View Full Version : Non-Interventionism?
Do you believe that Non-Interventionism is a good foreign policy?
How could we move America towards non-interventionism?
I think we need to address any current oriminent threats to national security (like state sponsored terrorism) and then start to gradually withdraw troops and foreign aid from other countries. By policing the world we are making enemies (and friends I realize) that hate us simply because of the fact that we intervene.
I agree that we should withdraw our troops that aren't in high risk areas such as pretty much all of Western Europe.
But giving aid to other countries has nothing to do with policing them. But I won't go into that since that's a different subject all together, but yes, I do think America is the new British Empire and now it's time to relinquish bases and needs that we don't need.

It's not interventionism that makes countries hate us, it is what we do when we intervene. For example, giving weapons to a dictator, which he uses on his own people.

I disagree. I think some countries are just looking for excuses to hate us. How can our government decided a fair way to distribute Foreign aid? There is no fair way, we will always be choosing favorites. I say just eliminate all foreign aid and allow the private sector to handle distater relief.

It wouldn't work in America based on our past, both the good and bad that we've done. Also our size works against us.
If you were to start from scratch though, it could work. (such as Switzerland)

Good point............at this point the US is the only superpower in the world. In times of disaster the world looks to the US to step in and help, and in the same instance they look to the US to blame when things go bad. It's what comes when you are on top in anything.

ironically our past is all about isolationism. the us tried to stay out of world conflicts but ended up getting sucked in like in ww1 and ww2. bush wanted to turn to more of an isolationist nation in 00 but 9/11 quickly dissolved that idea.
as for the one kid who rebutted doms argument. dom is completely right. some of the countries we intervene on behalf of are countries that are dictators which lead to the people hating us.
the hardest thing we have to do is stick to one idea. ie: if we help one country out because of serious problems and promote dem. we need to help a country with the same problems out and show that we are not just in it for what we get in return. but of course that will never happen.

I completely agree.
So the US should be blamed for the harm done with weapons given as aid? Should we go ahead and arrest all gun store owners for selling guns?

I think your assessment is wrong. As I've said before, people don't hate us for our freedom or because we have a lot of money, they hate us because these things we cherish come at the expense of their lives. I seriously doubt countries would hate us if we didn't have the "ends justify the means" type of ideology when it comes to foreign policy.

To say the US is ignorant to who the weapons will be used upon is absurd. Also, if the US loved democracy and freedom as it says it does, it shouldn't have given money to dictators, and should not be giving money to oppressive governments.

The US acts in its own interest! Should we instead act in someone elses interest at the expense of Americans. The rest of the world is jealous because we can act in our own interest and no one can stop us.

The rest of the world hates that acting in our own interest costs them their lives. You cannot justify that.
