Blink182 (http://www.blink182.com) has announced they are going on an "indefinite hiatus." They were, and are, the reason I started this website and even started listening to music in the first place. I'm sorry I couldn't post this earlier in the weekend, but I think it's obvious why; as the band was still making their final decision.

Travis was too ghetto for Tom and Mark.
Tom was too emo for Travis and Mark.
Mark just looked too old and curmudggeon-y.
But, all joking aside, they will be missed. It will be weird to not see a Blink CD out two years from now.

I don't blame them. Now they have time to enjoy their success. I'm sure they will get bored and then start making more music, I know I eventually would.

I guess this news was coming for a while but... I know a lot of people dislike them for whatever reason but they are the reason I got into all the music I like today. They opened up the way for me to explore different types of music way back when..
It's a tearjerker

this fucking sucks... honestly i feel like ive been kicked in the nuts. This band is the reason why im into this kinda music and as theyve evolved as a band, ive grown as a person. I dunno maybe this is a sign that its time to enter a new stage of my life or maybe they are just a band. naw fuck that they are so much more than just a band for me and im sure lots of other people. its a sad day...a really sad day....Fuck Mark Hoppus is the reason i picked up a bass... Im sorry if this doesnt make much sense but this honestly comes as a shock to me and ya im gonna go put on Chesire Cat and remember the good times

they could spend the rest of their lives counting the money they've made. but all joking aside I agree this band is what got me into the music I listen to today. Even though my taste has changed, they'd have to be responsible for steering it in the right direction. So this means a NEW box car racer CD AND TOUR RIGHT!?!?!?!?!?

i think they'll be back in time...but this made me remember the first time i heard dude ranch...i'd be someone else if i never had
Yah, exactly.
If this holds up it strikes a huge blow for me in the musical spectrum of the world too. I never thought I could get so choked up about the possibility of a band who for a large majority of their career fueled their medium with sodomy and poo poo jokes. While some people found them to be annoying for this reason i found it to be a very endearing quality to a band that obviously was still having fun past the age that society commonly accepts as acceptable. If I have learned one thing from these guys as a sort of message inspired by their actions it would be that you shouldn't take life so seriously all the time.
I know tons of people think they creatively peaked at "Dude Ranch" or even earlier. I disagree on this but to each their own. I think there is the stigma in the fans of alot of bands that unfairly shuts out their favorite groups the day they get some MTV airplay and people start hearing of them. Totally unfair most of the time but there are people who wanna make it a point that they "heard a band first" and "now that my 14 year old sister Suzy likes them it is lame for me to like them."
I feel like they were just starting to hit their stride with their self titled effort. They continued to imporve record by record in my opinion and had total matured as artists and began to try out things to branch out their musical identity. I do listen to a few other artist that I think have done this but along with Silverchair they just blow me away with release to release improvement. I think both groups released their best albums before their respective hiatuses.
I dont really know much about the rumors surrounding whatever led to this "hiatus" but I hope they can be resolved sometime soon.

Hmm, sucks.
There's one side of me that thinks "they suck" then there's another side that says "some of their stuff was ok". I can't say that I was their biggest fan, hell I wouldn't even say I was one, but I did kinda like some of their older stuff.
Kinda wish I'd gone to see them before, but DCFC dropped out of the support slot and I couldn't be arsed so I sold my ticket, haha.

This really sucks. Dude Ranch changed my whole music listening perspective. Blink182 was my favorite band for a long time(until I heard NFG's self-titled), and I wish I would have made more of an effort to see them live, even if some of their album efforts weren't up to par their live show still kicked major ass.
Bummer man.

I'll be happy if they atleast put out one more album. The last one was a step in a good direction and Id really hate to see them end it there. And yes, theyre the reason I listen to music today as well.

