View Full Version : The Weekly TJV Robbery: Episode 3

As most of you could've guessed...The Junior Varsity (www.juniorvarsity.com) were robbed again last night. There's an attached picture in the replies and below is what band member Nick Dodson had to say:
"Nick from TJV here.
We are currently in the city that has the US's highest crime rate, that's right our nation's capitol. We are still at the studio recording and leave tuesday for the UK with Straylight. Chris just finished up all of his drum tracks last night and now Asa has begun on the bass. This morning when Asa went out for his morning cigarette before he started recording he noticed the trailer had been moved. On closer inspection someone had tried to hot-wire the van but thankfully
failed and only succeeded in rolling the van forward a few feet. This being more than enough to get the trailer doors open. The only thing in the trailer were my bass cabinet, sergio and andys pedal board boxes and our merch. The thieves must have found something that fit them just right becuase they took nearly all of our shirts and 100 CDs. What they will do with 100+ CDs is unbeknownst to me. Coasters/Frisbees/Decorations/Box of 100 CDs on ebay...who knows.
All I know is that I and the entire band are completly embarassed. We promise you that there was no deterence from this situation.
It sucks plain and simple. I am not typing this to have you donate any money or buy any shirts I just want people to understand we are not "staging" robberies or just plain ignorant. The van is parked right in front of our recording studio and most would consider that fairly safe especially when backed against a wall.
Attached is a picture of what they did to our trailer as proof.
If any of you have any questions feel free to email me at
nick@thejuniorvarsity.com."--Sincerely, -Nick Dodson
------------------------------------
Note: To anyone who responds with things such as, "It's their own faults, someone should've been sleeping in the van", is a moron. The temperature in the New England area has been absolutely brutal...it would be suicide to sleep in a van and you'd freeze to death in a matter of hours. There wouldn't be heat, because the engine would be off, and the engine would be off because nobody has enough money to keep their car running non-stop. Parking it up against a wall and locking it with heavy duty locks is about the most cautious you could be...this was totally out of their hands.

You know what, why even stop just keep driving, there's no way anyone can get in the van if it's moving. You live in the Northeast you know how could it gets here, sleeping in the van would be hazardous to your health. I have a car that's kept in garage and I always go start it up a few minutes before I leave, I couldn't imagine spending an entire night.

it's a conspiracy
We are currently in the city that has the US's highest crime rate, that's right our nation's capitol.
Not even close... 170k reported property crimes in 2004 - 3k/100k Population
LA = 380k reported cases (3k/100k), NY = 400k reported cases (2k/100k)
Myrtle Beach has the higest crime rate @ 7k/100k inhabitants.
I feel sorry for them, but i think it's time to stop @ a radio shack and pick up a $40 door alarm...

We had our van robbed when we were on warped for a couple weeks. Not even a band van -- a minivan. Just my friend & I. We lost a good 700+ cds (they were in the big books) and were well-hidden. People just suck. They also stole toothpicks, all of our roadmaps except the map of Vermont, a broken watch & a cup of water.
There really is no way to carry every single possession with you whenever you leave your vehicle. It's impossible & people will take anything. No matter how well-hidden it is.

It's all a big ploy to generate some publicity. They have a friend of theirs take their stuff so they can claim it was stolen and get websites like this to generate sympathy for them, and get people to listen to their music and then because everyone feels guilty they go out and buy their new record which debuts at number 2 on billboard only trailing NOW 25.

Yeah, stories like this are the reason why I keep all my original CDs at home and just keep mp3 disc CDs in my car. If they wanna steal those, fine by me; I still have the originals at home... unless they rob my house too....

a) people who are saying somethings fishy arent saying that the band is doing it but it is fishy who the hell gets robbed 3 times in one month.
b) i dont think people are just robbing them cause they've been robbed before unless, as I stated before, they have a big sign on their van that says we are the junior varsity, most bands travel with a white van and there are a lot of white vans.
c) i seriously feel for these guys and think it totally sucks this happens, but they cant just keep overlooking it.

