So, after years of ignorance, I'm really trying to foster an interest in the pioneers of today's "scene," or whatever you want to call it. I've spent the last few hours reading a bit and downloaded the following bands:

Rites of Spring
Fugazi
Sunny Day Real Estate
Moss Icon
Texas Is The Reason

For you knowledgeable members of this forum, what else would you suggest? And is there a good place to find this stuff? I've had a bit of trouble finding some of the more obscure bands.

I know there are plenty of other threads dealing with topics like this, but I'm looking for a place to start/people's opinions

The real emo thread deals with all this stuff. Everyone there loves SDRE. If you like Rites Of Spring and other 80's stuff, check out Gray Matter, The Hated, One Last Wish, The Faith, Rain. Dischord is pretty helpful there. Bands like Fugazi, Hoover, Lincoln, were all pretty seminal as well. If you're into more indie rock like SDRE and Texas Is The Reason, check out bands like Mineral, Boy's Life, Promise Ring, and like a billion others.

If your looking for some of the stuff that influenced todays hardcore bands, you should check out Converge, American Nightmare, Agnostic Front and Dead Kennedys.

Never heard of, let alone ever been to those places. Near them I am only familiar with the town of Sterling in the upper northeast corner of the state.

Well that's good then.

This is straying off topic a little, but do you like The Dear Hunter? I never got into TREOS but The Dear Hunter is probably my favorite group at the moment. Just asking because of your TREOS avatar.

I enjoy them, but not as much as TREOS. I need to give them some more time, to be honest.

I find it funny people saying bands that were relevant at the turn of the fucking century. 2000 was not that long ago.

Like everyone else said, Sunny Day Real Estate is definitely a great choice. I'd start with their album Diary, it would be the simplest and most basic. I really don't even think there's a bad song on it. Seven, Shadows, In Circles, Song about an Angel, and Sometimes are my favorite.

can't really help with any recc's, i only enjoy the odd release from this style of things, but it's nice to see someone genuinely interested in the history, culture, future, & art form of the music they enjoy, rather than just keeping up with the latest & greatest obscure myspace forms of the genre. i remember taking an absolute infatuation to the traditional ska sound many years ago, which led me to all sorts of bizarre & awesome things, many of which got me into pretty much every style of music i'm into now... strange how that happens. anyway, enjoy the journey!

"The Promise Ring" said Jesus.

I came in here after reading posts and thought about saying that, but I dunno how much of an influence they were... great band though. I like them more than SDRE, but either way you should definitely check The Promise Ring out.

the get up kids

he Get Up Kids have had a lasting impact on the music scene, with many prominent figures citing them as inspiration or admiration. Blink-182 bassist and singer Mark Hoppus is a vocal fan, having proposed to his wife to The Get Up Kids song "I'll Catch You."[14] The Get Up Kids were offered to join a Blink-182 tour after Take Off Your Pants and Jacket, but they declined. [15] The members of Fall Out Boy were all heavily influenced by the band, particularly Four Minute Mile. In a 2005 interview with AP Magazine, Fall Out Boy bassist Pete Wentz stated that "Fall Out Boy would not be a band if it were not for The Get Up Kids." [16]
New Jersey based act Midtown has stated in influence that they were heavily influenced by The Get Up Kids, amongst other groups. [17] The Early November band members were all fans, and influenced by, The Get Up Kids. The Early November song "Baby Blue" includes the line "I don't want you to love me anymore." This line is taken directly from the Get Up Kids song "No Love", not only lyrically but melodically as well.[18] The band Hellogoodbye have been vocal fans of the band, an while on tour with Reggie and the Full Effect in 2007, two years after the breakup of The Get Up Kids, Hellogoodbye invited James Dewees and Matt Pryor onstage with them, and proceeded to back them in a cover of The Get Up Kids' song Action & Action. [19] Nerdcore rapper MC Chris is a self-professed fan of The Get Up Kids and Reggie & the Full Effect, having toured as an opening act during Reggie & the Full Effect's 2008 farewell tour. In addition, the song "DQ Blizzard" from his debut album Life's a Bitch and I'm Her Pimp samples "Your Girlfriends Hate Me" by Reggie and the Full Effect, and live versions of the song contain samples of "Mass Pike" and "Action & Action by The Get Up Kids.
