever use an electric guitar in a live performance is nothing short of laughable. Yeah, let's conveniently ignore THE ENTIRE GODDAMN BLUES MOVEMENT.

Disagree on both counts. There are better songs (although it is amazing) and it does show elements of prog, but it really didn't pave the way for it. Pink Floyd, King Crimson, and Rush expanded prog so much more.
