I've been wanting to get into the genre of Death Metal for a long time, but I have no idea where to start. I don't want any of the Cannibal Corpse kind of stuff, I like progressive, jazz influenced stuff (i.e. Opeth, Cynic). Can anyone suggest anything to me? Thanks. (Sorry if I don't reply very soon, I'm going to be watching the debate.)

but what i CAN tell you is this: do your best to stay away from Circa Survive

I recommend going to Barnes and Nobles or Amazon.com and picking up a copy of "The Encyclopedia of Heavy Metal" by Daniel something or other. It's amazing, and helpful.

Scandinavian death metal is the only kind worth listening to. I find Opeth to be more than entertaining.

I have never heard of a Death Metal band with jazz/prog elements in the blunt of their music.

10 people were killed and dozens injured after a stampede broke out at a metal concert in Bandung, Indonesia. The show took place Saturday night and featured local band Beside. Doctors are reporting that most of the deceased were teenagers who were trampled during the stampede at a club which some say was filled over capacity, although no official reports have been made.
