Anyone recommend some great music in this category?

I detest anything that's too poppy or centres around an overly catchy chorus etc. My favourite stuff is all modern post punk like Bloc Party, Interpol and Portugal to name a few popular names.

Btw if anyone knows anything out there that comes close to Silent Alarm I have infinite time and patience to hear it!

Post punk, what is that? It seems like the only punk bands around these days are pop punk bands. The bands people are naming (at the drive in, drive like jehu) are post-hardcore. I'm not being nit-picky but those bands were more influenced by minor threat and bad brains then they were by like the Ramones or sex pistols

Yeah, I figured since hardcore is a sub-genre of punk it would suffice.
