fucking Doomsday. Everyone hates on this movie. But this review represents how I feel about it:
I’ve got to be upfront with you: I loved this movie. I loved it — every frame — I and was sad when it ended because that meant that there would be no more explosions or lingering ass-shots of my new girl-crush, Rhona Mitra.* Yes, it’s flawed. Yes, it’s dorky. Yes, it’s Neil Marshall and Everything But the Kitchen Sink. No, it doesn’t make sense from start to finish. Yeah, it’s gruesome and cheesy and, as my husband put it, it’s like watching Genre Movie Bingo.
The only thing it’s missing is a rocket ship, and for a few minutes there, I very seriously believed that a rocket ship’s appearance was imminent. So okay. That’s half a strike against it.
But in lieu of rocket ships, it’s got humanity-eating plagues, tribes of cannibal punks, medieval-style fiefs with knights and torture chambers, rubber-wrapped gimps, futuristic soldiers with wacky hardware, cyborg eyeballs, embittered but noble old cops, corrupt and power-mad politicians, tanks, humorous decapitations, and Malcolm McDowell dressed like Henry the Eighth.
I. Loved. This. Movie. And it’s so deliberately, aggressively trashy that I suspect I’m going to be about 90% alone in this blind adoration, but there you go. I want to watch this movie again, and I want to watch more movies like it. I want to see more movies with Rhona Mitra in them, and I want her to wear very tight black clothes in every single one of them. I want Marshall to make a sequel to this one, and I want him to do everything just like he did in this one except I want a goddamned rocket ship next time, and then I will personally whittle him an Oscar for Best Director Who Ever Directed Anything, and I will lick it up and down, and then I will leave it on his doorstep, ring the bell, and run away with a big fat smile on my face.
RAR.
That is all.

i felt the beginning was a great and creepy way to start the movie. it was a really good visualization of the story and perspective of michael as a child but once it got to his older years it was just odd to me. the confusion of the time period is what ended it for me.

I just don't think Rob Zombie has a filter of any kind when it comes to making a movie. He just overdoes everything. There was nothing subtle about his "remake" and that made it a pathetic film, IMO.
But he hasn't done anything I've liked so far so it could just be that I hate that guy and know for a fact that he pissed all over the original for his own pleasure.

I only ever saw it on DVD at a friend's place, but it described my situation in life all too well when I did, which is why I initially connected with it. On top of that, I'm a huge ZB fan, and (because of his involvement) of course the soundtrack was great. I need to buy it still.

i respect your opinion, but i disagree. i really feel like rob zombie was doing something different with 1000 corpses and devils rejects. it wasn't in the stupid vein of psychological thrillers with twist endings or saw-esque gore films or any of those dime a dozen pulse/when a stranger calls/mirrors etc horror movies. i really liked zombie's past movies and i cant put a finger on why. its the same reason i really liked slither, it just felt different. i've been watching horror movies since i was a kid, it takes a lot to scare me now, but i feel like more directors like zombie would help push the genre in the direction it needs to go. i also loved the descent, one of the last movies i can remember that really scared me.

Yeah. I wasn't a big fan of The Descent either. It started out good and lost me somewhere in the middle. With Halloween, I just hated how everything was in your face. It lost the magic that made Halloween so good because it wasn't laid out there completely and kind of had to use your imagination for awhile instead of them showing you everything. I'd rather this have just been a Halloween sequel than a remake (or whatever it was) of the original.

i respect your opinion, but i disagree. i really feel like rob zombie was doing something different with 1000 corpses and devils rejects. it wasn't in the stupid vein of psychological thrillers with twist endings or saw-esque gore films or any of those dime a dozen pulse/when a stranger calls/mirrors etc horror movies. i really liked zombie's past movies and i cant put a finger on why. its the same reason i really liked slither, it just felt different. i've been watching horror movies since i was a kid, it takes a lot to scare me now, but i feel like more directors like zombie would help push the genre in the direction it needs to go. i also loved the descent, one of the last movies i can remember that really scared me.
ha, a little off topic rant there. but i'll add a couple more to the movies i love that everyone else hates: captain ron, encino man and http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/3/36/TheWizardDVD.jpg

I hate to sound like a total douche, but I feel like a lot of the criticisms of Cloverfield are from people who didn't "get it". So many people were upset that the movie didn't explain what the monster was, where it came from, etc. On the other hand, I saw the movie as one person's perspective on a given situation. Of course one person isn't going to know the whole story, and will only know the story through their own eyes.

*Don't confuse my use of the word horror as ignorance. I merely mean that it shares more characteristics with horror than it does with any other genre. And I probably wouldn't classify Scream as a horror movie at all if i were talking to someone with even the most basic film knowledge. Both are more like dark, dark comedies.
