Appreciate how these two movies are so well done.

Two of my favorite movies ever. Still crossing my fingers for another one some day. Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy do an amazing job of captivating you when all they're really doing is walking around a city and talking. These were the movies that really made me love Richard Linklater. He's a great writer.

I agree, I know we're both regulars in the writer's thread, you more than me but, these movies seriously focused on the dialogues of the two characters more than anything. so good and well written. although an average movie go-er would think it's too much dialogue and boring, but they really need to appreciate the writing more than anything

Well the first is basically about Jesse (Ethan Hawke) who meets Celine (Julie Delpy) on a train as he's traveling through Europe. They connect immediately and have a great conversation but unfortunately Jesse has to get off at the next stop. Jesse tells Celine he has a crazy idea in that he thinks she should come with him so they can continue talking as they just wander around Vienna. That's pretty much what takes place throughout the duration of Before Sunrise. They wander around Vienna talking about the deepest moments and thoughts they have all before sunrise when Jesse has to leave on the next train. They make a romantic bond that reaches the level of soul mates. Before Sunset is about what happens afterwards...but I don't want to give away too much of that one because if you end up enjoying Sunrise, you'll likely want to jump right into Sunset and it'll be better if you're not spoiled.

Absolutely. The writing is so fascinating, everything they're talking about is so engrossing, that you practically don't even realize the entire movie is nothing but a couple people talking. I always feel like I've just come away from a wonderful visit with some old friends whenever I watch these again. I love showing these movies to people who have never seen it. I'm always hoping they won't get bored and will watch closely because it's so worth it.

These are the kind of screenplays that I wish I could write being that I want to be a screenwriter/director when I'm older. It's just such little action but so much emotion in the characters that captivate the audience with a good story, making a good story a better movie.

Hey guys, I don't know if you like to watch through YouTube but....if you click this link:

You can watch part one of Before Sunrise there and then follow the links for the rest of the movie under the "Related Videos" section because somebody put the entire movie up on YouTube.

Me too. I love talky movies like this that have so much to say. It drives me crazy because my current screenwriting professor hates dialogue and "artsy" movies so he's very limiting in what he allows us to write...

Hm, I've never taken a screenwriting class but I have written my own screenplays as well as directing classes. I don't know if I should take any or just be self taught for writing, but for directing, I'd take like a beginners class that teaches what every director should know.

Part of me kind of wishes I'd done those things now. I think my production classes were worth it because I admittedly learned a lot of technical stuff I didn't know, but the more I've been thinking about being in a class for screenwriting..... the more it seems absurd. Perhaps that's blasphemy to some people but it's just...odd. There are so many reasons it bothers me and one of them would be what I mentioned before, but another reason would be that I sometimes feel like I don't need or want it. There's this part of me deep inside that wants to tell my professor to shove off and knows you can be self taught. Unfortunately now I'm very close to graduating and this is one of the classes I must take to finish my degree. If you really want my advice (maybe look up professors at your school of choice and see what people have to say about them first if you change your mind) then I would say teach yourself and just take a couple production courses for directing. I just feel like professors in the communications department who teach screenwriting can be rather prickish....for some reason...

Hmm, interesting, no offense but I feel the professors teaching screenwriting are failures when they tried to be one so they are just natural assholes to students pursuing in that direction as well.
Production class is probably what I'll take at the Academy of Art this summer or something, maybe an expensive class at UCLA, USC, NYU (my top choices for film school) to look good on my portfolio but shit, the only things I worry about when I'm filming something is
1. a steady shot (steadicam's are pretty expensive, but my DIY is fine haha)
2. DOF
3. sound
4. lighting

