Check the replies to read a controversial review of a Bright Eyes show in Fort Worth, Texas. Apparently, Conor had some not-so-nice things to say about Texans while intoxicated on stage.

"Review: Oberst's rants hurt Bright Eyes' Ridglea show
02:36 AM CST on Wednesday, February 9, 2005
By THOR CHRISTENSEN / The Dallas Morning News
------------------------
FORT WORTH – Bright Eyes leader Conor Oberst has become the sultan of scattershot – putting out a country-folk album and a synth-pop CD on the same day last month.
JOHN F. RHODES/DMN
Conor Oberst worked magic with new songs at the Ridglea Theater in Fort Worth.
So it was no surprise to see him shooting wildly from the hip Monday during his sold-out show at the Ridglea Theater. But at times, the bullets hit too close to home.
The 24-year-old singer started on a familiar path, peppering the show with between-song rants against the war in Iraq and President Bush. But as the night wore on and he drained yet another bottle of beer, Mr. Oberst turned surly.
"I don't know if you know this, but I hate your [expletive] state," he blurted. "I'd put a [expletive] gun to my head before I'd live in your state."
It was one of those rare moments when an audience doesn't know how to respond. Do you laugh? Boo? Cheer? Most fans reacted with awkward silence.
Later, he claimed he was only joking and tried to cushion the insult by naming Texans he admires, including Guy Clark, Townes Van Zandt and comedian Bill Hicks. But he couldn't leave the Texas bashing alone.
"If you came to this show tonight, you're not a normal Texan," he said after another long chug of beer. "If you were a normal Texan, you'd probably be roping steers and raping Indians."
Maybe it was all in jest – a bad attempt to impersonate Triumph the Insult Comic Dog. But Mr. Oberst's rants put a damper on what otherwise was a thrilling concert.
At times, things teetered on the edge of boozy chaos, especially during the show closer, "Road to Joy," when a roadie had to hold up trumpeter Nate Walcott so he didn't fall on his face.
But mostly, Mr. Oberst worked subtle magic with songs from I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning, the folkier of his two new albums. He proved his knack for simple melodies and bold lyrics in "Lua," a lullaby about drugs, fame and living in New York City. Even better was "Land Locked Blues," one of the most stirring peace ballads written in years. Fans tried to croon along to "Blues," but Mr. Oberst stopped them as soon as they began.
"The whole singing-along thing is kind of a bummer," he said, after halting the tune. "It makes me feel like Dashboard Confessional."
Then he finished the tune and treated fans to a rarity, "When the President Talks to God," a Dylan-style folk ballad that was funny, smart and concise – everything his between-song tirades were not. "--2/9- Dallas Morning News

first of all, in case in the asshole missed the point of that "texas" joke, Oberst was probably referring to the Texan that is currently our President whom he obviously hates... As far as being trashed on stage and telling people not to sing along... it's his show... no one goes to a show to hear a bunch of other people sing along to a bands song.. they go to see the band perform their own songs...

Actually that "asshole" was very balanced with his approach, as well as mature. It really wasn't an attack, it was more of an observation article.

Obviously I'm a Texan. I love this state to death, even if I don't admire it's politics. I've been a lot of places, and I'm proud to call Texas my home, especially Austin. I however, am not upset by Conor's remarks (and definitely not by the reporter's, he did an excellent job).
Clearly, he was drunk (that's what upsets me more than anything, if I'm going to your show I want you to be able to stand up straight), and he was basically trying to say that he doesn't like Neo-cons, which you've got to expect if you're going to a Bright Eyes show.
He was a little too hung up on stereotypes (what with the whole raping indians part) but I think he'd see that if he stayed in Austin or Dallas for more than one night (as opposed to say, Lubbock) Texas is actually a very charming, cultured place to live. Basically it's clear that Conor doesn't know what Texas is truly like, although the part he's talking about does exist (and that's why I'm not upset) the rest I will write off to being intoxicated and not being able to choose the right words.

