Listed here is what I can tell is the most respected work by each director and then my favorite of theirs, respectively. Which is your favorite? (Basically, the one I think gets the most respect is first, then my favorite is second).

8½ is the best on there but the best film directed by one of those directors is Le Samourai by Melville.

Tough poll. Being a huge Fellini fan, I've never been able to decide between 8 1/2 and La Dolce Vita. But the last half an hour of LDV may be the most brilliant conclusion I've even seen, so I went with that.

I absolutely love it and getting the chance to see it in a theatre was just so much fun that the experience alone probably catapulted it ahead of my other favorites in this list (The 400 Blows, Rashomon).
