Senses Fail – Life Is Not A Waiting Room
Release Date: October 7, 2008
Record Label: Vagrant
It’s amazing how one album can change the public’s perception of a band. Thanks to remarkable improvements Senses Fail made with their second album, Still Searching, many changed their opinions on the New Jersey quartet. The band had found a niche, and Life Is Not A Waiting Room progresses from the themes and vibes of its predecessor.
Senses Fail does little tinkering with their successful formula, enlisting Searching producer Brian McTernan once again to mesh the twelve tracks into a seamless journey. Still present are Garrett Zablocki and Heath Saraceno’s sick guitar riffs, as well as Dan Trapp’s persistent work behind the skins. One new wrinkle is Hot Water Music’s Jason Black temporarily filling in for the departed Mike Glita on bass. But the glue to Senses Fail is still vocalist Buddy Nielsen. Once an easy target for his vocals and lyrics, Nielson has made incredible strides in both his writing and delivery, as the whiny screams from the debut album have been replaced by unforgiving barks and his lyrics have become his own form of self-medication of anxiety and depression.
Waiting Room begins with the dreary and slow “Fireworks At Dawn,” setting up the theme of the album. It transitions into the frantic “Lungs Like Gallows,” where Nielsen vocally shreds the track. Senses Fail definitely knows how to balance aggressive verses with huge hooks. The guitars zip throughout “Garden State,” one of the catchier songs in the band’s discography. “Family Tradition” emphasizes some gang vocals in the chorus and needling riffs from Saraceno and Zablocki, while Nielson touches on addiction.
“Four Years” and “Yellow Angels” work together, displaying two different vibes (one is aggressive, the other more atmospheric), yet both come full circle with the same outros. It’s an interesting way to combine themes and portray them in two ways. Sandwiched between the two is the infectious “Ali For Cody,” which is highlighted by a pulverizing bridge and Nielsen’s improved screaming. “Map The Streets” may stick out from the other tracks, as it harkens back to some of the poppier songs the band had created earlier in their career.
In the end, Life Is Not A Waiting Room takes what worked on the previous album (big hooks, tantalizing riffs, and self-reflective lyrics) and tweaks them just a little bit. If you were a fan of Still Searching (or air-guitar), you will definitely enjoy this. Vocally, we know that Nielsen will never sound like Aaron Marsh, but he has found his niche by staying in the range of each track. His vocals will never be great, but they will never be as bad as heard on Let It Enfold You. While this album gives us nothing groundbreaking or genre-shattering, Senses Fail have created a consistent product without resorting to the trends that are abundant in the scene today. Life Is Not A Waiting Room is full of anthems, beatdowns, and is just a fun-as-hell record to rock out to. Nothing more, nothing less.

Nice review Drew! I don't care that Buddy doesn't sound like Aaron Marsh, I just find personally that his voice grates on me. That said, he has come a very long way vocally, especially when he screams. One thing fo sho is that Heath sure knows how to rip on the ol' geetar!

Drew, this might be one of my fav reviews from you.
This was so well-written and thought out. Great, great job.
I've listened to some songs but not enough to make a decision. However, the ones i listened to I liked. good stuff so far.

Still Searching was better but I still think this records pretty good and Buddy has gotten better at his screaming especially.

Good review, mine said basically the same thing. They're the one "scene-y" band that seems to get some kind of respect.

great review - total agreement - this band is really fun, and the guitar work on this album is fantastic. if they had an incredible singer they would be unstoppable.
p.s. GREAT forgetting sarah marshall reference (on the front page) - just saw it this weekend.

Crucify me for this if you want, but I really liked Let It Enfold You and can still listen to it occasionally. I think it's because of my age at the time, and where I was in my life. I do like Still Searching and ..Waiting Room more, but nothing wrong with LIEF in my book.

Man, I love Let It Enfold You.. that is one of my favorite albums of the genre. It seems like LIEY was trashed a bit in this review.

So long as he sings in this band no matter what they did musically they would always be a bad band and that's the cold honest truth. It's a shame because Buddy seems a real nice chap but he should pick up a guitar or drum sticks sometime.
agreed 100%. i always felt that buddy was one of the worst singers (and lyricists) from all of the bands covered regularly on this website. the musicians in the band seemed to have progressed, while he just aged. he still sounds like complete shit live, so it goes to show you the wonders of the studio.

Let It Enfold You and Still Searching were both great. Buddys voice did get a little more 'hard core" on Still Searching from LIEY....But they are both amazing albums.

Good review. I do think it should have scored a little bit higher in my personal opinion. The band has done something here that most bands never do anymore. Instead of changing with the trends or reinvent themselves to satisfy a fad they have gotten one step closer to truly perfecting their sound. This band just gets better and better. I normally don't classify a band as "one of my favorite bands" until they put out three albums that I enjoy from start to finish and Senses Fail has just accomplished that.