Obviously Texas has it's downfalls, but that's a horrible thing to stay to an entire state. There are people in Texas who ARENT like that, and also still LOVE their state. It's a fucked up thing to say. He's such a fucking dick, I wish I didnt enjoy his music so much (except 'I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning" which was the shittiest album he's ever released) because i'd love to hate him.

someone posted a link to this a couple days ago somewhere, and i was kind of upset by it. it doesn't change my opinion on his music at all, and it shouldn't for anyone, but now i'm starting to agree with other people who say he needs to lay off the drugs and alcohol a bit. if he had been sober, or a little less drunk/high/whatever, i don't think he would have said those things even if he does think them. i honestly don't think he's a dick, just an alcoholic and drug addict and i think it's time he goes back to rehab and actually stays until he's clean this time.

Interesting to see people rip apart the canvas at the first sight of a tear. A lot of sudden Anti-Oberst sentiment arising because of this. I'd like to see what happens if Nic from Gatsby's American Dreams shouts "I LOVE NAZI'S!" at his next show. Perhaps it won't be so apparent that they're loved and cherished by everyone.

i can't believe how stupid some people are.
1. almost everyone who has replied to this thread is angered by what he said, even those of us who are fans of his.
2. no one should 'die a horrible death' because they said something stupid while drunk. making those comments, even as a joke (an unfunny joke, at that) is really immature and stupid.
it's funny how all these people are suddenly posting saying he posseses no talent and is a terrible songwriter, too...especially people with further seems forever icons. i understand people not liking his music, but to say he has no talent? no one's backing themselves up when they say it either; they're merely saying "he sucks and if you think he's good you know nothing about music."
there's a lot of things people are saying and i really want to know where they're getting it from. where have you read about him bragging about being friends with springsteen? yeah, he's being asked a lot about how it was to tour with him, but i've read many of the articles in recent months and he never once bragged about it. he stills seems to be a very modest guy. and the dashboard comment has nothing to do with him thinking he's better than anyone else. he's made it before, it's nothing new; it just distracts him when he sings.
and i'm not defending him; i already said it pissed me off that he did that and that he needs to clean up.

I agree. Any other time I would have been offended by someone bagging my state but this is kind of a point prover in this discussion. i am all about speaking your mind. I love to read in on Conor's political views every now and then. where i draw the line is when i pay money to go listen to music being played. i didn't pay money to listen to a lousy drunk make shallow stereotypes of a state i really do take a lot of pride in. It's why i had an issue with everything Don Henley did at that show in Cali back then(even though he's from Texas...ironic). it's not civilized conversation or debate, when somebody has the mic, house PA, and guitar and you can't even sing along to his songs. i love Bright Eyes music, i stand his views, but he needs to lay off the booze if it means making these kinds of comments.
and i guess i should have been expecting some of this when i buy a ticket to bright eyes, but still, but i hate when conor disrespects is fans like that. i mean that's his money isn't it? shouldn't there be some amount of class? i don't know. good article.

First I think it's completely ridiculous when people say that he should die for this. Second, this is a lame excuse for people to come out and say yeah his music sucks. Personally, I don't like his music that much, it's just not my style, although I do really enjoy a few of the desaparcidos songs. But I don't think that's the point. By no means do I have a problem with the guy speaking his mind. What I don't agree with is the setting and the ways in which he did it. Making music is this guys job. That's how he makes his living. If me or you went to work one day totally wasted and started bashing whoever we don't agree with, we'd be fired. When I pay to see a band play, I'm not giving them my money so that I can watch them stumble across the stage and insult people. What he did and said was inappropriate for the setting.

yeah, definitely agree. what really sucks though, is that for bright eyes fans(even non-fans) he put on a truly incredible show. it makes it that much more frustrating. i would have the same perspective if it was Dexter Freebish telling Massachussets the same things(***not that one is worst then the other***). i just think it needs to stay out the live shows, unless it's a special tour like with what he did with REM and Springsteen. then it would be appropriate because you'd be paying for the show, and the political atmosphere.

Something like that would totally ruin an artist for me. If they openly said they hate where I live and that people where I live rape indians and brand cattle, I wouldn't be able to listen to them without thinking of that.
i disagree...i first of all think its stupid to get mad over conor voicing his opinion, partially cause its generally true (if you are to only look at stereotypes, history, and generalities...but then he's not exactly Howard Zinn, now is he? he's a singer) and mostly because to hate the music cause of the guy's outside comments is kind of silly and misdirected. i do agree that at certain points, when cowboys where roaming the wild texan plains, a lot of abuse was directed toward native americans, and i think that the way that they have been treated as a people over the course of the past two centuries is completely disgusting. i also happen to think that cattle branding is disgusting, but that stems from my opinion that meat is disgusting, and so i guess that is just a difference of opinion. i choose to confront the reality that animals are tortured for us to have a meal...some people have no problem turning the other way.
regardless, anyone who listens to his records/knows the band and goes to the shows knows exactly what they are getting into. if you don't like it, don't go. YOU paid to see the show...no one is making you go. yeah, conor's comments were a little bit off base, at least considering today's society on the whole (although i have never been to texas, so i'm not too sure about how native americans are treated)...but still. he has the right to say what he thinks...and he was drunk, so taking it too seriously is kind of ridiculous. but yeah. i don't know why he didn't pick some better insults...i mean, fuck, there have got to be some better shots you can take at texans, right?

