I get the feeling these days that there are so many bands out there, so many different genres to get into, different sounds to define.
It seems as though there has been just a huge explosion in the past few years, with endless amounts of new music. I think it's too much...
Opinions?

YES
Especially pop/punk. bands like all time low flood the "scene" its just GAY
Well there's a lot more shitty music being made then there is good music, I'll give you that.

And with myspace comes an instant availability of music, so many bands vying for a spot in the "scene".
pop/punk bands are definitely a main offender, just the same recycled sound, with different lyrics and slightly differenty riffs..

YEAH! and the lyrics are always about a girl or a failed relationship....

There's no shortage of new music. But it's a shame that most of it isn't what you would call quality.

Its becoming bland and uninteresting...
and electro rock is as guilty as any other genre..
Breathe Carolina is just shitty tween girl music, with a hint of screaming thrown in.. it sickens me

I haven't noticed. Certainly there has been an increase but I wouldn't call it massive.
Not too keen on Breathe Carolina, I can't stand the vocals.

How bout trivium, fear factory, static-x, cannibal corpse, carcass. Plenty of dickheads wear stupid metal shirts that I loathe. Furthermore there are too many sub genres, nu metal, death metal, black metal, industrial metal... The list goes on. Its all the fucking same!

Yeah, I mean, music isn't about playing and writing about where your heart is. Heaven forbid a christian who likes metal plays that kind of music, they should be locked up in their church becuase they're obviously crazy right? I mean come on, ridiculous.

It seems as though there has been just a huge explosion in the past few years,[/B] with endless amounts of new music. I think it's too much...
This is both incredibly wrong and, to an extent, correct.
There's no more music today than, say, any given point in the last century. I was watching the Scorsese directed biography of Bob Dylan the other day (No Direction Home), which truly shed light on the fact that, while the mainstream radio acts of the '50s were fewer in number than contemporary radio artists, there was a wealth of renowned, luminary talent all over the country influencing the next generation of songwriter. In Greenwich Village alone, there was a barrage of Folk, Singer-Songwriter artists simmering right underneath the mainstream.
The '60s, '70s and '80s all had a gluttony of artists, musicians, acts and as the decades wore on, various subsidiary, splinter genres were formed. It's not as though we've been inundated with a greater quantity of available music now than in decades past. The fact that digital distribution and filesharing makes much of this music far more accessible may create the illusion that there's more, when, ultimately, it's just more readily available, making your choices appear overwhelming.
Conversely, with sites like Myspace, it's much more easy for anyone to become "musicians." With A&R men scouring Myspace hits with the same furor that they slink around local shows, getting into the business is a seemingly less lofty accomplishment - it's a far less guarded, sacred thing. For instance - my shitty band, which lasted all of three years (now we do it for fun on the occasional weekend) and, at the time, was merely a Starting Line clone, was approached by scouts from Fearless, Drive-Thru, Sectoria and smaller labels indiginous to Michigan at one point, all because of a Purevolume (and later, Myspace) page and a video. That's it. We sucked, but we played something that was beginning to sell (2004-2005ish).
I think you're spot on kearn, the music industry has become just that, an industry merely spitting out so called "musicians" purely for profit. I can see the day where music is no longer an art but a occupation. It is indeed a bleak outlook for true artisits and music lovers alike....

How was No Direction Home? Worth seeing?
It's amazing, and most of my enjoyment was derived from the fact that, the first hour and a half was essentially a portrait of the singer-songwriter scene in Manhattan during the late '50s through mid-'60s, and I'm obsessed with the Beat Generation writers and the Greenwich Bohemian lifestyle of the time. However, that's a tangential rant that doesn't really answer your question.
It's very good, it's engaging. No Direction Home is the epitome of a good documentary, insofar as it's able to captivate viewers who don't even enjoy or have connections to Dylan. I first viewed it last year on campus with around two hundred students who could care less about the man and no one left the theater without being interested in him as a result.