LIEY is a great album, Still Searching is amazing, and LINAWR is really good. I dont see anything really bad about Buddy as a vocalist.

What I don't understand is that after six years or so of vocal coaching if he still sounds this bad, how bad must he have sounded in the first place and with him being such a terrible singer why was it decided he would sing in the band in the first place?
I can't defend his vocals at all, although I can't say that we can label the band "bad" because of that facet, good, well-constructed music is still good, well- constructed music. I feel like Senses Fail is very polarizing. When I saw them back in 2003-2004 in Chicago I remember thinking that Buddy showed more passion on stage than I had seen out of the entire local scene I came from. So, although he may not have a great voice, he gives it all to the crowd, which I think is where a lot of the love for him comes from. Plus, as teenagers in a band, you kind of just go with what you have, I'm sure when they first started they had no idea they would be on their third studio album one day.

i loved let it enfold you, still do. i also love still searching. his voice is never going to be amazing, but he a very solid and different sounding front-man. his vocals stand out and you could never confuse his voice with anyone else. he is also very consistent and strong live.

Excellent review. I was also surprised by how much I enjoy this album. I got Let It Enfold You and after a few listens I did not like it. Did not bother to pick up Still Searching, but checked out Family Tradition and that got me really excited for the album.
I can and can't understand why people hate on Buddy's vocals and lyrics so much. I can because there are better singers and lyricists. I can't because I feel, at least now, his lyrics are very passionate and honest and his delivery follows suit. When I first heard Family Tradition it was a "wow" moment for me because the last time I was listening to these guys he was singing about being a pirate and digging up a dead girlfriend and generally cheesy, cliche things. It was just refreshing to have them progressed so much.

Great review. I will agree with you Drew in that Senses Fail have found their niche and going to stick to it, tweaking it hear and there progressing from record to record. Though you can tell of a huge different in the progression of their music from their first EP/Let it Enfold You.

Its a shame that only one line was given to talk about the progression of the musicians since last album. Musically this album is simply amazing. The guitar is awesome in basically every song, and the drums are so complicated compared to previous albums. when did you really think "Holy crap, thats an insane guitar solo" when listening to senses fail? not really any time (maybe Shark attack or Sick or Sane) Well you pretty much have to say that in Wolves at the door and even Ali for Cody

Guilty Pleasure. Fun record though. Good progression, except the changing up of 'Wolves At The Door,' which had a change of chorus and everything from that earlier release that came out on Madden. Considering how much of a simplification that chorus underwent, I wouldn't be surprised to learn that it was a Vagrant decision. Razor blades still sell to the high school kids.

Buddy has the most original voice of any singer I have ever listened to. It's different, and I think that's what people don't like about it. And while he tours, actually while anyone tours a lead singers voice goes through a lot of strain. No one is amazing at every live performance.
His voice has an echoing wine, and I think it floods his songs with emotion, and is perfect for the bands sound, and for the lyrics he writes.
Whoever says Buddy is a poor lyracist should seriously stop listening to Miley Cyrus and Justin Timberlake. Buddy has the deepest, most creative and relatable songs in the business. There is no fake love songs just to put a pussy on his dick. He sings and writes from the soul.

Just bought the album. I'd only heard on song a couple times before picking it up.
After the first listen I am pretty confident in saying that I am probably going to consider this album Senses Fail's most solid release.
The only thing I've ever disliked about them is their vocals. Everything about them has gotten better since their first EP. The drums and guitars are MILES beyond what they used to be in my opinion. They are a much, much more dynamic band. If someone can stand the vocals of Thursday, Saves The Day, or New Found Glory (for the most part), then I don't see a reason why his vocals could be something that would turn them off enough to not even give them a chance. I know that could be controversial, but I'm not talking about lyrics...I'm talking about singing.

It's a good record, I get a Deftones vibe in some parts, and the lyrics remind me of the vibe of the past 2 Saves The Day releases, but I don't enjoy the overall mix, should've stuck to Chris Lord-Alge.

i dont know why everyone always rips on buddy. Save the occassional cliche, he is a great lyricist. And there have been points in the SF discography where he wrote lyrics for songs like no one else in the genre was doing. For example, "Rum is For Drinking, Not For Burning" was a song that had absolutely nothing to do with the typical emo lyrics of the genre. And even when he is writing about typical subjects, he finds a way to make them still fresh. "Priest and the Matador," for example, couldve been written by many bands outside of the genre.
And, Buddy has the only voice that, in my opinion, makes Senses Fail noteworthy. Without him, all you have is the same high voices over and over (A Skylit Drive, Saosin, Chiodos). I actually like to compare it to a band that I personaly despise, My Chemical Romance. That band would be nothing without Gerards voice. On their own, they cant sing. The rest of their bands, on their own, are run-of-the-mill. The whole is just worth more than the sum of the parts.

