So I went to The Donnas show last night, and to be fair, they put on a good show. But it wasn't enough to make it a good concert. First off, I need to lend my support to the people who say kids nowdays ruin shows. I have NEVER seen such a bunch of batshits trying to mosh or whatever the hell they were doing. I like a good mosh, but not when you continue to fuck it all up in every possible way.

And when I go to a show, I really want to hear more than just THE FUCKING BASS! Jesus, get a fucking sound technican or something, the sound setup was the worst I have ever heard.

I also hate kids with long hair. I really do. Especially when you headbang at a rock show. That's metal territory. Leave it there. I'll try again- you headbang to Metallica, NOT the Donnas. I don't want your greasy fucking hair in my mouth. Next time Im bringing a scissor.

Last but not least, when a venue is non smoking, DON'T smoke. This fucking loser manages to sneak behind me and crouches to light up a smoke. Safe to say he just about set me on fire.

I think we're now really getting into what defines art here. In my estimation there are two key points to art: the message it is conveying and the technical proficiency with which it is produced (basically the form itself).

To me, the most important part of that equation is the former, but BOTH are important. I want art, music in particular to mean something to me first and formost. The more technical proficiency (or the "prettier it sounds" or the more "groundbreaking" it is) the better, but I can't love a piece of art without it carrying meaning. I can most assuredly like it however. I like a lot of Jazz although it really doesn't mean anything to me personally, but until it does I will never love it.

The point is, for every person there are different sets of meanings and messages that hold significance for them. And these are often changing and transforming. I think the main difference between the two sides in this argument is that one group primarily values the meaning of art, whereas the other primarily values its execution (which includes things like, its uniqueness).

So for folks like Kevin, just realize that you're looking for different things out of music than the "elitists" (I don't really like calling people like Tony and Anthony and Dom that). I'm not saying that these guys don't take meaning from music, it's just that it seems that they're more concerned with how the artist advances the form than with how successful they are at presenting a message to an individual. Which is fine and valid. Keep talking about music, don't just blindly accept anything just because it might have meaning to a couple of people even if everyone else thinks it sucks, criticism is what keeps artists on their toes. Its okay to say "I don't like something" however I think it is a different matter altogether to try and quantify what is inherently a subjective form and say without a hint of irony that "this IS bad and if you like it you must have bad taste."

The problem with many of those who have bad taste is they refuse to give any other forms of music a chance. They are content with listening to pop punk. I'd be perfectly happy introducing those people to new music, but those who are content with thinking Atreyu, Simple Plan, Taking Back Sunday are the best bands in the world, and refuse to listen to other bands, have bad taste. If for no other reason than by virtue of ignorance.

PS. I do like Jimmy Eat World. Though they have gone downhill since "Clarity".
