Gym Class Heroes.. but I have started to like a good amount of tracks on the Quilt. They will never even come close to the Papercut Chronicles again though

I agree with that, the first part especially,
I love all of you kids being like,
"Man, that band is a bunch of complete dicks for selling out, I hate them",
But given the opportunity, wouldn't you? Signing to a major label and getting much more exposure isn't really selling out is it? So they change their music slightly, who's to say they don't WANT it that way?
And I know most of you wouldn't turn down the money. Sure, you'll probably say right now that you would, but I'd love to see you faced with that contract.

how are they sell outs? THEY WERE NEVER SOLD IN. People do not understand that in order for you to become a sell out, you had to have been apart of something that was reneflecting what their music talked about, what their scene stood for, and maintained a popular "underground popularity" for a long time.
Fall out boy, although started as a smaller band.... makes pop rock music. They have the right and are "supposed" to become mainstream. Thats the kind of music they play.
Cobra starship...you gotta be fcking kidding me. Haha They premiered as a main song of a major hollywood movie...so right off the bat they were part of the mainstream.
the same thing goes for My Chem, Gym class heroes as well.
You wanna say Metro Station sold out too? Why? Because they were "unknown" for about 9 months, you thought it was cool that you liked someone that no one heard of, but then a year later they're all over the radio so it all of a sudden makes it uncool to like them...its dumb.
Pop bands are allowed to "sell out"...thats their job. No one starting a band like avenged or fall out boy saying... I never want to sign to a major label, fck major corporations, and lets just play music we truly care about (haha)
Want to talk about the term sell-out...talk about bands of the genre where selling out is actually "poo-pooed" on, like the ever so popular punk genre....especially of bands who have talked about making fun of main stream bands, and are all about putting corporations down...
AFI was a great choice, Anti-flag could be considered one (they signed on to RCA records, come on), same with Against Me. Now im' not saying I hate these bands at all, but these are bands that have had a long stretch/stay as a underground, fight against the norm type bands who decided to screw all that.

Yeah, of course I'd like to get my own music noticed by a big label, but that doesn't mean I'm not playing music I care about.
If I ever did get noticed and offered a contract, it would be purely for the exposure and distribution of the music that I care about making, I'm not just aiming to make it for other reasons, it actually is about the music for some kids, even if these guys rarely make it into the charts.

"Selling out" is such a ridiculous concept, because there are a thousand and one reasons a band can sign to a big label,
There's no way of telling if the music GCH make is made for a mass audience, or whether they actually enjoy making it, and it isn't touched by companies,
Just because music "sounds mainstream" doesn't mean they didn't make it all by choice because they like the sound of it.

I kinda get you, but I mean, I doubt many bands think about selling out when writing their music, of course getting signed will be at the back of their minds, but if a band is going to be dedicated to their music, it's usually their own stuff that they like,
I don't know many bands that would be dedicated to playing music they hate, there would be no point, even if it was to get signed it'd be shit for them.

it really depends on what you mean by selling out.
i mean, the majority of the bands that we listen to on this site are signed. yeah, i would love if most bands made it on their own, but they need to make a living too.
as long as they're doing what they love then there's no harm done. i don't mind bands making big deals with record labels because their music has made me happy, so don't they deserve to be happy too?

No I have heard him, he is a one trick pony that just tries to use the shock factor and fails at it or he talks about how he used to be cool because he was a gangster then he became educated.
He isnt that great, check out Common Market or Blue Scholars they are alot better.

Atmosphere got trendy once they hit mtvU. I saw them at Warped like 5 years ago so he's like the backpocket "mainstream rap sux, listen to this underground never-before-heard-of rapper"

Completely agree, Blue Scholars are great. I like some Cage here and there aswell, mainly the album Hells Winter though. Still can't believe there's a movie coming out as Shia starring him though...eep.

for the sake of beating dead horses, id like to say that even if an artist decides to make major label music they arent passionate about, if they had a career of good music with integrity, let them sell out. how can you expect more out of them than to secure their futures? eventually they have families to support and quite frankly honest music doesnt cut it on the business side of things a lot of the time, especially if you're like a lot of artists out there and didnt get your college degree before making the 18-year-old decision of just going out and touring. and not everyone can be radiohead and make intelligent music, yet be appreciated by a large sum of unintelligible music listeners. in fact only beck can be radiohead (lol)
