Trade your PC in for a Mac and get GarageBand.

I hear Kristal is good. I haven't used it though. More in depth than Audacity. Apparently everything works as a plugin though, not sure how that works. Looks like you need a fairly powerful PC. Give it a shot and see.

I actually started using Audacity. For free: It's a gorgeous piece of software. Also Acoustica Mixcraft is a great mixing program as well. A bunch of solid built in effects and the flexibility to really use them.

Cheap Radio Shack Mic + Cool Edit Pro 2.1 = Easy music