Awesome, I'm definately going to have to pick it up this weekend and check it out then. Thanks.
It's a catch 22. We get exposed to more music and thus exposed to a lot of great artists we would have potentially never heard about, but we also get the crap. It's how most things go in life.

I don't think their is too much music,I just think its too much of bands trying to make it for the wrong reasons to quick, its like now adays some bands will never play a show yet will record a couple of songs and their automatically signed and touring for no other reason other to be famous, whats even worse is this will happen over and over again,I think you should have to earn your fame the old fashion way by touring not by how many myspace and purevolume hits you have then and only then can anyone prove rather someone is real and sincere with their music.

I most definitely agree with you on this, while music is great to have, too much usually equals more shitty music. The internet makes music more easy to access than ever before, and sites like myspace pretty much gives every band an equal chance in making it big. However, sometimes shit sounds the exact same, and trying to even decide on what band you should listen to to decide if it's shit or not can even be a hassle.

The most flooded genres right now are definetly the "scene" kind of genres. It's just disgusting, there's so many of them out there and they all get signed and get recognition, mostly because MySpace girls need a new profile song and think the band members are "cute". I just don't see the difference between bands like (get ready for a long list of crap):
All Time Low, Cute Is What We Aim For, Boys Like Girls, Metro Station, Forever The Sickest Kids, Mayday Parade, This Providence, We The Kings, The Audition, The Maine, The Friday Night Boys, Hit The Lights, etc etc etc. They all fucking sound the same, and you can't even tell me they don't.
And then there's the trashy screamo/hip-hop hybrid scene crap like Breathe Carolina, I Set My Friends On Fire, Brokencyde, 3!oh3 and alot more that are absolutely terrible as well.

what the hell is electro rock?
i haven't even heard half the bands mentioned here.
i'm behind on current music so i wouldn't even know if there is anything to like to hate. i've gotten into a few new things. def. suckered into this whole dance music thing right now....justice, crystals castles, glass candy, chromatics, mgmt....that's about it though.
the last new album i bought was a silver mt. zion's "13 blues for 13 moons".
maybe we'll have another great musical resurgence again. either way, something is always hip for a couple months. noise rock was a big thing for a hot minute. i remember when a bunch of people went out and got lightning bolt and wolf eyes and shit. and they pretended to like it. hahahaha.

That's all I needed to hear.
Yeah, I mean, music isn't about playing and writing about where your heart is. Heaven forbid a christian who likes metal plays that kind of music, they should be locked up in their church becuase they're obviously crazy right? I mean come on, ridiculous.
I have a lot of respect for Christian musicians. I personally don't like the music because, number one, it for the most part seems to be cheerful and happy, and only cheerful and happy. That's just not how life is. It gets to be a little much listening to more than, say, three songs. And number two, I'm not Christian and I don't like hearing how I should praise the Christian idea of God.
No offense meant, just my opinion.

what the hell is electro rock?
i haven't even heard half the bands mentioned here.
i'm behind on current music so i wouldn't even know if there is anything to like to hate. i've gotten into a few new things. def. suckered into this whole dance music thing right now....justice, crystals castles, glass candy, chromatics, mgmt....that's about it though.
Glad you're digging Chromatics. I'm a huge fan, and have been highly enjoying last year's album that essentially reinvented their sound into a Post-Punk, Synth-Pop sound. I rarely see them receive any mention on this site.
This thread is full of lose.

theres definately alot of music out there. i think the ease with which a band can put music out now hasn't helped. bands upload their shit onto myspace or whatever and stuff like that.
i think this had added to the saturation of many genres.

yah, i listened to the chromatics once a long time ago, but they didn't interest me. they were more..."punk" or no wave-y. just noisey.
i love that they changed their sound. and it's soooo good.
i don't know. everyone is really hyping this whole new dance music thing that's going on, but i like it. i mean, to be honest, i liked the whole electroclash and post punk revival that happened a few years ago.
it wasn't that it was "hip". it was just good dance music. way better than say some shitty techno band from germany. haha.