eh, I think the more important thing is: why aren't we discussing the truth behind some of his statements? Or better yet pondering just what the first amendment says ...
If you are talking about the honesty in these statements there is none. Only thing that was honest was that he doesn't like the state. Last time i checked in with my friends who still live in texas they werent raping Indians and roping steers.

alcohol makes you speak your mind, unless you dink wayyy too much. but usually when your good and drunk you will say whats on your mind, without worring about the consequenses. im not saying that every musician should get drunk before their shows or during, but why is it wrong for us to hear whats on their minds? and like tate said, what conor said has everything to do with his music.

what are you talking about a lot of people here arent even mad at all about it. most find it funny. all i was saying if it was someone else that not to many people liked everyone would be extremely pissed but since its bright eyes its not as bad

This makes me love him even more.
I was at the show last night in Phoenix and Conor was only mildly drunk. He didnt say anything bad about Arizona but he did make a quick comback at someone that was heckling him. The trumpeteer was completely sober so I find it hard to believe that he was falling-over drunk on Monday.

Well I think that is obvious don't you think? It was very disrespectful. He's just giving poeple what they want in my eyes. ie: look at this thread. Josh
Oh well. He didn't mean it to that extent I don't think. Texas fans shouldn't take it to heart.

Anyone else think he's a total dick for halting a song and stopping them from singing along? They paid for their ticket, let the fans do whatever the hell they want. I mean, you're a musician with catchy songs, what the hell do you think they're going to do? Oh well, don't care that much.

I understand people not agreeing w/ Conor's comments, but to take away anything from his talent, musical ability, etc. because of them is absolutely ridiculous. That's like me taking away any credibility from Michael Jackson and saying he wasn't a musical / dancing genius because he says he likes to sleep in the same bed with kids (which I certainly don't agree with).

Now i'm one of them fabled straight edge kids and honesty i dont care if someone im seeing is drunk or stoned as long as their music is still ttruthfuland enjoyable. I saw Bright Eyes two weeks ago he was drunk and hungover as he stated and it was the best pperformanceI've ever seen. What he does is his choice and his alone. If you dont like it oh well. But to wish death or to say its because he's high and mighty is just lashing out with ignorance. To each his own rright
Conor ddoesn'tpreach in songs (save one ok back off) he isn't on commercials telling you how to live your life. But he is an entertainer and he does have a forum for his voice to be heard and when the reasoning is right (this administration sucks) then more power to him for stating it. He earned that right, you dont have to listen you dont have to like it. Im assuming most people at that show knew what he meant and im sure Conor knew they would.
If there is a single person on here who hasn't once been in their home town and though "I hate this damn place" then i dont believe you. Watch I'll do it now "I wish to leave long island for a long time, im currently in CT for college and i'll never step foot in this state again." See what I mean? Yah he was a bit more vulgar about it but lighten up people. Ignore how he says things and listen to what he says.

But it doesn't make it ok...even if "everyone" does a show or two intoxicated thats still cheating people out of what they paid for. If "everyone" started doing shows drunk all the time they would turn into Creed. It's fine for people who weren't there to take this whatever way they may, but I would feel awkward and a little bit cheated if I was at a show and I was watching an artist who was obviously drunk.