I would've happened eventually but I didn't expect it so soon. This has been a pretty crappy week in entertainment. Whatever happened to that book Mark was writing anyway?
i agree with those who said that they would be a different person if they had never heard dude ranch. that album changed my whole perspective on life at that time. who knows where i'd be or what i'd be listening to. maybe i'd be posting at absolutegangstarap.net. who knows. but we can all be sure that this isnt the last we'll be seeing of any of them. too talented to just let it go. if i were them i'd want some time off to enjoy my earnings as well.

i really hope this isn't the end. dude ranch was one of the first cds that i bought, and i still listen to it. a sad day indeed.
Aw. It's heartbreaking putting a lid on Blink!
I'm no big Blink fan. But I do enjoy them. And I'm sure alot of the stuff I listen to was influenced by Blink in some way. They also make me smile. I hope everything is resolved, and that you Blink fans don't end up with an acheing heart.
Horrible news. Enema of the State is what got me into music, and is the first cd I have ever heard (besides Green Day's Dookie) and owned. I remember in 5th grade, everyone singing "All The Small Things" in the back of the bus on the way to a field trip. :(
Ahhhhhhhhh RIP Blink you guys better come back eventually!

Ouch! This feels like a punch in my stomach... Seriously, I remember the exact moment when I first heard Cheschire Cat 10 years ago, and it definitely changed my life. I also remember the first time I saw these guys live... They were playing in a gymnasium in front of, like 300 people... My god I'm old... Anyway, this brings out a lot of emotions, because they've been a great part of the soundtrack of my life for the last decade, and I don't quite know what to say... I will miss them so much, and I hope we'll hear about them again soon, wether it be as Blink or anything else... They have a lot of talent and some of the greatest attitudes in the music world... It sounds cheesy as hell considering everyone is saying the same thing, but their way of never taking themselves too seriously has influenced my worldview a LOT. And they taught me that you don't have to grow old when growing up, which is something I really believe in. Anyway: Blink, we love you, we'll miss you and we hope to see you soon! Good luck, you deserve everything!

R.I.P. Blink 182
In my teenage life, Blink 182 got me through A LOT of hard times. Their anti-parental, teen love and frustration songs got me through a lot of days. Although I laugh at that time of my life now, I am so thankful for what Blink have done for me, and many others as well. I also really was excited for this new mature style of music they were starting to make. It seemed their music was maturing at the same rate that i was growing up, so I was always able to relate to them. They literally are the reason I own a guitar and drum set. I don't see why people were so angry with them, they were just doing what they loved. Like them or not, you have to respect them. They are now a huge influence into the upcoming bands. On a happier note, I am looking forward to what these guys are going to do on their own. I know Mark wants to get into producing, for example his work on the new Motion City Soundtrack album. We all know Travis is involved with a lot of other musicians. I'm not sure what Tom will be up to, but you know he's not just going to leave music. These guys have families now, and finally can spend time with them. Thank you Blink 182!

Wow, this is just fn awful news. I really loved this band so much. I mean they totally deserve to have this time off, but god Im gonna miss them. I have a feeling there was maybe a falling out between someone though seeing as how that last show they had was canceled suddenly and now this. I too am one of the people who picked up Dude Ranch and totally fell in love with it. And to this day I still love that album along with their others.

This really sucks. Like so many other people who have posted, Dude Ranch changed my life a lot. I remember the first time I saw Dammit on The Box, and I ran out and bought the cd the next day. I remember hearing Pathetic and just thinking "Holy shit, this is incredible," and then finding out everything I could about them online and tracking down Cheshire Cat as well to buy. Everytime they put out a CD it seemed like they had matured, and so had I. It was a cool feeling to have a band like that grow with you. So now I'm going to put in Dude Ranch and cry some emo tears for a while.

Yeah I've been listening to Blink since I was in fifth grade wen E.O.T.S came out. They've always kicked ass and I hope some day they return. I agree they need a break, but this just doesn't seem like a regular break. Things had to be pretty sketchy to pull out of a Tsunami benefit show..if it was a mutual break they would have at least pushed through one more show. Anyways, yeah, I'll miss them.

I could never envision a day where blink no longer existed, they just seemed like one of those bands that woudl never stop.
I wish them all the best and hope that they atleast continue to still make music..Its good that they can enjoy their money though.
I dotn think this is the last of them and hope to one day here a new blink cd or see them tour... but for now, Good bye blink you will be greatly missed.

