View Full Version : Better Comedic Actor in Serious Roles?

I've found this decision to be almost impossible to make. Even though Eternal Sunshine is by far my favorite movie of the bunch, I think that Robin William's performance in One Hour Photo stands out from the rest.

So, who has done a better job in serious roles?

Williams, but only because he has had more experience.

Also, he isn't an option but Adam Sandler has been good in more serious roles, as well.

Take the number 23 off there, burn it and replace it with The Majestic.

I don't really consider The Majestic to have the same introspective qualities that the others have. And, despite some ridiculous plot holes, I enjoy The Number 23.

dead poets society and the truman show don't count? and i had to go with robin williams. i loved eternal sunshine, but good will hunting was definitely better. and robin williams monologue to matt damon in that movie is just too good.

williams. i think he is a much better actor and also much funnier than jim carrey will ever be.

though i thought that steve carell did a fantastic job in little miss sunshine, and there was another movie too whicvh i cant remember the name of now.

agreed. reign over me and punch drunk love were great. spanglish wasn't anything too special, but sandler still did well.

Ryan Gosling does almost all serious roles, but i think Lars and the Real Girl is kind of the same genre as some of the movies being discussed above, and it's quite incredible.

williams because the serious roles he's in are more consistent than careys.

Lars and the Real Girl was awesome.. So was the United States of Leland.. Ryan Gosling is a tremendous actor.. I can't honestly say that I have seen any movie of his that has disappointed. I'm steering clear of The Notebook anyway...

I think Robin Williams and Jim Carrey are both funny in their own way.. Ace Ventura was funny in its day and Mrs. Doubtfire was also funny.. But Eternal Sunshine does it for me.. It is a GREAT movie

Shame really as he's a very funny guy. I'd have liked to see him next month, but the tickets sold out in an hour and they're going on Ebay for about £400 ($800) a pair.

thats a bit steep! thats unfortunate. the scalpers get in buy up al the tix and then ebay them for twice as much. not much you can do really.
there was that movie where he runs for president that came out fairly recently. i cant rememeber what it was called but i thought it was really funny. and at times quite serious. i really enjoyed it actually, though i unfortunately cant rememebr the title right now

I'm with most of you. They are both very good at all of what they do. I've never been a Carrey hater in his serious roles like many have. Everyone wants him to talk with his ass or make a funny face in the movies they see him in. He is definitely a more rounded actor than everyone thought of him. But regardless I voted for Williams. It was tough but I think that Robin Williams looks help him pull off a serious role better. He can pull off the creepy guy look better than Carrey so you automatically believe his role. I'm done rambling.

Also honroable mentions for Carrey (The Truman Show and Man on the Moon) I didn't ever see the Magestic or maybe I would recommend that also. Now I know what I am renting next time I head to the video store.

Didn't we already do a poll like this a while back? Hmmm....

But yeah... Robin Williams all the way. Dead Poets Society and Awakenings are better than anything Jim Carrey will ever accomplish in his entire life.

I think Jim Carrey's done pretty well for himself with his more serious roles. I'll always love me some Robin Williams, though.

Robin Williams - Patch Adams. I guess it was still somewhat comic, but Robin Williams was fantastic in that role.

HAS to be Carrey in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. No competition.

AND I put it back to a deadlock, so suck it.
