I like how they have to say that it's the size of Kentucky just for those people who don't know how big it is already.
To be honest, I was more aware of the size of Iceland than I was of Kentucky

As someone who is from Kentucky, and not western europe, Iceland looks tiny on a world map, which is generally the context within which people from America (and I'm guessing non-eurocentric areas of the world) would see it. So it was news to me.
However, Iceland >>>> Kentucky. Kentucky has great scenery, but has so very, very many issues.

Hmmm, I suppose. I just thought that Iceland was a fairly well known country around the world. Besides, can't people just look on a map?
You're right though, Iceland is a nice place, by the looks of things.

I was also unaware of the relative size of Iceland.

Isn't Iceland the most developed nation in the world? That's the economic price you have to pay these days for success: failure.

Thats what happens when you live closer to Iceland than you do to Kentucky.

a girl in one of my graduate courses today is from iceland. she mentioned it a little bit. she was clearly distraught over the whole thing. why she came to indiana to pursue a PhD in the first place is beyond me.

Iceland is supposed to be one of the nicest places to live, isn't it? It's always seemed pretty stable to me, but I really don't know much about their economy or their government.
I know that Icelandic folk are very proud of their heritage, language and culture. Icelandic is supposed to be one of the hardest languages to learn...so hard that some people grow up in Iceland speaking the language and they don't even speak it 100% correctly.

From the looks of it, they also deregulated their banks, with the same results. However, people actually trust Icelandic banks--globally--so if they fail, it could cause problems overseas. But I'm no economist, so I could have this all wrong.
