The older 'Bleed for you' was better in my opinion, and 'Twenty Below' and 'Ashes, Ashes' sound kinda the same as the old-new ones. Huh?

It's when a band runs out of good new material they redo three versions of songs that have been out. They also redid a song off their original EP. That leaves 4/11? songs as old material. These 4 songs have been out for what seems like a year and the one song "American Classic" i beleive it is called has been out for I want to say 2+ years. I don't see this band blowing up at all, they have no staying power.

That's the most ignorant statement I've ever heard. When you record an E.P. with a no-name producer for $2000, you may want to re-record some of the solid songs again with a good producer for a $35,000 recording...where the quality is better, the song is cleaned up, etc. It has nothing to do with "Running out of old material", but giving those solid old songs the production and distribution they deserve.

What's so enticing about a band to buy their CD when you've had almost half the songs on the album? If you want to re-record old great songs, put them on your website to download or make them a b-side. You spend so much money to record an LP, why not put some new songs on it? I just don't see what's so special about this album. Over the top double vocaled clean production about hearts on the floor and blood for you, come on. It's just time for some originality in this scene. Not re-recorded garbage. How does that show true artistic talent if you have to dig back to your 2002 debut for your 2005 LP? Should MxPx re-record songs from Pokinatcha for their next album? I mean they have more money now to record so why not? It's the same argument. Plus, it is hypocritcal from their biography about their new album:
“We’re always trying to expand our minds and our music,” says Joe. “The new album is a little more diverse, but we tried to keep it more straight up rock ‘n’ roll. Our style has changed a lot. It’s a much bigger rock sound and less genre-specific than our last two EPs.”
How is it expanding your mind and your music to rerecord 4 songs from the last 3 years for your first full length? And diverse?

bleed for you and ashes, ashes were written for their new full length. drive thru just put them on samplers so everybody can hear some new stuff by HIPV. so in reality they are not old songs, they just got released before the record came out. and the new version of american classic is much better than the old one.
Yeah alot of bands do re-record and re-release songs that people have already heard. Not exactly a new thing with HIPV. From what I can tell it is gonna be an amazing album after hearing them live a couple weeks back. Still trying to figure out what the deal with that luchadore guy on stage was. And I mean how can you go wrong with the deal that Drive-Thru is doing with their cd....12 bucks for it and a t-shirt that comes with it.....COME ON thats a hell of a deal.
Pure Volume may have taken over porn as the best thing you can do on the internet.

You will probably see them slap up a new song the next couple weeks before the record drops on the 22nd.

i guess it's just more of a broader issue for me. this scene which i entered in june of 98 (thank you act your age by hg) has become so bloated to the extremes because of the internet. everyday it seems i will come to this website and hear about this "awesome" "amazing" new band who is about to drop their debut EP on such and such label and how they are going to blow up like crazy. and then its "oh go check out this band so and so on purevolume". the joys of personal discovery of yesterday just seem gone, and i guess that's something i have to accept. everything seems so manufactured and shoved down our throats. we've become immune to what good music is when everything coming out is "amazing" and "best of the year". people are crying armor for sleep record of the year for 2005 at the beginning of february. it just seems as though whatever comes out is made to sound like it is the best thing since sliced bread. it's time for a change. so start saying how ignorant i am and how if i dont want to i dont have to go to this website or listen to peoples opinions.

Bands re-record songs all the time... Lagwagon did one on their new album, Reel Big Fish's new cd drops in april and they re-recorded BEER, THEIR MOST POPULAR SONG.... get used to it, it just shows how the band has changed their style and how they can make an old song better... stop bitching, they are the ones that people talk about so they must be doing something right......
texasismyreason
02/07/05, 05:37 PM
Stop bitching? My bitching sends a message to bands out there. Who wants to buy a CD with old songs redone on it if you already own the original? It's just one less incentive to buy a CD, might as well get the killer tracks off iTunes if you want to actually buy any of the songs.

haha, you've been suckered in by the masses! you said it perfectly "it's all about drawing more people in", you just neglected to add on "with the same old shit". so if "it's all about drawing more people in" does that mean they don't really care to write new songs? just keep rereleasing the old ones til everyone knows them?
it is possible to have true artistic talent and make a lot of money at the same time, but i won't go in that direction, i already know everything you guys will say about making a living and all that jazz.

the worst thing ever is the "scene", the scene is full of kids that cant respect bands for what they do (though some bands have sold their souls to get where they are) most people come home and bitch about a band on a website (ahem...) and then people read it and they bitch more... the scene is horrible... a real scene is one that is there to help everyting, like a local scene... kids just need to learn to respect a band for what they do, though they need not enjoy it, but give they artists credit because they worked their asses off for it

True, you are right they did work hard to get a debut CD. But once on DTR, the work isn't quite as hard (lot bigger financial backbone to work with). If a band truly cared about getting better, they would welcome such criticism. It usually means more than one person could feel the same way if one person does. This recent trend of rerecording old songs just boggles my mind. I look at an artist like Ace Enders. He wrote a 5-song unreleased demo CD, 4 other old demos, an EP with 4 new songs that were not on the original demo, all new songs on an LP, came back with a full length of his own solo and already has a full catalog of all new songs as part of the early november. All with-in the course of a few years. Two full lengths of all new songs and an 8-song EP all in the same lifetime as hidden in plain view almost. So then i look at a band like HIPV who puts 4 older songs on their new CD and just have to question their true intentions.

i count ashes and bleed for you as old songs. they've been around forever in various forms. i think ive heard like three different versions of bleed for you. and if you're gonna bring up the acoustic ep, also note that it was sold as a for the fans kind of thing of where the songs came from and wasnt ever really pushed or put in stores.

Have to enjoy paying for your overpriced education in some form or another. Although I do beleive the scene is still corrupted in overused adjectives and that things tend to get overrated and overpushed.
Not everything can be amazing and be up for album of the year.
People hype things up to themselves too much and then will make themselves beleive something is truly amazing when in fact, it is mediocre at best.
Obviously that CD you've been waiting months for you will consider awesome and amazing because you've been waiting so long, why let yourself down after so much anticipation.