FUCK this is the worst news in years. Tom Delonge was like a God in the music world to me.
This is the worst news I have heard this year. My favourite band ever r.i.p.
But I do take solace in the fact I got to see them play live in the U.K, I'm rocking my blink shirt tomorrow.
aww. i quite liked them too, they defined an era. in a way.
these guys are responsible for where i am today in regards to my tastes in music. they've been my favorite band since i got enema of the state when i was 16. they were the first live show i've ever been to and i was even lucky enough once to see them from right under the stage (something i've become way too accustomed to with the smaller bands i listen to today). they also hold the distinction of having the first album i've ever listened to straight through and loved every song. it was this experience that propelled me to seek out other bands that got me excited the way blink did (something no other band i've discovered through radio or mtv since has been able to do). the thing is, their last album took 9 months to record and an additional year and a half to promote and tour for, meaning they're left with three options: 1) make music they don't care about quickly, 2) make music they were happy with slowly and miss their kids' childhoods, or 3) get out of the game now while they're on top. i'm sure this won't be the last we hear from the guys as individuals. it might not be the same, but think of it this way. "imagine", the best song Lennon ever wrote came after the beatles were through. i wish them the best in whatever they hope to do in the future and thank them for the inspiring, catchy, and above all else FUN music they've have given me.

they'll be back for sure.
think about...
All of them (I think) are Dads now. I'm sure they want to see their kids grow up a bit
The Transplants are gearing up for Warped Tour this summer.
I'm sure they would like to write music with their other bands, direct videos, produce albums, and do all the sorts of things they couldn't.
Being in Blink was probably not fun for them now, and after a break from it I'm willing to bet they will be back...

Blink 182 is the reason I am who I am today. I know its being said alot on this board today, but that doesnt make it less true. They are a remarkable band, to me one of the greatest, but when I first read that they are going on hiatus I read it as a break, then I went to mtv.com and this site then to billboard.com I realized how serious this situation is. I hope that this isnt the end of blink just the end of a chapter ina blinks long career. I am a fan of evry single one of blinks records and to me they seem to have gotten better and better. when there untitled one came out it blew my mind I am still listening to it non stop..that is freakin increadible, it has yet to get old. But yeah, I first saw blink on trl(im so ashamed) when they premierd whats my age again. That day changed my life forever, from then on I stoped listening to rap, and changed my stlye of clothes and the way I talked and I became the person I am to day. I am extremly happy with who I am aposed to awhat I use to be a loser kid whos was just trying to be like every bpody else instead of being happy with the fact that im part of a much larger group of misfits.

blink was the first punk band that I listened to and I have always considered them my favorite band because of how they mixed great songs with comedy. If this is the end, I will be sad but grateful that I discovered them as well as all punk music.
I was sa when I listened to their newest cd and there was no humor and i realized that they were finally maturing and getting away from the potty humor. When I heard the news about this hiatus I was on the brink of tears because I knew that I might never hear a new song or anticipating a CD from my favorite band of all time.
I think that their last single, "Always" is significant, because if they do break up, the will always be condisered many people's favorite band of all time.

I know I posted already, but I really am having an issue dealing with this news. Which kind of surprised me, I mean Blink182 is just a band right? I just think back to the times listening to Dude Ranch and how it helped me get through my freshman year in high school. Dude Ranch really shaped who I am as a person today.
Anyway, I know this kind of sounds cheesy and lame, but I was thinking maybe we the fans could do something huge as a group as kind of a thank you to Blink for all the years of music they have provided us. I am not really sure what, but I want them to know that the fans care in a way different than just buying thier CDs and T-shirts or going to see them live. I am not sure what I am getting at, but maybe some of you guys have ideas.

This is a big upset, as I never got to go see one of their shows. Something went wrong every time they came to town. I wish them the best and I'm crossing my fingers it's not permanent.
i am completely shocked. even though a lot of bad stuff was said about them as they progressed through the music industry, i still find them as one of my biggest influences and im sure everyone on this board can say the same thing

I can remember the first time i saw blink with unwritten law and penny wise and i can remember the last time with taking back sunday , blink 182 has helped bands like new found glory and taking back sunday household names and they' ve brought out great bands like jimmy eat world and midtown , but i'm glad theyre taking time to catch up with loved ones because lets face it the last couple of months have been fucked up with tsunamis and mud slides in californa i dont blame them for wanting to spend time with family , mark , tom and travis were all talented musicans and blink was amazing

When Blink 182 announced that they were releasing a CD months before it actually came out, it consumed my thoughts until it came out. They were the only band to do that. Every release, especially the latest one, just gave me such a great feeling, from the day they announced it, till it was in my hands and I was listening to it. Yeah, I'm just another one who is defined as a person by Blink 182. Tom is my hero, too, and Dude Ranch completely changed my way of thinking and my musical taste. Seems like there's a lot of people out there like me, and I'm glad of it. Blink 182 should be proud of what they have accomplished and I'm sure they are. They deserve a break, and they don't owe us any more songs. But I sure fuckin' hope they give us some more at some point in time.

