pick the dodgers brandon!
I don't know what to predict, but I am extremely proud of this team getting over that hump. It should be a great series. If it does game 7, Philly will be absolutely crazy. If it is like the season series, all games played after Manny, the home teams will win their games, so Phillies in 7.
Thursday's game is definitely 8pm, I am not sure about the rest.

So im a Brewers fan, so i just got done watching the Phillies win the series. So here what i think:
If the Dodgers dont win one of the first two games, they wont win the series. The phillies offense didnt impress me, but their pitching was stellar. If LA can get the bats cracking, Philly wont hang with them
Ill go Dodgers in 6

I'm just hoping it makes it to game 6. I have tickets. Standing room, but still it should be fun.
My real prediction is Phillies in 7. I think the Dodgers have a problem with all their right handed starting pitching against our left handed bats. Utley is DUE. Rollins and Victorino are hot. Werth is scorching hot, but against all this right handed pitching he may struggle a little bit. Unfortunately, Ruiz is an absolute bum, he's an easy out.
Speaking of Ruiz, did anyone see TBS totally screw up Ruiz's nickname when he came to bat in the first game of the brewers series? To people outside of Philly that probly don't know, Carlos Ruiz is nicknamed "Chooch" amongst his fellow players. When he came to bat, TBS put up the graphic with his batting average and other stats, and at the bottom it said, "Nickname: Cooch" - I couldn't stop laughing.

That was seriously some of the worst journalism I've ever read. There was absolutely no reasoning behind his opinions other than "dogerz cant lose 2 gamez in phily those waving towels only work once lol!!!"
If he uses the argument on Lowe being better than Hamels because he is a free agent, then why doesn't that same argument work for Moyer and Blanton? The fact that this guy actually has a job at a reputable paper is ridiculous.
Here are some good figures: The Phils are actually hotter than the Dodgers, despite what people from LA might think. In the last 20 games, the Phils are 16-4, while the Dodgers are only 12-8. I'm not knocking on Ramirez, he can be a great player, but in 10 games against the Phils this year, he is batting .212. If anyone knows how to pitch to Ramirez, it's his old hitting coach, Charlie Manuel.
I hate watching ESPN and hearing their analysts saying, "Ramirez will stop at nothing to go up against his old team in the world series." Someone needs to send them a memo that EVERY PLAYER on both the Dodgers and Phils will stop at nothing to get to the world series. It's almost like they're insulting the other players by saying they really don't have the motivation to play hard because they don't hold any grudges against an AL team. Trust me, everyone will play their hardest.
I think the Phils are the better team in this series. They have a much more balanced club. The one thing I'm worried about is that it's obvious that MLB and FOX want to see a Dodgers vs. Red Sox World Series. I'm hoping this doesn't affect the outcome of games.
And one more thing - maybe a dodgers fan can shed some light on this - I haven't seen Furcal play in awhile. The last time I saw him on a regular basis he was on the Braves. Does he still have that absolute cannon of an arm he had in Atlanta? Victorino and Rollins get a few hits slapping the ball deep in the hole between 3rd base and shortstop, but with an arm like Furcal's the plays will be a lot closer. Let me know if he still has that gun.

Irrelevant.

If anyone "knew how to pitch to him," he wouldn't be the greatest right-handed hitter of our generation.

The less you listen to ESPN analysts not named Kurkjian or Gammons, the better.

The Phillies are always streakingly hot or cold. On paper, I think they are probably better than the Dodgers, especially with a lineup filled with power-hitting lefties.
I hate watching ESPN and hearing their analysts saying, "Ramirez will stop at nothing to go up against his old team in the world series." Someone needs to send them a memo that EVERY PLAYER on both the Dodgers and Phils will stop at nothing to get to the world series. Agreed, but ESPN is ESPN for a reason.

If this was the case, it would have been Cubs vs Red Sox in 2003.

The difference being is that I don't call myself a journalist. It's his job to analyze and crunch numbers and with that make an educated prediction. I saw very little of that, therefore I criticized his work.
But hey, all opinions aside, just three and a half hours 'til this bad boy starts. Whoever wins this series, I just hope nobody gets hurt. It would be nice if the NL won it all this year, plus I think I speak for everyone outside of the New England area when I say I can't take another year of Red Sox fans bragging about how much better their team is.
Go Phils!
P.S. I think I heard a few days ago on Daily News Live that the Phils actually have a better winning percentage against left handed starters than they do right handed starters. I was kinda doing some work at the time so I can't be 100% sure, but I think it was David Murphy that reported that. Utley and Howard need to come through big time.

Manny's career OPS is 34 points higher than A-Rod's. From a pure hitting standpoint, Manny's the guy. You're right about Pujols, though...assuming he stays healthy, this all becomes a moot point.

I'm not so sure it's a moot point if Pujols stays healthy. I'm not knocking Pujols, you could build a winning team with either guy. But the numbers Manny puts up in the postseason are on a level of their own. You could argue that Manny is the greatest postseason hitter of all time. When it all comes down to it, I would rather have Manny on my team for his postseason prowess than Pujols' year long consistency. Just my opinion, though...

Nope. I was agreeing with you, bud. I was surprised at how low Ramirez's average is. But you're def right.
One could make the argument that Pujols didn't have Ortiz hitting behind him, so he was pitched around a lot in the postseason, which increased his OBP. However, with Ortiz hitting behind you, you should see a lot better pitches to hit, so Ramirez's average should be higher. I'd say that's a wash. Either way, I'm gonna have to retract my initial statement and agree with you, Cubby. I'm still surprised at how low his slugging pct is.

As for each team in the AL having a better record than each team in the NL, I guess you worded that wrong, because there are plenty of teams in the NL that have better records than AL teams. I would agree that the AL is the much better league though.

As for each team in the AL having a better record than each team in the NL, I guess you worded that wrong, because there are plenty of teams in the NL that have better records than AL teams. I would agree that the AL is the much better league though.
He meant each team left in the playoffs.

Ahh makes sense then. And not only that, the AL East was probly the best division in baseball. My Phillies got to beat up on the Nationals and even the Braves to a lesser extent. The Red Sox and the Rays had the Yanks and Blue Jays in their division, not really the easiest foes.

Broken down.. 3.36 is not exactly a good ERA for a closer. And if i recall Lidge wasn't even closing last year. So for him to come to the Phillies and close, something he almost never did last year, and be as dominant as he has been is the reason why he won the award and the reason why he deserves it.

Cliff Lee came back from being demoted to AAA and nearly ending his career to be a Cy Young candidate....Carlos Pena was out of the league and had to sign minor league contracts before he had a solid 2007 season. What he's asking is what did Brad Lidge come back from?
Brad Lidge had, statistically, a similar year to last year...obviously blowing less saves...but, with a very similar IP, SO, hits, and WHIP. His runs against were pretty far down though, and as that blog showed, it was because he was changing his pitching style.
But its not like he came back from being out of the league...he didn't even have the worst year of his career in 2007
GiggsOho

10/09/08, 09:26 PM
I believe he got the comeback award because of what everyone thought he was at the beginning of the year. No one knew what the phillies were going to get with him. Many still had him in their minds as the guy who lost everything after that Pujols homer. Everyone sees him as coming back from being a mental case. Thats why i think he won it... if that makes sense

Statistically, in every category in which he can control, he had a very similar season beyond his HR's and ER's dropping. As that blog pointed out, he shifted his pitching style, thus fewer HR's and fewer blown saves. However, saves are also a factor of your defense and scenario, so I wouldn't call that alone proof of a huge change.
His comeback was more mental than statistical, if you are voting for him to be comeback POTY
