A Sublime tribute album is due out this October. The album, titled Forever Free, is a co-op release between the Baseline Music Co. and Cornerstone RAS. Some of the bands featured include Guttermouth, No Use for a Name, Voodoo Glow Skulls, Denver Harbor, Ozomatli, Mad Caddies, Never Heard of It, 1208, and more.

What a disappointing group of bands..

Save the Mad Caddies. They'll do a damn good job.

goddamnit, Sublime would not want a group of shitty bands making a tribute album about them, you have to draw the line somewhere and I do at Sublime.

Wow, I'm surprised Brandon didn't beat Frank in posting this tidbit...

Denver Harbor can handle the reggaeish rock well. This should be good.

People are worried about mash-up albums being the new trend, but I don't think they had their minds set on tribute albums being the new hot topic.

honestly arent we going a little overboard with all the tribute albums right about now?
maybe i'll forgive them for something like a refused tribute album
but seriously, come on! enough with them already

sublime made some good songs but i hate them because they took WAY to much heroin which prevented them from being great. they shouldn't have a tribute album

The problem with tribute albums is that they come out long after the band has broken up and no longer functions (this case being no exception). The band members can't even be consulted on such a project being completed. They have no input on anything.

This allows crappy no-name labels to get a group of crappy no-name bands to record a bunch of songs in a crappy no-name studio on a crappy no-money budget. Once the album is released, all the label has to do is pay royalties to the songwriters. Keep the checks coming and nobody gets hurt. If you need examples of bad tribute albums, look at any of the tribute albums released on Cleopatra. Same bands, same result.

Lounge-cover God Richard Cheese addresses this in the FAQ section of his site. It reads:

"5.3.2) Do you have to get their permission to include their songs on your CDs?

Nope. Doing a remake of a song is legally allowed, as long as you give proper credit to the songwriter and publisher, and as long as you pay the statutory royalty rate of 8cents per song per CD sold. For a CD such as I'D LIKE A VIRGIN, Dick sends about $1.76 total per CD out to the various publishers. More info about this procss can be obtained at www.songfile.com."

The Sublime tribute actually might turn out to be a decent tribute album since most of the bands mentioned were chums with the band in their day. However, in an era of crappy no-name tribute albums, I wouldn't be surprised to see this project ultimately fail.

Hell, even that Ramones tribute album flopped and it had mega rock stars on it and major-label money behind it!

First off, Sublime is one of my favorite band, no matter how much drugs they did and they were one of a kind..even more a reason that they kick ass.
Second, a tribute album would be sweet. They're fun songs and would be awesome to hear covers of.
And why not add Reel Big Fish? They did a cover of Boss DJ on their album cheer up

next thing we need is a blink 182 tribute album. and yes i know they didnt break up, but neither did counting crows, or third eye blind...

I would think they would have solely bands of the reggae/ska genre rather than bands like No Use for A Name. But it's still cool either way but if this turns out to be a shitty CD, it'll be pretty disrespectful to Sublime.

OAR is an awesome band live. They're a really good jam band and I think they're pretty talented. I'd much rather go see them and chill with a bunch of mature people than sit through TSL and have to worry about girls getting their first periods on me in the crowd. To each their own though.

The Starting Line? Why did you bring them up? OAR is not a good jam band, go see Rat Dog if you want to see a good jam band, they are on tour right now with Assembly of Dust. OAR is just a sub par easily marketable want to be jam band.

just because 311 wants to be Sublime doesn't mean a cover by them would be that great

Hey hey, that is true. There us a smashing pumpkins tribute coming out shortly. we were very honored to be asked to do this. here are some of the bands on it:

This is qouted from the label -

"Things are coming along well...bands are starting to hit the studio & the release is shaping up to be awesome...I just about have the complete line-up/song list set, but I have a couple bands still to completely confirm, but as far as those that are confirmed: Finch, Darkest Hour, Between the Buried & Me, theSTART, Bleeding Through, As Tall As Lions, The Silence, Armor For Sleep, A Thorn For Every Heart, Nodes of Ranvier, The Stiletto Formal, A Dozen Furies, 18 Visions, Bleed te Dream, & of course, NationalProduct"

I was also told our homies saosin may be doing this too and some other larger acts. We got asked to do "Disarm" which im enthused about. Ill keep you posted on more details

you guys wont have to worry about a thing from us for sure, we arent trying to change the sound or song, in fact we are even bringing in the USC symphony to add to the live full sound of violin, cello etc, there wont be any chugs or breakdowns from us haha