While I agree that some stuff like this shouldn't be posted multiple times, it's a warning to other bands that it can happen and that it can happen multiple times to a band so they can take every precaution that they can to avoid the same fate.
Yes, it is the third time in almost a month, the guys know that they need to do something about it, but they've been busy as fuck moving out of their house in IL to the studio to record, plus trying to make up for the losses from the other break-ins, and get ready to leave for the UK and make sure everything's taken care of for their trip.
As for them posting this so they can get donations, TJV is one of the hardest working bands out there and they work their asses off. They won't take donations and won't even think about asking for them unless its donations to help out another band like they did with ActionAction. That's just how they are.

andy of tjv here:
Seriously, we almost had this posted just because of how funny it was.
We are fortunate that we have not had much equipment taken. Thats the only thing thats worth anything to any of us. So we're thankful.
We're thankful our van is hard to start in the winter and basically only we can do it. This kept the robbers from driving off!!!
We don't want anyones sympathy. This is more entertainment than anything. But trust me, we aren't doing anything out of the ordinary. We even took extra precautions this time. We backed the trailer into a wall so it was impossible to open. We didn't think someone would break into our van again and get it in neutral somehow and push it forward....then push the trailer forward...then snip the lock...and then steal some useless stuff. We plan on buying a new van within a month so we don't want to invest much more into this van...it has let us down sooo much. Our next van will have a security system on it and we will have one installed on the trailer. The robbers took 2 empty boxes for pedalboards and one with old merch in it. I really find it funny to think what the hell they're going to do with the ugly old boxes. This definitely isn't a publicity stunt. I promise, getting one post a week on ap.net is not exactly worth the effort of faking a robbery every week. Frankly, we could care less. We're in the studio now and only want to worry about the music...thats all this band has ever worried about.
This is purely coincidence...i don't think anyones following us. Nobody's getting away with much equipment and i doubt robbers give a shit about ap.net. Also, the robberies have taken place hundreds and hundreds of miles apart.
Action Action still had it much worse a few weeks ago.
Im lucky i was able to get my passport back in time so we can go to england. yay for that.

i dunno, i got robbed 3 times in less than a month, i understand. the first time they picked our lock while we were out gettin dinner. the second time they picked my roomies window lock (which is on the second floor) and took a bunch of stuff outta his room while i was in my room right across the hallway (most likely on this particular website). the third time we had about 10 people over and were playing drinking games in our living room and the dude broke in to the bedroom right next to where we were playing. we heard him and chased him down the street but i am a fat white kid and he was an athletic fit black dude so he outran me. i understand how TJV can take every precaution but still suffer- ive been there......

any body that steals stuff for a living is going to get past a basic security system that's installed by a professional, if you really want to deter criminals, you have to rig stuff inside the van, like duct taping razors to inside of the door so when they open it with their hand they get cut, do something that they're not going to think about when they're trying to get into the van

but on top of that, for a full time touring band not to do it, i think its just rediculous. Do it BEFORE your stuff gets stolen.

These guys must be really slow learners. How about getting some insurance and stop leaving stuff in your van? Novel.

I'm just glad these robbers aren't targetting good bands. That would suck.

To each his or her own opinion, but that's just a little immature, don't you think?

i like the car battery idea (although it wouldnt work) They need to devise a nice boobytrap...or an alarm of some sort...

Yes Phx is number 2. Tucson is 1st. 3 times during the summer I came out of a building with someone INSIDE my car trying to hotwire it. Tucson has the worst car theft rate. Its sucks
So I'm going to have to say to TJV, "Don't Even Come To Arizona." SuperWoman and I both know about being in Arizona and the theft rate is horrible. I remember reading the statistic is about 1000 cars a day have something happen to them, whether theft of the car or trying to hotwire or even stealing something in the car itself here in Arizona itself. Poor guys. Please come here, but bring the mafia or something.

 again? what the hell is goin on? what is this world coming to? man, the kid who lives across the street from me just got his precious truck stolen. damn. there are so many god damn scumbags out there that it is disgusting. but maybe they should get a car alarm or something
also, the title is misleading. "Robbery" is when a person steals stuff from you, in front of you. Most robberies are armed robberies because the robbers need a way to keep the robbed at bay. TJV were buglarized which happens when someone steals something without being detected during the theft.

Tonight we got back into LA from some amazing shows in Northern California and we were playing Hollywood at the Knitting Factory. My band is huge on donating to charity and we make it a point at every show we can to talk about the aids foundation, the cancer society and the homeless fund. Well tonight, someone walked right up while our merch guy was opening boxes and stole our charity jar with a few hundred dollars in it. Needless to say ive been fuckin disgusted the whole night and hated even stepping on the stage thinking someone would go that fuckin low. im officially sick to my stomach.
