Yeah I've read a few of his books, he's at the higher end of pop-lit for me.
But still I find it hard to waste my time reading this stuff when there are centuries worth of phenomenal literature that I still haven't got around to.

i love much of his stuff but he gets talked about all the time on this site, that's why I posted what I did.
Choke, Survivor, and Haunted are my favorites so far.
He comes up with good stories, but his writing style is sometimes ineffective. He's not the best writer.

What do you mean by ineffective?
His writing style is very repetitive, and it weakens as the book progresses.

Survivor, Rant. One of those two. But since it's around Halloween, Haunted will probably be on sale. So yeah. Ha. One of those three. Survivor is probably his best work, IMO.

If you think it's all like "Guts," which I'm guessing is the story you've read, it's not. The rest isn't close to as gross.
But yeah, Fight Club the novel is a lot better.

I'm into Invisible Monsters, Diary and Survivor. I actually didn't like Rant all too much, and I'd seen Fight Club about twenty times before I ever read the book, so I'm biased and partial towards the movie.
I still have Diary left to read but I just couldnt get into it. Loved Survivor & insivisble monsters, liked haunted a lot, found lullaby definitely boring. Fight club is good but I find it overrated. Rant was quite boring as well.

Yeah i tried reading diary but it was weak, im surprised you found lullaby boring. It made me laugh alot. Invisible monsters blew but rant, haunted and survivor were the best in my opinion. He's the author of the novel that it's based on. I asked because a lot of people are familiar with Fight Club, just not Palahniuk himself.
Anyway, if you liked the film at all I'd suggest checking out one of his other novels. Like I said, I'm not a huge fan myself but most are at least interesting reads. And reading Haunted is a great way to take your mind off any stress you may be under, simply due to how fucked up it is.

Palahniuk had the potential to be a good writer. Fight Club and Survivor were solid books, but all of his books after follow the same formula and end up relying a lot on shock value, which definitely loses its luster after you've read more than two books of his. He's worth reading at least once, maaaaayyybbeee twice, but no more than that. Stick with the earlier stuff, like the aforementioned two or Invisible Monsters. Those are probably his best.
Although, a more interesting read than Palahniuk with a similar style of writing is The Average American Male by Chad Kultgen.

I wouldn't say he is "straight up awful," because that means he hasn't written any of value, which isn't true. Fight Club was a good book; unfortunately, he peaked there and has severely digressed as he's tried to use the same formula for every book he's written after.

Not even remotely as, "fucked up" as ,"American Psycho". Not even close. However, it is non-fiction so hard to compare.
Right, it shocked me more because they were real people.
Edit: And I found myself sympathizing for them at times, but then it was like wait, they killed an entire family for no reason.

Don't read that if you haven't read the book.

Guts was the best short story of all time, no question, although Haunted on the whole wasn't that great.

Chuck Palahniuk is kind of like the scene equivalent of Stephanie Meyer(s?).
Really overrated.
Although I'll admit, Fight Club is one of my favourite movies.

I've only read a few of his books but so far I'm definitely a fan! I can see why some people find his characters somewhat repetitive but I'm not complaining.
And I would never, EVER compare him to Stephanie Meyer!

I didn't mean they were similar as writers. I meant that the same way teen girls obsess over Twilight, "scene" kids obsess over him. I'd take Palahniuk over Meyer anyday, though, haha. Just the over-exaggeration of them is alike.

Oh yeah, I see where you're coming from. I just assumed you were comparing them as writers because I don't know any literate "scene kids" haha

I thought Choke was a poor realisation of a bunch of different ideas he was having at the time of writing.
I thought it was a REALLY poor novel. I was actually quite upset after finishing it, because it could have been so much more than it was. I didn't really have too many qualms with the way it was written, but just the progression of the story and the resolutions at the end.
Thinking about it is getting me annoyed. It shouldn't be doing that!
Should I still try Invisible Monsters?

I read "Fight Club" and thought it was a little too masculine for my interests. There's too much talk about explosives and shit and I thought the best part of reading it was when my friend (who has watched the movie) told me that the main character has MPD.

I'm not that big of a fan. Fight Club was okay. I thought the movie was much better, which usually isn't the case when a book is made into a movie. I have another one of his books, but I can't finish it. It's just too boring. I remember seeing another movie of one of his books.. Choke i think it was? I don't remember what it was about, but I do remember I liked it a lot.

Why would you force yourself to read a book unless it's for school? Chuck Palahniuk is great. That book, however, is not!

It doesn't say exactly where the kid is from. I'm thinking Asian or Middle Eastern. Russians would be cooler than that. Good book though.