Also, this is a Bright Eyes related thread.
jason's point was that adam lazzara has had several incidents involving being way too drunk at a show and then pretty much ruining the show. and you're sitting there completely against getting drunk during a show. so it's just kind of ironic.

what is ironic about this comment is how you are accusing him of making unnecessary comments about a state while bashing nebraska at the same time. if conor made the comments you did while on stage there would be an uproar, but you didn't think anything about saying them. that is the whole point, if it were anyone else besides him making a sarcastic comment while drunk it would be okay. granted, being on stage while in texas might not have been the best time, but if it's what he is thinking i think he should go ahead and say it.
about the whole being drunk on stage deal: i expect that at a bright eyes show. so the kid likes to drink, thats not my problem. if the show falls apart because of, it i might be upset, but as long as the music keeps coming and no one in the band passes out i dont really mind. when i saw him he was tipsy, of course, and even fell down, but i didnt hold it against him.
regarding his "no singing" policy: if i were him i might do the same thing. seeing him live is a great experience, but the fans are just out of control. the things they yell are just uncalled for and immature, and if i were him i would get totally fed up with it. also, if you're an introverted person to begin with who doesn't want to be constantly held up on this golden pedestal and pratically worshiped, you might react the same way. i was getitng tired of the fans at the show and i don't have to deal with that every night like he must.
i'm not agreeing with what he said, i just don't think it should cause such an uproar.

I'd figured I'd chime in, since I haven't in 7 pages. Of course, people are entitled to their opinions on things, but I think an opinion is 100% worthless and disregarded if it's not expressed in a tactful and/or respectful way. Regardless of what angle you look at it from, Conor did not do it in a respectful way at all, and he did it with words that are meant to hurt and piss people off. I agree, freedom of speech is a great thing and making comments such as Conor did won't land him in prison, but it will land him dead in a ditch off of a Texas highway. Of course the first ammendment could allow people to say generally anything they want, but it doesnt mean other people can't counter express what you have to say or get really upset and pissed off with it. Conor was downright wrong for expressing his opinion in the manner he did. People look up to him, and in essence pay his bills, he should atleast have the courtesy to say what he believes in a professional and respectful manner. Period.

Disagree. People should refrain from being crybabies when someone says something they don't like. Or at least back it up with anything (stats showing Texans do in fact not rape Indians, and never did) besides a comment of, "I don't like it .."
Interestingly enough one man's opinions only take on this high horse "greater meaning" when everyone here goes on and on about it for 8 pages - the continued discussion only showcases his words.

Then the same argument could be made for my view on the situation... Conor should back up his comments by showing evidence that Texans do in fact rape Indians and always have, besides simply stating it without evidence. I think if you're going to showcase your opinion to hundreds of people at a venue, you should atleast have the courtesy to do it in a respectful way, it's really not asking much. I do agree, people shouldn't be crybabies over things, but some words and actions should be off limits, regardless. Hence why words and remarks such as ******, ***got, and ***** aren't condoned on this site, because although it's freedom of speech, it can still hurt and piss people off. If things of that nature aren't condoned on a website forum, I don't see why they should be condoned on stage in front of a group of 800 people idolize and look up to you.

haha ahh me too. this is why i can't wait for the this summer when all my friends will be back, and after that finishing up my last year at community college which sucks more than i could have ever imagined. what sucks even more is i could be visiting my friend who has a huge dorm room all to herself this weekend...right now actually...like my other good friends from high school are but couldn't because of a death in the family. not to make it sound like the death is no big deal because it's a huge deal and i've been a mess this past week over it but...why i'm posting about this, here especially, i don't know.

Ok. It's been established that Conor Oberst doesn't like George Bush, or the ideals that he stands for. You'd think he'd be more pro-tolerance and accepting of those that are not like him based on that. However, he goes out of his way to make it known that he vehemently dislikes all of those that don't agree with his viewpoints. I saw this tour at its kickoff in Omaha, and he made it a point to make sure everyone knew that he thought if anyone was Pro-Bush, that they were full of shit.
Also, it's terrible how it's become "acceptable" to some to bash Texas/the south/that breed of people. Had he said "I hate black people, don't steal my stereo" or some other stupid stereotype, he'd have been universally branded a bigot on the spot. Instead, he spouts off some stupid stereotype that's "accepted", and some people applaud it. Fucking ridiculous.
Fuck this hypocrite. He's never getting a cent of my money again.

02/11/05, 07:24 PM

Once you achieve any sort of fame outside an internet music forum then you can talk shit. He can say or do whatever he wants, and he did. Its his show. If you don't like it dont fucking go.
If you went and were pissed off at the performance dont go again. Just don't fucking sit here and act like you can preach because you don't like what he said. I don't like what you say. You don't like what I say. Get over it.
And to the idiot who said he should go to France: a die-hard "patriot" like yourself should recognize that Conor being able to talk shit about Texas/America is one of the tenets this country was founded on. So if YOU don't like what he has to say, then voice your opinion and let him voice is.

