Go with both of these, excellent bands.

Definitely go with Broken Social Scene, get their self-titled album first, as the people I have recommended them to before seem to find that easier to get into as a first listener. Also, The Dodos, The Walkmen, Interpol.

First off , congrats on deciding to push away the over-hyped crap you have been listening to (exception being about half of what both the shins and death cab are all about ...) and deciding to expose yourself to a more creative listening enviroment. That and fucking ignore all the stupid band name lists in this thread, people around here just love to list band names, usually the same ones over and over and most them have almost nothing to do with what you really asked for here.

One great way too find and research a large base of Indie music is to listen to one of the on-line indie radio stations, two examples ----> (http://kexp.org/home.asp & http://woxy.lala.com/).

From there and after you have given them some serious play, kept track of some bands and albums/songs to look into, go to a website like http://www.pandora.com/ and start a account so you can insert player lists of band names to hear music related along the same paths and whatnot. Before long you'll have gathered a long list of music to enjoy and bands to look into.

More ways to expose yourself to more indie music is to pay attention to places like
http://www.indie-music.com , http://www.pitchforkmedia.com/ , http://www.soulshine.ca/ , and
http://www.plugawards.com ..... these websites are good sources for finding whats new and keeping track of the on-going happenings with bands you are already listening to. Hell even parts of a major rag like Spin can clue you to something new and fresh, you just have to seek it out is all.

Happy hunting.

i am really glad you posted this. i am glad because you are encouraging the looking up of new music... but you did shut him away from other music that people are trying to use to help. i know some people love to drop names of bands and show how unscene they are, but somepeople just want to help find/make a better music "scene"( for lack of a good word) i know i stated bands that sure dont sound like his fave bands, but they do dip into the same genres.

dont always think people are just trying to show how 1337 they are bc they are naming bands... i for one want to expad peoples musical preferances even if they like it or not... at least they are exploring bands that arent like the other bands he listed

SO GOOD
I can't make up my mind how I feel about them. I like them a lot, but I don't. I guess I don't get it? I realize it's their thing and all, but the songwriting is so strong that I can't help but wonder what it would sound like if they gave a shit how their recordings sounded. They've gone so far past low-fi, it's like anti-fi or something, and as a production geek that kinda puzzles me. It's pretty easy to keep a low-fi sound but not have it sound like shit, plenty of great bands have pulled it off. If their album sounded better it would probably be in my top 10 for this year. Like I said, the songwriting is wonderful - great melodies, catchy riffs, strong hooks, etc, but I just can't help but feel that the production keeps it from being a classic album. Who knows.

So yeah... indie/experimental recommendations.......

Dreamend - amazing mix of atmospheric dream pop and haunting folk
Ratatat - electronicish dancey post rockish instrumental goodness
Lotus - along the lines of Ratatat
The Never - the best band you haven't heard yet

I like the Dear Hunter, just think it's funny that someone would claim to hate pop and then rattle off a laundry list of bands that are heavily influenced by pop.

Also, the age argument is dumb and is usually a last resort for people who have nothing worthwhile to argue.