As a devoted Senses fail fan, I liked From the depths of dreams ep, loved Let it Enfold you, and learned to accept Still searching. I've listened to Life is not a waiting room, and have come to realize that it sucks. The songs are all boring, and many of them talk about the same thing(like falling asleep behind the wheel). None of the songs have a true "hook" and they all sound like B-sides to me. They are not cd album material. Sorry Senses fail, but it's true.

Is anyone else pissed off that Fireworks at Dawn didn't get played out longer? I always feel listening to that song I have to listen to it twice before any other songs. I love how the chorus explodes and the passion in his voice. One or two more records of similar standard and they'll solidify their position as my favourite band. So many other bands going by the way-side. Lungs Like Gallows rips your head off....."I give blood........."

I haven't been on this site in a long time because, frankly, I can't remember the last time I've seen anything of interest here.
That being said, and this is coming from someone who (for some reason) used to really like Let It Enfold You, I need to point out that this band has never been good, and the fact that some people perceive their extremely poorly written and misogynistic lyrics as insightful completely baffles me.

I do agree that the lyrics are terrible. However, the album's good for what it is.

I like LIEY but hate Still Searching.
This new one has given me renewed faith in this band. I dig it.

This album has its bright spots (i.e. Lungs Like Gallows, Family Tradition, Chandelier) but as a whole it is no where near the quality of Still Searching. That being said, it is still miles ahead of Let It Enfold You.

I guess I like this album more than I should since some of the songs are about my bro Marcel (R.I.P.), but any fans of Senses Fail's previous albums will like/love this release.

hmmm.. good review.
i enjoy senses fail's older albums better. the lyrics are more interesting. This album has only progressed musically. I dare say, i dislike most of this album's lyrics. #5 wolves at the door "i never thought it'd come to this, i'm more yellow than my own piss.."
i laughed the when i heard it. and then i noticed it isn't that great of lyrics. buddy has great ideas for the songs. i just dislike the way he presents them. ugh..
the bands players music is better. in let it enfold you most of the songs used the same chords. (most)
but this album is ok. i like a majority of songs.

This is a great album. Not the best vocals, but they never had that. Much better than their previous stuff.

I review a shit load of records (everyone i've listened too) and records that for me that get over 80% are few and far between. Notables include punk in drublic, nevermind, the devil and god etc but this record did aswell. lyrically its nothing great but its 2 the point and i just get what he's trying to say, and the hooks and shredding r pretty badass. Some people probably don't feel his voice but he definatly found the range where he can hold his own on this record. Fuckin good shit, for me one of the most underrated records ive come across ever
This CD is miles above Still Searching in terms of musicianship and song-writing. I love all of Senses Fail's albums, so I'm not trashing SS, I just think the guitar, and drums especially are improved on this CD, and they were pretty damn great on SS. I've seen them live twice, one time, Buddy sounded not so great, but the second time, he sounded very very good, so I'm not sure what his deal is. But regardless, this is a great CD, and your review summed it up pretty well.
Ok, Life is Not a waiting room is amazing when your know the lyrics. I would give a 10/10 for lyrics. And LIEF was the album that got me hooked on Senses Fail, so stop putting it down.
I think you downplayed the lyrics too much. For me, the lyrics were the main reason I liked the album. Ali for Cody was lyrically one of the best songs I've ever heard; though the instrumentals were mediocre so most people ignored it.
Senses fail is who they are, and thats that. Buddy Nielsen is a great singer and song writer. i'm pretty sure any of you dissing them couldn't do half the writing or singing he can. it's a unique sound. sure he doesn't sound like Greenday live, but can everybody? c'mon, you know they are good. and if you don't really care for them don't write stuff about them. Senses fail aww yee.

Yeah he sucks live but I don't care. His lyrics are the best thing about this band

Buddy is my favorite vocalist. His voice is different, which makes it better. I can listen to Still Searching all the way through, but I can do the same with LINAWR. I almost want to say Waiting Room is my favorite from them. Not because it's new, but because I've listened to all three of their major albums and always find myself going straight for Waiting Room. Just my personal opinion. I'm hoping The Fire will stay like Waiting Room for the most part.

Man, I love Let It Enfold You.. that is one of my favorite albums of the genre. It seems like LIEY was trashed a bit in this review.
ok good to know im not the only one who dug let it enfold you... lady in a blue dress and buried a lie were catchy as hell. most lyrics were cheesy though.

Still my favorite Senses Fail release. For some reason, I thought McTernan's production on The Fire was sub par.