tom, travis, and mark,
i really never thought the day would come. im confused as hell, scared, nervous, and depressed. you guys made me who i am today, i know that is a lot to say but you got me into music, my livestyle, and everything that i know and relate to today started after i got into your music. you guys changed my life, and for the better. i dont know how to express how i feel. i guess all i can go an do is throw on one of your records and think back to one of six time i saw u guys live, or the time i got to meet all three of you and acctually have a conversation with the three ppl i admire the most. its really just hard to believe it, i wanna cry. so for now i want to wish you three the best in life. i hope you decide to come back together after you had your time and give everyone one last chance to see you, if not so be it. well i love you guys, your music, and everything that you've created. so farewell...
So sorry it's over, So sorry it's over...
There so much more that I wanted and...
There so much more that I needed and...
Time keeps moving on and on and on...
Soon we'll all be gone...

i heard a lot of people say they think a new boxcar cd might come out in the future. i love boxcar and would love to see them put out a new cd but the reason the blink stopped making music was to spend time with their families. i dont really tom and travis making a new boxcar cd when they are trying to spend time with their families
okay do I have to post these definitions in every forum I'm in....
Indefinite:
Not definite, especially:
1. Unclear; vague.
2. Lacking precise limits: an indefinite leave of absence.
3. Uncertain; undecided: indefinite about their plans
Hiatus:
1. A gap or interruption in space, time, or continuity; a break: “We are likely to be disconcerted by... hiatuses of thought” (Edmund Wilson).
2. Linguistics. A slight pause that occurs when two immediately adjacent vowels in consecutive syllables are pronounced, as in reality and naive.
3. Anatomy. A separation, aperture, fissure, or short passage in an organ or body part.
(yes I included the last 2 definitions casue I 'm a smart ass)
I 'm sure if they were breaking up they wouldn't have worded it "indefinite hiatus"....
take a damn english lesson (or visit dictionary.com) before start crying...maybe they'll end up like some of those 80's bands did, in 10 years we can go see them play in small clubs again.
but seriously I didn't read all six pages...I'm not saying this cause I'm in disbelief, I'm simply stating you are misinterpreting the message.

Thank you Blink 182!
I edited your post to suit me, thanks.

I am in the same boat as Tate they are the wons I started into this music with. I started with Dude Ranch while at the time I was totally into rap for whatever reason. Now I own like maybe 3 rap CD's down from over 300 and now punk dominates my shelves. Thanks Blink for getting me into better music and giving me something good to listen to when I was down. They are really going to be missed. When of the greatest times I have ever had was at the Blink 182 tour with Bad Religion and Fenix TX. They sold out the Gorge which is hugh for a punk group and gave me a time that I will not ever forget. I saw them next summer with NewFound Glory and Jimmy Eat World but it just wasnt the same. They will be sadly missed but I will be first in line for the comeback tour.

:help:
Dude Ranch came out the summer before I was a Junior in High School. I think that album got me and my friend through the last two years of high school. Oddly enough the first time we ever heard "What's My Age Again" before Enema came out the day we graduated from High School. We knew that Blink was something special before this but that song somehow was the sign of more greatness yet to come. I can't even begin to remember how many parties we had that summer before going off to college that Enema of the State was blaring the whole time. We turned so many people on to Blink that used to always laugh at us when we showed up with bleached blonde hair or purple hair back in high school(to be fair we were pretty lame, but we didn't give two fucks).
I can't say that Blink turned me onto music like some people but they did play a huge part in where my musical tastes ended up where they are today. My first loves will always be Pearl Jam and 311 because those are the two that got me deep into music....then it was Blink 182 and the Deftones around the same time that showed me how much more was out there musically. Id have to say that even still today those 4 along with Silverchair are still key in my musical preferences.

