Why didn't this formulaic poppunk get a 3.2?

haha, cuz it's better than Plain White T's?

Those are my dudes. I think they deserve more credit than a 5.8. I know what work and dedication went into that disc. If it sounds ripped off what ever its still good. I just hope people don't judge them off this review. And if you have take it back and listen to the cd when it comes out. I believe you will be impressed. Thanks

While I do agree that they put a lot into the disc, i think that Scott gave an honest review and its respectable.

He didnt say the disc was bad at all, he said if you like their kind of music youll love it but dont expect a brand new fashion show.

Lets not start ripping on him now.

If you liked it please preorder the cd from www.smartpunk.com

Thanks.

Oh yeah, totally. It's a fun CD, you can see that even though I gave it a 5.8 I still recommended it. I in no way would ever slight or disrespect how much effort a band puts into an album, and whenever an indie album gets a low score, people come out in the masses to rip on me for giving it a lower grade. It's all relative guys. I gave moments in grace a 7, the newest FSF a 7, those are great albums - I've been trying to get tougher with my reviews. You can't just take a bands first CD and give it a 9, where is there to go from there? Hit the Lights has enourmous potential and when a full length comes out, then we're probably looking in the 7-8 region for this band.

Just re-read the review and don't start accusing me of stuff like I don't pay attention to how hard they worked. I don't know that, I just have ears, and I have an opinion. That's why I'm a reviewer, I give it scores based on what I hear. A band could be the hardest working band in the world and make music like Creed - people need to recognize that talent does not always equal effort. Not that this is the case with Hit the Lights.

Whoa whoa whoa, I am cool with people having opinions and stuff but it seems like you were implying that Creed is not good. I'm pretty sure it's been scientifically proven by scientists that Creed is awesome. Sometimes I imagine I was named after Scott Stapp.

I agree 100% with you Scott. I actually get tired of seeing every good album getting an 8 or 9. Nothing is wrong with a 5.8, it just means its a solid release but don't expect to be playing it over and over for the next 10 years.

hit the lights is an amazing band, and i must agree that even though they are extremely hard working individuals, the cd is formulaic and can be compared to every other band out there. that's the case with most bands first releases.....everyone has their influences and hopefully grow from them. watch for this band to blow up in about a year and a reviewer saying some new band is ripping of HTL.

As much as everyone on here dislikes Creed, they obviously did something right with how many albums they sold.

Yeah, seriously, this is a good CD people, don't be discouraged by a 5.8, it just means I don't know the lasting value of it. Like the other guy said, Hit the Light's next CD could end up being really big! They certainly show a lot of promise in this EP.

Wake up scorcho, different people like different music. I may like alot of bands you think suck, so that automatically makes me one who listens to crap? No it doesn't, it just shows I have different tastes than you do. So I apologize for not being a scenester like you, from now on I say all music is crap. Yay crappy music!!!

I'm not here to rip on anybody either, but I think this review is a little biased. I received this cd early from a friend and have been listening to it ever since. As a person who also reviews different artists I can definatly see the immediate comparison to Fall Out Boy, but, I think Chris might have let that ruin the EP for him. There's a lot more to this disk than just a band that sounds like Fall Out Boy and I think that this disk probably should have been reviewed by someone more open to that. This band has serious potential and takes this particular style, in my opinion, a little better than Fall Out Boy. This EP has huge choruses, seriously catchy hooks, and the potential to be HUGE. These are just opinions of different people I understand, but you can definatly expect much better reviews from other sites I can assure you of that. It also doesn't help when the reviewer asks people what he thinks of the pros and cons just so they can giggle with him about his wit. A bit tasteless. Anyway, just watch, this band will prove themselves just the same I'm quite sure.

I don't understand how it's biased. I listened to it at least 5 times before reviewing it, it's a solid EP, i dig it. You just stated lines that are virtually straight out of my review. Let me point out a few things to you from the review...

"The drum fills, the stop and go breakdowns, the strumming patterns…it’s all very familiar. Yet I can’t say that the result was anything I didn’t enjoy. Hit the Lights don’t pretend to be anything they’re not – they play melodic, formulaic pop-punk, and they do it well."

"This EP is 5 songs of infectious pop-punk that is decently produced and is full of talent"

"It’s a good listen and the songs are catchy, but it’s virtually impossible to not draw comparisons to other similar bands. Silent Movie Records has a stone on their hands that with a little refining could become a gem."
So yes, they do have potential. Everybody close to the band is attacking me as a reviewer, when I've been talking to Joe from Silent Movie and he thinks it's a great review. A number is just a number, guys. Just because it's 5.8 doesn't mean it's hawthorne heights. I would say your interpretation of the review is much more biased than my actual review itself because I know nothing about this band, I listened to it without knowing anything about them. Don't you think your previous knowledge about them would make your opinion and critique more biased than mine? Just a thought.

By the way, my name's Scott, not Chris. And the fact that it sounds like Fall Out Boy doesn't ruin it in the least for me, in fact it's part of what kept me listening to it. I'm listening to it again right now, it's good stuff.

Maybe a 5.8 comes across as too harsh. It's just a number, I like the CD, the idea is just that it's nothing new, but it's still solid. I guess my enjoyment level maybe exceeds 5.8, so after further listen I'm going to bump it to a 6.5. I do this a lot with Cds I review, the day after score edit. It's hard to pick a score on a CD in an exact moment in time, and the resulting thoughts about it sometimes create what I'll call "post-review dissonance". 6.5, there you go. It is really good pop-punk, and I really can't stop listening. I know it'll fade, but in comparison to other stuff I've done, it's not fair to begin my "tougher grading" on a CD like this.

the difference between HTL and FOB is that HTL actually sounds as good live as they do on CD.

dude. I think your score is justifiable. I've heard this CD in its entirety. Its an extremely fun cd but its not really anything new. If you give EVERYTHING either great scores or bad scores that just makes the scores meaningless. You need to be tough and honest or you dont have any buisness writing reviews.

Its your review. Its what you think. If other people dont like it, they can write their own reviews on their own websites.