YES. Haha, I didn't want to come right out and say it but that's exactly what I'm left thinking every single class period. My professor (his name is Joel) loves to bring up the fact that he went to school and had class with Spike Lee at NYU. He brings it up all the time. I'm always sitting there wanting to say, "well now that's interesting because why just the other day I was browsing through the film section at Barnes & Noble and stumbled upon the Spike Lee joint collection of his best films. So uh...where's your collection professor?"
The man drives me absolutely insane. He tears everything apart, spends hours (the class is four hours long) talking about either absolutely nothing or about what kinds of movies he hates, and is always quick to pump up his own ego whilst bashing yours. The guy is full of shit is what I'm essentially getting at. So yeah, I'd say you're pretty much dead on in your assessment there. There is one guy who wrote a very famous book about screenwriting called "Story" and his name is Robert McKee. From what I understand, I'm pretty sure he teaches at NYU and supposedly he's wonderful and everyone loves his class. He's also actually been involved with famous films so he's already a step ahead of others. Try looking him up if you like.
After I'm done here, I'm going to the New York Film Academy for their summer program to get more experience. Right now I'm filming a documentary and hoping to submit it to festivals around here. I also know they're setting up a nifty new film studio here called Elmwood so I'm hoping it opens up a lot of low level entry jobs that may allow me to work my way up so that I can get experience, save money, and get the hell out of this dying state.
Also, I see you've mentioned a steadicam. Have you ever been to this website?:

This guy made a $14 steadicam that actually works quite well. I bought one and I use it often. He's got videos of himself filming with it on the website.

I'll definitely check that book out, I need to read some of those film books, but I sorta want to steer away from those... knowing that a million others will know the same thing.
Is that all ages? I really need some college credits, my dream would be to go there or UCLA, USC. Most likely UCLA cause my family wouldn't be able to afford those Universities.
I'd love to know more about your documentry, I'm working on a short right now that I plan to film soon, maybe we can discuss our ideas :-)

I feel you on that. From what I understand, McKee's "Story" is one of the most frequently read books on screenwriting out there. I have it myself and have been leafing through it as the semester wears on. It's not bad. He's got some useful pointers and tips even if some of it bugs me. I don't know, maybe find it at a bookstore and flip through it to see how you feel about it. I wouldn't say it's an absolute must even though my professor says "every writer in the industry quotes him." Could just be my professor still talking out of his ass. He does seem fairly legit though when you look at his website:
http://www.mckeestory.com/homepage.html
Also, it seems that he doesn't teach so much as give lengthy seminars nowadays. It looks like you don't have to have any kind of school credentials to get into a seminar. I'd actually be kind of interested in going to one now that I'm looking at it.
I'd love to know more about your documentry, I'm working on a short right now that I plan to film soon, maybe we can discuss our ideas :-)
That sounds great. :-) My documentary is about a local township around here which is fighting and attempting to sue their government for violating the Open Meetings Act and secretly signing an agreement with a development firm to tear apart a large plot of land and turn it into a massive strip mall. The controversy has been going on and evolving for the better part of a year. The issue started when this development firm secretly sent in citizens from another city to live on the township's abandoned property for five months in mobile homes. After those five months passed, the township police discovered the squatters but due to a city ordinance, they realized they could not force them out. The ordinance states that if a person or group of people inhabits a section of land in another city or town for a certain period of time, those people automatically become citizens of that city or town. This gave the development firm the ability to have these people vote to annex this large plot of land to their original home city. If this happened, the firm could then turn the land into this giant mall against the wishes of the people of the township. Well, the township sued the firm and a decision was made to allow the city the land could be annexed to, to vote on whether or not this should happen. During all of this, the mayor of that city was sending out fliers and false advertisements stating that the land would open up more jobs and give money back to the community when in reality just the opposite would take place. Even the former mayor of that city went before the city council and blasted the idea, stating that it was immoral, all about money, and just plain wrong. He was gaveled off the stand by the judge. A video of this was placed on YouTube. Just a few weeks later, that video disappeared, replaced by a message stating that the video was removed at the request of "city officials." Those officials included the new mayor himself. So the city ultimately were good neighbors to the township and voted no on annexation, however it was later discovered that the township's board of trustees had illegally carried out a secret meeting, violating the Open Meetings Act which states that citizens must be informed of all meetings and of the agneda of each meeting. This meeting was secretly called by the board to give the land over to the development firm no matter what happened with the vote from the neighboring city before that city could even vote on the issue. So the citizens of the township ended up screwed no matter what. What's worse, the citizens discovered that this deal that was struck between the board and the development firm had drastically changed from the original plans for what would happen to that section of land. The original plan called for 8.7 acres of nature preserve, 6.0 acres wetland, 12.0 acres woodlot #1, 13 acres of woodlot #2, 42.4 acres of developed community open space, 19.3 acres for school, and 6.5 miles of trails. 121.4 total acres. The new deal completely nixed all of this. Another issue is the matter of land size this development firm is attempting to renovate. The square footage they want to develop is roughly 1,900,000 sq. ft. of land. This is bigger than one of the largest malls in our state which comes out to only 1,490,000 sq. ft. All in all, this is turning into a very big deal as the issue progresses. A group of citizens, called CPARD, formed in order to fight back and sue the board. I have connected with their leader and will be filming with him and his group. He has informed me that the issue goes much deeper than even I may know and that he can try to get me in with some interesting people. From what he has told me, even the governor of the state has her hand in the pot. I am going to a CPARD meeting this Tuesday where the township board and the development firm will be sending in shills to try and cause a debate amongst citizens. Hopefully I can get some good stuff there. I'm crossing my fingers big time on this project.

