Highway 61 Revisited with a very, very close A Love Supreme as second.

To me, Highway 61 seems light years ahead of Rubber Soul in terms of maturity, both musically and lyrically.

Hmmm. Probably Temptations - Temptin' Temptations.

Once again, we see how shallow my taste in music really is.

The Temptations Sing Smokey > Temptin' Temptations.

As an aside, I just picked up their collaborative album with The Supremes. Wonderful stuff.

You included the two best albums of the year, so, you know, there's that.

"Since I Lost My Baby", "The Girl's Alright With Me", "Girl, Why You Wanna Make Me Blue?", come on!

On Sings Smokey, they had Smokey Robinson (well, duh) producing and writing. They'd never sounded better and even had members of The Miracles (if I remember correctly) working on it. Temptin' Temptations is a good album, don't get me wrong, but I find Robinson's fingerprints on Sings Smokey made that album the superior release from them in '65.

"Don't Look Back" has to be one of my favorite Temptations songs of all time, so that could be it. It is a great album though.

Edit: Out of the ones on the poll though, I went with A Love Supreme. Definitely about to throw this on now.

1965-1969 was basically the absolute pinnacle of music. Nothing else has ever even come close to the quality of music released during those five years and never wiil.

A good two thirds of the top twenty records ever were recorded in those five years. If you could only ever listen to music made in that time you would not in the least bit be bored.

If I was forced to pick a year it would probably be 1966 (Blonde on Blonde, Pet Sounds, Revolver) but 1965 is still phenomenal.

For the poll I picked A Love Supreme, the greatest jazz record of all time over Highway 61 because I feel Dylan has better albums.
I agree about 1966 being the best and I want to do a thread on that later. As I think about it, it seems like Dylan was so far ahead of everyone else at this point in time, but do you still think that Blood on the Tracks is his only masterpiece?

I just love Rubber Soul and I have a sort of emotional connection to it.

I know this is a VERY unpopular opinion, but I feel Rubber Soul is their last album with no bad songs on it as the songwriting got more and more split up after that album.

No no Blonde on Blonde and Highway 61 are masterpieces too and Freewheelin and BIABH are classics as well but Blood on the Tracks is still no.1 by some way.

Alright, I just recall you saying something about that only being his only great album or what not, but I may be wrong.

Abbey Road and Sgt. Pepper both beat it out, but there's songs off each those albums I don't like.

A Love Supreme was 1964 wasn't it? Well, it's pretty frickin' good.

I'm in the minority that likes Help! more than Rubber Soul I guess, but both are amazing albums. And yeah, Dylan was great around this period.

But how about Turn! Turn! Turn! by The Byrds? Classic stuff.

A Love Supreme was released in 64 I believe. It would definitely be my choice if it's valid though. If not, I'll go with Highway 61 which isn't too shabby in its own right.

Blonde On Blonde and Bringing It All Back Home are also phenomenal.

although i like this little poll & hope discussion will ensue, why of all years did you pick '65? just curious mate

this would have been a tough choice between two albums, but if a love supreme doesn't count, i'll go with highway 61 revisited

but my actual favourite from '65 is probably the impression's people get ready. closely followed by wilson pickett - the exciting wilson pickett & then james brown - papa's got a brand new bag

some other treasures of the year (off the top of my head, couple might be the wrong date haha):
ella fitzgerald & duke ellington - ella at duke's place
otis redding - otis blue: otis redding sings soul
the who - my generation
booker t. & the m.g.'s - soul dressing
ray charles - country & western meets rhythm & blues
wilson pickett - in the midnight hour
jr. walker & the all stars - shotgun
martha & the vandellas - dance party
jackie wilson - soul time
aretha franklin - yeah!!!
marvin gaye - how sweet it is to be loved by you
the wailers - the wailing wailers
toots & the maytals - the sensational maytals
prince buster - it's burke's law
laurel aitkin - ska with laurel

I went with 61, followed by Coltrane, then BIABH.

Bringing it All Back Home is my favorite Dylan album.

The Who and Ella and Duke should have been in the poll.

I chose '65 because I've been on a huge Bob Dylan kick lately, which is nothing new for me, but I was looking at the timeline of his albums versus the Beatles and it surprised me how far ahead of him he seemed at this point in time and I was curious who else would agree. Apparently, most.

I'll have to look into those albums as I've never heard any of them except Otis Blue.

nice. i've been on big ella kicks lately. i only really got into her work because i'm a big duke & basie fan, both of which she has done numerous albums with. undoubtedly gorgeous voice

nah that's fair enough. i've always said dylan was ahead of the beatles & that without dylan i'm a little skeptical whether the beatles songbook would have reached their real potential (see your best albums of the 60's thread for our previous yarn on the matter haha). they went from writing nice little pop ditties to writing some great introspective & much deeper lyrical content at the influence of dylan, who really brought that element of songwriting to the forefront of popular music. but all the beatles fans here write me off as another attempt to bring their favourite band down, which is so far from my point haha

but yea a lot of great albums came out in '65. i also greatly enjoyed this era, but for different reasons than most here. i was mostly all about the funk, soul & of course... that gorgeous traditional ska explosion! but cool to hear you're keen to check some new stuff, never be afraid to check genres that aren't your usual jam, you never know what might take to you fancy given the chance. too many times ap is all about keeping ahead on the latest act/trend, forgetting there's already a world of wondrous tunes around them

As I've gotten more and more into Dylan, now reaching a state of near fanaticism, I agree with what you said completely. I actually went back and read that conversation and while I still agree that the Beatles had a cultural impact that Dylan never did, he meant so much more musically and especially lyrically.

Give me a rec or two for what you think I should listen to so I can expose myself to more genres and varieties and what not.

the beatles made some great music, but their cultural impact has (largely) always seemed to me as really being one of the first bands to bring the sound of rock music to the youth at the time. instead of music being a form of entertainment for the working class, it became more widely appealing (with a big help from many other bands from the era too). whereas dylan became more than an artist, he was an activist & the voice of modern politics & protest, the voice of a generation

it's interesting once you dig a little deeper into music & garner more of an, ongoing & never ending, understanding, just how much your view chances to all those that are widely accepted & flaunted around as "fact" haha

i'll see what me & my dial-up internet can do mate

Same, got into her through her work with Duke haha.

As for this Dylan/Beatles matter, Bob was way ahead in 1965. No contest really, when you stack a song of Like A Rolling Stone's magnitude up against...In My Life?

Rubber Soul is just a great, great guilty pleasure, really. 61 is obviously better, and I enjoy it more for some reason. They are completely different and I can see why some would choose it, but 61 is the obvious answer for me and one of my favorites.

It's the one I find myself revisiting more often. I've Just Seen A Face is one of my favorite beatles songs, it just barely scraped ahead of Dylan.