Way too lazy to read all these replies. Bright Eyes hates Bush and he's allowed to say it whenever and wherever he wants. Some people hate it...but judging by his popularity most people don't give a shit. I couldn't care either way, I have my own opinion and I'd have to get into a little more depth with Bright Eyes about the president if I was to alter my opinion because of what he said. Bush, and Colin Powell are big deceivers and we're all victim's...it's okay though because Bush has done some good things for the country...so he can lie to us as long as the US doesn't suffer as a nation and I still get the medicare I deserve when I'm 65. I love politics just as much as I hate them...which is a lot. It's okay to ignore the millions of people being brutally slaughtered all over Africa...we have more important issues...like Iraq...right?
But seriously Bright Eyes if you can't say anything nice don't say anything at all. After all that's what I was taught in this goddamn country born on a heritage of free speech and the value of everyone's opinion. Is it really all that great when I feel helpless to change anything that's going on?

because austin is a town known for pretentious stuck up elitest pricks, much like conor oberst.
shows in austin, especially recently have been a fucking fashion show. the crowd for coheed and cambria/underoath was a fucking disgrace. the crowd for northstar/slr/SA was the same.
all of these new tours coming up (big ones) including underoath, falloutboy, epitaph, and take action have all decided to skip austin this time around. i wouldnt be surprised if it was because of the majority of the crowd being complete assholes.

Texas is actually a very charming, cultured place to live,
Austin aside, it's really not. Austin is not representative of Texas at all, and that's the reason why a lot of people like it. The rest of Texas is arguably the most non or single cultured region in the nation.
And for the charming bit...Are you kidding me?

Actually, Conor has more audacity than most musicians who'll just play a set without any interaction.
So you would just rather hear some guy that seems like so many people on here are in love with make up things like raping Indians cuz you think thats cool or cuz you think thats better then not talking? It is a lot better to interact with the crowd but bad interaction isnt. I just think its funny cuz if he said that in the streets to half of the people in Texas his ass would be beat so bad. He just says it on stage so that all the security guards can protect him

yea, while id like to read all of these, i simply dont have the patience. im going to take for granted that lots of people have been pissed, but that even more have supported him. id just like mr oberst to really visit texas. maybe he has, but im also taking for granted that hes just passed through on tours. texas has many great cities like dallas, austin, houston, san antonio, etc, and not all of them meet the hick-ass texan mold. i realize that this statement may be long overdue, but it still is somewhat offensive. wicked burn mr oberst, but i just dont think you really understand what youre talking about.

If indeed Oberst was referring to all of Texas then I'm sure he is in fact stereotyping around the way Mr. Bush is which is lame, but in fact...I believe...when he refers to Texas he is referring to Mr. Bush. I don't like Texas personally and wouldn't want to live there (from the few times I've been there) but no place is perfect and I'm sure if we took the time we could all find plenty of good things about basically anything.

I just want to say that I seriously love Bright Eyes. Conor Oberst is clearly a lyrical genius, and I think anyone with a general sense of good music would agree. His comments were pretty harsh to say the least, but I mean we have to get over it. I've read a number of posts, but has anyone from that Texas show posted on this thread? I'm anxious to hear their point of view, and the points of view from the other Texans that attended the show that night. I'm a Bush fan, and you guys can ridicule me and make fun of me all you want. But anyways, I don't agree with many of Conor's beliefs, but despite my differences with him I have a lot of respect for him and what he does. I don't understand why some fans would turn away from him because of a couple stereotypical jokes. You just have to laugh at it and let it go. I'm sure Conor doesn't hate Texas as much as he said he did. I'm pretty positive that he doesn't not like our president very much and decided to take a stab at his state while he was in the area. It had nothing to do with the people there, it was just an opportunity to bash Bush. Conor's political views are expressed throughout his music, and you have to expect he is going to speak a little bit of his mind between his songs. That's what he is about. I could write for days about Bright Eyes and Conor Oberst, but I think I've said enough. I still would really like to see some of the Texans who witnessed this incident first hand speak up. I'm interested to know how they saw the entire situation. Alright you kids, I'm out of here.
