Anybody in these parts in higher level Calculus? I'm in Calc 3 and was wondering if I could get some help here.

I know it's kind of late, but yeah, I took calc 3 last year and I'm in diff eq now.
Whatcha need?

Um nothing really I just needed an AP buddy for Calc. You're taking diff eq? I have to take that and Calc 4 and I'm done with math unless I decide to choose math as my other minor which I'm seriously considering not doing.
You mind if I IM you randomly some time for help? :)

Yeah, that'd be cool. I'm actually gonna minor in math, but I only need to take 3 more classes to do it, so I might as well. Diff eq isn't that bad, you actually might like it. It's more real world applications than conservative vector fields and that garbage.

More than you can imagine. Calc 1 only scrapes the surface of calculus. For like the first month or something you don't even do calculus (I barely consider limits calculus). Then you get into multivariable calculus, and an insane amount of work-related theroems, and partial derivatives and a lot of fun stuff.

Yeah we (meteorologists) need to know a shitload about vectors. And everyone has said Diff Eqs is a hard class but we'll see.
I think I'm actually 3 or 4 math classes away from double majoring in Math.

Whoa Erich, you're a meteorologist? One of my best friends is too, I'd never met another kid who wanted to be a meteorologist, that's so funny. He's at A&M now, but he almost went to OU because they're like the only other school around here with a Meteorology department.

Hell yeah. I'm Erich the weatherman.
Yeah I looked into goin to A&M but I couldn't get an application. But yeah I've decided that if I decide to do graduate work, I'd love to do it here or at A&M. It's an awesome school too.

haha, ok, then maybe you'd like vector fields because you like meteorology. I thought they were kind of lame though.
We seriously spent about 4 weeks on work though. There are so many different theroems and everything. It's not bad, but it's pretty confusing keeping them all separate and remembering with partial is with respect to which variable. Madness.
Diff eq's not that bad, but maybe it's because I like it more.

I'm all done calc.(Calc 1-4, I'm taking Linear Algebra now) It can be the simplest stuff if you get the right teacher, or the most confusing stuff ever if you don't get the right guy.

you'd only get calc 1 and 2 done by taking the BC exam...
I took AB and i'm in calc 2 right now...and boy does it suck. I don't see how we're ever gonna be able to apply the concepts of convergence and divergence...I completely hate that shit.
I have a question which will probably seem basic but see if you guys can help me out. If you're given a function like...f(x) = x/2x^2 ...and you're first asked whether it's convergent or divergent and then you're asked "if convergent, what value does it go to"...now obviously you really can't picture that graph in your head (well maybe you can, but I can't)...now can you just take the integral of that using u substitutions and get like... -.25u^-1 ...now I know what the graph of that would be convergent so would it be safe for me to say that since -.25u^-1 is convergent...the original function is convergent?
help a brotha out.

I'm doing kind of the same shit right now with power series and boy does that suck. Why would you want to take the integral of it? I mean you know what it is and if you're just trying to find whether it converges or diverges, you can just look at it and see that the power on the bottom is exponentially larger so it's gonna converge. I forgot how to find what number it converges to tho.

I'm so happy to have all my math classes over with, but we're using Dif Eq in some of my classes right now and that SUCKS. I had a horrible professor for most of my math classes. He was boring as hell, but his review guides were basically exact replicas of the tests. So all you did for his class was study the review guide really well and you'd get good grades. Although he was a fucking stickler for everything and it was a rare occurance that anyone ever got an A on his tests. I, however, got a 99% on my final for Calc III and got an A in the class. That is the closests anyone has ever come to getting a 100% on one of his tests and I don't think that day will ever come. haha

Have you done Integration by Parts yet? If not that stuff is super shitty.
Today in class we started something my Calc teacher said would "take you through Calc 4" which is 3 Demensional stuff. I about had an orgasm right there. This stuff is easy.

niiice.
ya we did integration by parts:
int (uv') = uv - int(u'v)... I think
it was annoying having to do it like...3 times just to get an answer...but whenever we had a question with sin or cos, we knew we'd have to integrate more than once.
We have a midterm on monday...it's gonna cover volume, physics applications, logistic equation, slope/direction fields, Euler's method, differential equations, exponential growth and decay.
I'm mostly worried about some of the differential equations and volume/physics stuff (ex. how much work is done pumping water out of a container in the shape of a right cone)...the rest of it shouldn't be too bad.

I think it's when you substitute u=equation and du=derivative of equation into the problem but yeah.
I hate that so much. Euler's was fun.
That sounds pretty easy.
You guys use the James Stewart book?
richter915
03/25/05, 08:11 PM
I find Euler's method annoying...it's just repetition...tho I don't care cause it's an easy ten points.
ya right now I'm using James stewart's single variable Calculus concepts and contexts: 2nd edition. I should invest in a study guide/solutions manual before we get into sequence and series.
I'm plannin on majoring in math in college (im a senior in HS now)...
Taking AP Calc AB this year, its not too bad, although i'm not doing too well. My teacher sucks real bad. She can't teach...I end up studying for hours to teach myself the work.
I had a D up until last week, then I took the diff eqs. test, which i think i did well on. And shes letting us make up a u-subsitution test that nobody had enough time for first time around.

my last calc exam was the most fucked up thing ever
I got an 81 which converted to a 100.25
the stewart book is amazing, its like the math bible for anything calculus related.. im a third year math major now, so ive done my calc and my two qtrs linear algebra and my two qtrs diff eqns and some analysis and in third quarter algebra.. blah blah. just to warn you guys, it gets freakin nuts once you get through calc. you can love integrals and calculating all you want, but if youre going to go into pure math (applied is a bit different) then you stop dealing with numbers and its all just... theorems and proofs. id recommend picking up a basic book on linear algebra and looking through it and seeing if you like it. i personally enjoy it a hell of a lot more than integrating by parts or applying green's theorem or any of that stuff which you do in calc 3-4 (i guess? we dont use that at my school) but its super cool. you can also use http://integrals.wolfram.com/ for free integration.
