View Full Version : bands/albums/songs you think should have broken into mainstream
what bands/artists, albums or songs do you think should have broken mainstream, but just didn't. post any that you just don't understand why and/or how it didn't happen.
I think The Starting Line should have broken a lot bigger with Best of Me, and the fact Island went almost completely unseen is ridiculous.
Also a hometown band of mine, Cauterize, definitely should have broken it big. They had great songs with catchy verses/chorus, and even had slow songs with great potential to be a strong single. Both their albums were incredibly strong, but it sucks they just didn't have a strong label behind them.

i disagree.... i dont see Get Up Kids as a mainstrem kind of band, I dont see their mass appeal....as to Starting line and saves the day definitley.... startine line was just an example of wrong place, and wrong time.
saves the day i can maybe agree with. at your funeral had the makings of a decent hit.

im not saying they have mainstream appeal (but if youve heard dont hate me, man of conviction, mass pike, coming clean, martyr me and such, those songs do), you just asked who shoul;d have broken into the mainstream. and i think they should have.

Probably the best band in the history of Grilled Cheese Records. They probably could have made it on to a major.

By mainstream I thought having some hits that made it to top 40 radio was needed.

Bands: This band called Love Arcade, some people here may have heard of them and some may not have... but their debut album is just full of all these amazing power-pop songs, and it's a mystery to me why they never got huge. The Pink Spiders are another band like that, Teenage Graffiti was catchy as hell and had so many anthems on it. I'd also say Ozma should've definetly had some hit potential with people outside the Weezer world, and Saves The Day should've had some mainstram success as well.
Albums: I've said this before, I'll say it again: Pretty. Odd. I don't care what anyone else says, this album is amazing and it destroys Fever. Weezer's Pinkerton is another one, but then again, I don't think it would have the same novelty to it had it been a sucessful mainstream album.

Frankly, I believe a great portion of my favorites who haven't become "mainstream mainstays" should, but then, that music is highly inaccessible and goes beyond fans who treat music as merely an entertainment medium.
That said, I'm surprised that certain scene acts didn't blow up to a greater extent.

not from a mainstream point of view. don't get me wrong, i like their earlier stuff much better than the style they went with on Tales, but from a mainstream standpoint that album was definitely the most accessible and radio friendly.

Agreed,
I think they're a great band, I'm even in their new video haha, but I just don't feel the new stuff is as good as CDADIC, that stuff was genre defining.

I used to love Hit The Lights, but the new album is repetitive shite, lets be honest.
How many tracks on that? And they're all pretty much the same tempo, atmosphere and lyrical content, it's repetitive and annoying.

This is who I thought of when I saw this thread title. It's so disappointing they didn't get bigger. A good number of their songs ("Choke", "Closer", and even "Porcelain") had the potential to be huge.

There's no IMO about it, Casually Dressed was their best work. Hours was, in comparison, SH1T! But still pretty good.

I keep thinking of possible answers to the thread topic but then I remember something about the band that holds them back, for lack of a better term. For instance, if Shawn Harris' voice wasn't as uniquely cool as it is, the mainstream crowd would've jumped all over A Band in Hope.

I really think The Secret Theatre should've by now.
On a note where people know the band: Erm, it's hard to think. Valencia needs to be much more mainstream than it is. Especially with the album sales. It's just too good not to.

Jack's Mannequin.
I know they're actually pretty big in a few parts of the US but there are no radio stations in the entirety of New England that will play their music, and I've gotten so many 'who?'s in response to saying they're my favorite band. It makes me want to pull my hair out.
I also second whoever said Pretty. Odd. was an underrated album. There is not a single song on that album I will skip and it might not sound the same as Fever but there are so many different sounds on it.