I agree with what pretty much everyone else has been saying.
:sigh:
Hit the nail on the head, couldnt have made a better post! yeah those screamo hip/hop/dance bands are terrible too. SATURATED
You say its not an insult (which it is), yet you seem offended enough to write a miniature essay about it..
Hahaha, how embarassing for you, making a fool of yourself by going off at someone who couldn't give a flying fuck on any opinion, thought, or statement that you have to offer.

yeah, when you stumble across a band which you really like its a little bit more special. especialy when their not every one eles fav band. its like a little secret you have and it makes the band all the more better. (is that bad grammer?? i think it might be).
i think this is part of the reason why long time fans of bands stop listenening to them when they break big, because that special feeling isnt there anymore

and you can't stumble across a band on the internet that isn't popular/mainstream?
weak argument.
and no, that's just bad spelling.
not listening to a band simply because they made it is a shitty reason. and obviously, that person wasn't really a fan.
i've gotten into bands before they got big, but i didn't stop listening on account of that.
i think a lot of the times, the music changes in a direction the consumer doesn't like (hence not listening anymore)

first of all, the pogues and stiff little fingers are irish punk. second of all, against me! is not "skate/pop punk"...thirdly, you listen to the worst third wave ska ever and oh yah...your choices for "punk punk" are terrible. you listen to the worst music ever.
except for Andrew WK and Queen, I'd say you should probably start listening to other music before trying to talk about what's mediorce these days and what isn't.
also, you should probably learn some better grammar.
i dont understand how only liking 10 or 20 bands devalues them?

You are a pretentious fool who, for whatever reason, finds your list of favorites to somehow be superior to Forever the Boys Like Bullets for My Romance and has an affectation of being an authority on the reasons an entire generation listens to music.
"All these people who spit out their favorite artists lists of 1,000?" You'd do well to expand the artists, acts and genres you listen to.

As I answered above....it was King Missile.
We have too many bands trying to do the same thing. But heres the thing it seems that no one can really figure out something new to do. This is speaking about the general amount of bands not the few that truely are doing different things.

Yeah, I think the market is just getting too saturated with mediocrity and people just get too much shoved down their throats to the point that the good stuff often goes unnoticed. I just think there's too much emphasis on image or trends than quality tunes.
I'll listen to whatever I connect with. If it's some generic hardcore band or some over popular pop rock band, if I like it I'm going to listen to it regardless. Sure there are overcrowding's in some genres but that's what happens with trends.

As a musician heres the problem i see. My friends ask me to join a band with them and i ask what kind of band. The answer "well we sound like a heavier paramore." People dont start out making music just to make music anymore they try to make music to sound like something. That is a problem that i personally have faced many times.

I'm lazy and I can't be bothered to read through the other pages.
Anyway I think the music "scene" or whatever you call it, has been flooded way too much in the last few years.
There's so many bands that either have the same look or same sound or both.
It's became hard to find the difference between the good or bad bands.
Also it's became harder to define genres.

Exactly. There's probably several "buzz" bands that have the same sound/look but their downfall is that they are just one of many bands doing the exact same thing. It's basically the case of "once you've seen them once, you've them all". I'll admit some of these bands "buzz" have a few good songs but that's just is a few good songs and in the music industry, your not going to last long with just a few good songs. Those who do have plenty good songs, do have staying power.

i don't think they're too much music, but i can't stand some of the music they put in the spotlight. songs like "shake it" and "get low" or whatever. sometimes i start to think that people have really stopped taking music seriously.
for example, my two friends meghan and gabby: i wanted to do a little test, so i put on "seventeen forever" by metro station (before it was on mtv or whatever) and then after that i put on "let it happen" by jimmy eat world and asked them which they liked better. both vigorously agreed that seventeen forever was better! maybe as 18 year old girls they aren't the best example, but that's who's buying the albums, kids our age.
