hey, i NEVER post here anymore, but i'm so confused.

...I was reading that last thread about ska coming back in the form of ska/punk, ska/hardcore, etc and I just wonder what people really have against it....and WHY bands like the flaming tsunamis, last martyrs of a lost cause, and bomb the music industry keep catching shit?

I mean, all it takes for people to turn on ska is the presence of A HORN. one shine off of a brass instrument and the whole band turns to shit. nevermind the fact that bands without horns like Mest, Green Day, Suicide Machines, Rancid, the Living End -- all bands that play a TON of ska (read: music that hits on the upbeats) all get a ton of respect, but the band that DARES to pull out a trombone to compliment this no matter how similar the music itself is, is automatically trivialized as a shitty ska band. fuck that.

if you wanna listen to the sound of ska to come, which will catch up with this scene faster than people will think, check out the following...learn yourselves!

last martyrs of a lost cause

i haven't seen anything listed in this thread that's remotely close to being considered ska. playing a few upstrokes doesn't instantly equate to a ska song/ska music

i mean look at van morrison (random example), his first few records drew heavily upon a jazz influence in a number of ways. should those albums be considered pure jazz for that reason? no, obviously not. so why would adding a lone horn or upstroke to a pop-rock song all of a sudden make it a ska song? it doesn't

for the record, this isn't me hating on the genre. i'm a huge ska fan, i think it's one of the most grossly misunderstood genres around. but real ska has enough great great bands & artists to not have to try & claim that horrid pop-rock with a trumpet rubbish

no offense to any fans, but i don't get why bomb the music industry are so unanimously adored here. unless being so incredibly gimmicky & very very sub-par musicians is all apart of the allure?

there's nothing sub-par about them. jeff rosenstock is a genius, hands down. the chord progressions mixed with realistic/bitingly witty lyrics are absolutely unheard of. he has taken a whole genre that everyone hates, ska, and turned it into something acceptable.

lest we forget when his band ASOB parted ways he said "fuck it", i'm going to do my own thing...without the hassles of trying to make money or sell merch, and he's been mildly successful. viva la rosenstock!

El_Jeffe

each to their own fella. but genius was probably the last word that crossed my mind when i listened to them. i can understand people taking a liking because of the diy nature/ethics of the band, but that on it's own isn't going to make me enjoy their messy noise/music

where did "everybody hates ska" come from? haha, traditional ska is still big underground.... nearly everywhere. wonderful genre