I think this break up is a long time coming.
The last cd was so good, that taking an "indefinite hiatus" after such a great work seems meritted.
Although, I really wouldn't mind seeing a B-Sides or an acoustic album in a couple of year.
Also, being that they were our generation's big band, maybe we'll see a reunion tour some day.

just reiterating what other people have said, they paved the way for a lot of people, whether you were a participant, or just a listener of music. they, and a lot of the bands that they got me onto, soundtracked my upbringing and i can never forget that. i'm from northern ireland, but i picked up a copy of duderanch when i went to visit relatives in california. sitting on a couch with the california sun setting over woodland hills i fell in love with the band, and i knew that this type of music was something i had to investigate. thank God i did, i don't know where i'd be without the music i listen to and blink were and are such a big part of that. i hope that they enjoy their lives, and whatever they wish they deserve it, but i do hope this isn't the end. any of you longtimers remember when this site was just a blink/mxpx fan site? everyone who regularly visits absolutepunk and enjoys it owes something to Blink. long live blink 182!

Seems like only yesterday I was sitting in my room as a little kid listening to budda and thinking these guys fuckin rock. I think I speak for every long term blink fan by saying this is a dark day. They are just pulling our legs and they will release a suprise cd in june. (Damnit if only it were true) They will be loved and missed by me either way. like about 100 people already said on here they got me into this music and so much more. Best of luck to them.

I think as some others said...we may be taking this indefinite hiatus a little to harsh. Is that what Thursday is calling their little break? Glassjaw? Members of SoCo are branching off for seperate projects. Perhaps this is just a little between records thing (without a set 'come back to the studio and start writing' ) like the gap filled by projects of Boxcar and the Transplants??? This stuff does happen and still see the return of the group in a not too terribly distant future. I almost lost it when I heard Silverchair say that they were taking a break from music for an entire two years after "Neon Ballroom"....hell their drummer got a job working at a record store! And after that time was up they got back together and put together one of if not my favorite albums of all time in "Diorama"....and now again after that, they are on a indefinite hiatus.
I certainly hope that they are still leaving open the possibility of future recordings and just haven't decided what kind of timeframe that is.
Just look at the overwhelming response they have been gettting most places. Im sure it does nothing but re-enforce to them how much they are appreciated by their fans. People are gonna keep telling them how much they loved them and hope they return of the next couple months and following year and I think after a while they may feel inspired to get it back together.

In all honesty, I'd rather see this band go out with an album like their last than something half hearted. If you're going to go out, then go out on top.I'm just wondering what will happen to the material they recorded while touring. Just like everyone else, Dude Ranch had a profound effect on me, and their latest is effort is nothing short of phenominal and is linked to alot of good memories. Hell, even the bsides to their newest cd completely rock. I'm pretty sure "Not Now" is my favorite song by them. I'll miss these guys because if it was for them I wouldn't be where I am. It's amazing how a single band can make change so many lives. I would never have picked up a microphone if it wasn't for them. But I have a good feeling this isn't the last we'll hear from them.

This is rough. I just read all 10 pages to wait for an ass hole to say how it's a good thing that they're gone. I'm sure they'll pull a Green Day and come back, but it's still weird. Growing up all through high school and middle school listening to them and seeing them grow older and mature, and then the next thing I know, they're done. It's hard for me to express in words how much I've idolized them. I don't listen to Simple Plan or New Found Glory, but Blink is different. It didn't matter with them. I listen to Tool and A Perfect Circle and somehow Blink. They give you this inspiration that no other band can give you.
The sad thing is that I have been to every blink concert in Michigan since 1998. Not counting the weekend that they played two shows; I only went to one of them.
You see them and you feel like they're real people. They're nothing spectacular. They weren't the best band live, but there was just something about them. Look at what they did to the world. It's weird. I feel bad for the people that dislike them because they've never experienced the effect that they can have on your life. I owe them.

C'mon, now! "indefinite hiatus" doesn't necessarily mean the end! Think about it... all three of them have new little kids and probably want to see them grow up. And since their fans have taken such good care of them over the years they actually have the means to take some time off and spend it with their families! I wish them the best and hope they eventually make another cd and do another tour... oh, God! Do I hope that since I didn't let my kid go see them the last time they were in the area and now he is SO pissed at me! :ugly_tock :unfair
Seriously....am I the only one who fucking loves the song "Here's Your Letter" so damn much? Fuck I love that song.

I keep hearing that they have broken up. I think some people are confusing taking a break with breaking up for good. Travis said they just need a break form each other but they plan on recording another record after the hiatus. dtr.com has even posted an article about blink's break up. This hiatus might lead to a breakup, however, as of right now, they are still a together as a band.