One of my favorite movie quotes came from Before Sunset...I even used it in a blog:
Jesse (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000160/): I feel like if someone were to touch me, I'd dissolve into molecules.
Followed by:
Celine (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000365/): So, I want to try something.
Jesse (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000160/): What?
Celine (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000365/): [hugs him] I want to see if you stay together or if you dissolve into molecules.
Jesse (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000160/): How'm I doing?
Celine (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000365/): Still here.
Jesse (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000160/): Good, I like being here.

Ha, yeah, now that you mention it, he's actually the guy the movie was loosely based on. My professor, who is oh so near and dear to my heart, mentioned that a couple weeks ago and I forgot about that. Good call.
And yeah, it is quite a mouthful, haha. The situation has just gotten worse and worse as time has progressed. When it started out it was really just about the township versus this development firm before it launched into this crazy "conspiracy" type situation. A few months ago, before the city voted on the land in the neighboring township, a citizen of the township began a resistance group in order to rally against voting yes on the annexation. She wanted to inform the neighboring city of what was really going on. Just last week however, this very same woman printed an article in the local newspaper stating that it was "time for everyone to move on" and that this deal with the development firm is a "good thing." Her attitude seemed like a completely bizarre one-eighty from what her original stance was. Turns out...she's recently been nominated as a candidate for the township board...the very board that has been accused of breaking a law...yeah...
Also, the city mayor who was passing out those false fliers had been printing out a phone number on every flier, stating that you could call the number for more information. Only problem was, if you actually took the time to call the number located at the bottom of the flier in tiny print, you reached a law firm. This law firm was clearly annoyed and stated they had nothing to do with the whole issue and had no clue why their number was placed on those fliers...

I really want to. This is a story that has gone on around me for quite a while now and people still don't know the whole story. I would love to relate it to people nationally, to get them to dig and ask what their own local governments may be up to. Thank you for your encouragement and wishes for luck. I'm definitely going to need them. I'm only allowed to make a twenty to thirty minute documentary this semester but I'm going to film as much footage as absolutely possible and carry it on to create a larger project on my own.
One of the most interesting pieces of the puzzle is this mysterious little audio clip that has surfaced. CPARD demanded the clip be handed over and legally it had to be. The clip has to do with the township board and from what I've been told, it seems the audio appears to have been tampered with. Specific portions of information seem to have been "Nixonized" and are just wiped out. The guy running CPARD asked me if I know anyone who is an audio engineer and luckily I have an audio engineer professor whose been working in the audio field for over forty years. He's actually a decent human being unlike my editing and screenwriting professor and he's said that he'd love to have a look at the clip. I hope something comes of that too because that would really be a powerful section to the film.

Just watched Sunrise, will do Sunset tomorrow. Really enjoyed the first one.
Side note: it's funny to read my posts in here from a couple years back

Really really wish I owned these. It's been a shitty few months and these movies would do the trick.

Two of my favorite films of all-time. I consider Before Sunset to be the best film of the decade.

One of my favorites too. I feel elated after watching either one, although I do prefer the sequel.

Yeah the sequel's much better. Better written, and Hawke and Delpy really grew as actors in that time. I'd love to see them do another one in a couple years.

Okay, reading this thread has inspired me to watch these tonight. They've been sitting on my shelves for almost two years haha.
Also, what would the third one be called? Before mid-afternoon?

I dunno, it doesn't have to keep going necessarily like this. The second was originally going to be called Before Sunrise 2. How about Before Midnight, or something like that?

Honestly, I'd love to see Linklater/Hawke/Delpy keep exploring these characters every ten years or so.

Eh, I hope not. Just close it off with one more film.
Then it would be my favorite trilogy.
