Unless you're talking about mic'ing for live performance, in which case it may be a little different,

...Cue someone else that knows a bit more.

You would plug the mics into a mixer or audio interface. Are you just trying to be louder or are you trying to record?

If you're not recording anything I don't see why you would need mics. Most of the venues I play at supply the drum mics.

I have done about 15-20 home recording sessions over the past 5 years and I have only used a true Drum Mic kit once. I have found that just going out and buying more universal mics that you can use for multiple applications (and also get your other band members to help pitch in on) is worth the money. SM57's are great all purpose Mics and do a great job with snare drums(90% of live venues use SM57's to mic snare drums).

My usual home recording drum mic set up includes the follow:

1 SM57 on my snare
2 Overhead Condenser Mics
1 other mic on my kick drum

If you go to my bands myspace (http://www.myspace.com/thesecrettheatre) and listen to the last song on the music player called A Faint Flicker in the Atmosphere, that song was recorded using 2 condenser mics and that's it. No, it is not the best quality, but it sure gets the job done until you can get the backing to go into the studio.
