This Providence – The Bright Lights EP
Record Label: Fueled By Ramen
Release Date: October 14, 2008

Who?

Some of Seattle, Washington’s finest emo rockers with an affinity for peppy, faith-based jams and clever pop songwriting.

How is it?

Great, unless you listen beyond the first track. Blending upbeat pop and large vocals supported by rock-solid instrumentation, “Waste Myself” is vintage This Providence. Unfortunately, the band inexplicably decided to remake “My Beautiful Rescue,” one of the stronger tracks from 2006’s self-titled release. The result is slower, gaudier, and downright boring. In its previous incarnation, the song mixed acoustic and electric movements into a joyful two and a half minutes. The extra minute added to the “renovated” version is only a result of a dragging tempo and a muddy wash of bland synth-strings. The appropriately named “Hopeless” is, well, you get the idea. Vocalist Daniel Young mucks through the melodies with uncharacteristic laziness and the chorus lyrics (“Does it make you cold to know I’d never die for you”) do little to inspire. The EP concludes with “Sand in Your Shoes (acoustic),” an innocent and relatively run-of-the-mill acoustic ballad that showcases the upper end of Young’s vocal range rather nicely without actually accomplishing much else.

The Bright Lights EP offers a teaser in preparation for the next full-length offering from This Providence. Ardent fans may be satisfied, but all others should grab the first track and play the hell out of it until the next album surfaces.

I can't stand the new version of "My Beautiful Rescue" -- like you said, slow and boring.

You pretty much summed it up perfectly here -- first track is solid, the rest could have been left out.

I wonder if "Waste Myself" is going to be on the next full length?

Pretty much agree here; I thought hopeless was ok though.

Yeah, the remake of "Beautiful Rescue" was definitely a bad idea.

The remake of "My Beautiful Rescue" stemmed from FBR asking the band to re-record a track from their S/T album to add more songs (aka "filler") to the EP.

I always thought the original "My Beautiful Rescue" seemed a little under-done, compared to the rest of their S/T. But it's a solid song, either way.

Wow 'My Beautiful Rescue' sounds terrible

I still have faith they'll put out a solid album.

I miss their old music. Saw them live twice this week, one headlining show and one support for the Reliant K tour and I'm not a big fan of the new stuff, and they don't seem happy playing it. At their headlining show they played both versions of "My Beautiful Rescue" by request from the whole crowd. I just wish they would play some stuff off Our Worlds Divorce but I doubt they ever will. As long as they keep playing stuff off the S/T I will be satisfied.

waste myself is a great song. i haven't been paying much attention to these guys for a while, but i'm drawn back in, looking forward to the next release. i like the redone song as well, the change from minor to major in the chorus was a nice touch, and it suits the original vocal melody well.

EP was so disappointing. Even the first track.

What in the world happened to this band?

Sir, your review was highly amusing.

I will listen to Waste Myself and Waste Myself only. The new My Beautiful Rescue just sounds weird to me, but I completely loved that song on the S/T, so I'm a bit biased.

I actually think the re done "my beautiful rescue" points out their songwriting capabilities. The music is straightforward and emphasizes the well thought out lead vocals on top of it. I like it a lot. It almost sounds like it could be a radio classic like Depeche Mode from the 80s.

I liked the remake but not nearly as much as the original song. The original song, and the first album (which didn't have my beautiful rescue on it) had a raw feel. That's what I loved. This one sounded too polished.
