Better without You - Seriously EP
Record Label: Criminal Records
Release Date: October 28, 2008
Better without You will be releasing their debut EP, Seriously as a free download later this month via Criminal Records. The band's aim is to keep the power punk party going. The dynamic foursome produce vast amounts of juiced-up chord rotations liken to the Plain White T’s and melodic hooks that shoot out sparks with chorus parts that rile up crowds. Better without You show many factors in their songs that resemble their musical influences, but their strong point is their skillfully crafted power punk ballads. They set their ballad “The Long Drive” at just the right degree of tenderness with the right measurement of power rock to keep the music’s adrenaline pumped while polished in a smooth coating.
The lyrics for “The Long Drive” touch on the album’s main theme which is holding onto the good things that come into one’s life, “I’m holding onto this night / Taking out photographs in my mind / It all feels so right so hold on, hold on tight.” The guitar solo produces tingling sensations as sparks shoot out from the chords of Myles Vlachos and Alex Hrybyk who also play bass on the recording, and the lead vocals of Ryan Braunstein sink into the melodic swells and ride the crests with a natural born instinct. The alternating currents moving through “Cutting Ties” shift from a frenzied pitch to a melodic drift while Weiss’ pounding drumbeats through “You’re Going Down (Not in the Good Way)” are energized by crowd pleasing, rambunctious packed chorus parts. The final track is a special treat as the harmony vocals of Jamie Hoskins interplay with Braunstein’s main line. It’s an acoustic rock ballad with a catchy rhythmic beating that gives the track a sing-along vibe.
Better without You are about keeping the power punk of their youth alive and kicking. Their EP, Seriously fires up the band’s furnaces with not only power punk but also acoustic elements and power rock balladry. They show another side to their craftsmanship when they hose down their power chords with tender rock embers, lightly feathered drumbeats, and buds of harmony vocals. The EP is a good start for them, and adapts to the power punk culture that has kept the Plain White T’s prospering.
